[Brain abscesses after extracranial infections of the head and neck area].

The authors report on 20 immunocompetent patients with brain abscess after 12 cases of middle ear, seven tooth and a single frontal sinus infection. The clinical aspects, hematochemical and microbiological data, the role of imaging diagnostics (CT, MR) and the type of treatment are analysed. Neurosurgery was performed on 17 patients (85%), eight of whom subsequently underwent evacuation of the primary source of infection (four mastoidectomies, two timpanoplasties, two tooth extractions). Mastoidectomy was eventually carried out on one of the three patients who did not undergo neurosurgery. Mic

Self-Curing Glass Ionomer Cement Covered by Photopolymerizable Adhesive for Protection of Mucoperiosteal or Gingival Flap Sutures in Canine Oral Surgery.

Periodontal disease is one of the main affections of the oral cavity of dogs. Its main complication is the formation of periapical abscess, which, when affecting the maxillary canine teeth, can lead to the formation of oronasal fistulae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of self-curing glass ionomer cement, covered by photopolymerizable adhesive, as a protective element for mucoperiosteal or gingival flap sutures in oral surgery of dogs. We studied 15 dogs from the clinical routine of the dental service of a teaching veterinary hospital, which needed oral surgeries to

Severe odontogenic infections: a 5-year review of a major referral hospital in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic infections are fairly common in healthcare settings. However, late presentations such as Ludwig's angina, facial cellulitis, necrotizing cervical fasciitis (NCF), among others could lead to mortality. In view of suggestions that the occurrence of severe, near-fatal odontogenic infections is declining, this study set out to determine the incidence of such severe odontogenic infections over the past 5 years at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, a major referral centre in Ghana. METHODS: A retrospective review was done, involving all patients with severe odontogenic infect

Root sepsis associated with insect-dwelling Sebaldella termitidis in a lesser dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus medius).

Sebaldella termitidis is a rare fastidious microorganism of the Leptotrichiaceae family. A variety of closely related species are associated with severe and even life-threatening disease in humans and animals, such as Streptobacillus moniliformis, the etiological organism of rat-bite fever as well as members of Leptotrichia spp. and Sneathia sanguinegens, which have been reported from cases of septicaemia. In contrast, since its description some 50 years ago, S. ermitidis has so far never been reported as a vertebrate pathogen, nor has it been found aside from its natural termite host. A lesse

Dental surgery and anesthetic precautions of a patient with Down syndrome and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: a case report.

Down syndrome and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis have been associated with ligament laxity, specifically the atlantoaxial ligament, which maintains the proper positioning of the cervical first and second vertebrae. The joint consists of different pathological processes, and it is paramount that individuals with either condition be screened appropriately before surgery is contemplated. The purpose of this paper was to present a case of an individual with both conditions and describe precautionary measures that were undertaken to safely complete dental treatment under general anesthesia and avoid

Panoramic radiographic examination: a survey of 271 edentulous patients.

The aim of this study was to quantify the frequency of positive radiographic findings in edentulous arches. Panoramic radiographs from 271 patients who were edentulous in one or both arches were evaluated for the presence of retained root fragments, impacted teeth, foreign bodies, radiolucencies, radiopacities, mental foramina at or near the crest of the residual alveolar ridge, and maxillary sinus proximity to the crest of the residual alveolar ridge. One or more of these radiographic observations were found in 51.7% of the examined films. The most frequent finding (30.6%) was close approxima

Pulp response to ferric sulfate, diluted formocresol and IRM in pulpotomized primary baboon teeth.

This study investigated the pulp response to a 15.5 percent ferric sulfate solution (FS) and a 20 percent dilution of formocresol (DFC) in pulpotomized primary teeth of baboons, after four and eight weeks. Pulpotomies were performed in seventy-nine primary teeth of 4 baboons. After coronal pulp resection, the pulp stumps were painted with ferric sulfate for fifteen seconds, in thirty-two teeth (group 1); in another thirty-two teeth, a cotton pellet moistened with dilution of formocresol was placed over the pulp stumps for five minutes, and removed (group 2). In fifteen teeth, IRM was placed di

Odontogenic signs and symptoms as predictors of odontogenic infection: a clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a study to determine if odontogenic signs and symptoms in the emergency department predicted the development of overt odontogenic infection at a follow-up dental visit. METHODS: One hundred ninety-five patients with odontalgia, but without overt signs of infection, were enrolled in a prospective, double-blind, randomized clinical trial. Data included dental diagnosis, pain characteristics, presence of caries and restorations, presence and size of periapical radiolucencies and other diagnostic test results. RESULTS: Thirteen of 134 subjects for whom data were

Complications associated with maxillary osteotomies.

There are certain complications involved in maxillary ostetomies; devitalization of teeth, loss of part or all of the osteotomized segment, and relapse are possible problems. The paramount cause of the complications in seven different cases seemed to be the interruption of the blood supply to the operative site. A seven-point guideline is formulated; it integrates preoperative planning, surgical procqedures, and postoperative care.
