Intracoronal radiolucency in an incompletely erupted permanent molar with a diagnosis of pericoronitis: importance of radiographic examination.

Because of clinical signs and symptoms, a diagnosis of pericoronitis in a partially erupted, partially impacted first molar was made. A more thorough diagnosis was made with the help of a periapical radiograph that showed caries and thus revealed an irreversible pulpitis. Appropriate treatment was the result.

Wound healing following curettement of bifurcation abscesses of human primary molars.

Forty-five abscessed human mandibular primary molars with bifurcation radiolucency were subjected to a two-stage formocresol treatment of the pulp chamber. On the first appointment, an elliptical patch of buccal mucosa was removed. Bony defects varied from 2 mm. to more than 4 mm. in diameter. Periapical radiographs were used to record changes in bone development. Punch biopsy specimens were taken from the bifurcation area of some subjects from 2 weeks up to a year after surgical curettement. Biopsied tissue was studied by electron and light microscopy to examine wound healing of the bifurcati

Effect of Saliva on Compressive Strength of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Biod+, and Biodentine: An In Vitro Study.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of saliva on the compressive strength of three commonly used dental materials-mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biod+, and Biodentine-used for root canal fillings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six extracted primary molars were divided into two groups: a control group (group A) with no saliva exposure and an experimental group (group B) subjected to saliva exposure. Each group was further divided into three subgroups (n = 6), with specimens filled with MTA, Biod+, or Biodentine. After a standardized pulpotomy procedure, the materials were plac

Determinants of pediatric dental anxiety after comprehensive dental treatments under general anesthesia.

Providing dental treatment to young patients can pose challenges in certain circumstances, particularly when they experience anxiety about dental procedures. For this reason, general anesthesia (GA) is preferred as an alternative treatment for performing dental treatments on children. On the other hand, the use of general anesthesia could potentially increase the risk of developing dental anxiety complications. This study was aimed to explore determinants of pediatric dental anxiety after comprehensive dental treatments under general anesthesia (CDT-GA). In this prospective study, 80 healthy c

A scoping review of guidelines on caries management for children and young people to inform UK undergraduate core curriculum development.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence in cariology teaching is not consistently reflected in paediatric dentistry in the United Kingdom (UK). Many dental schools are not consistently teaching biological approaches to caries management, with outdated or complex methods being taught outwith the purview of general dental practitioners. This scoping review aimed to map current guidelines on the management of caries in children and young people. This is part of a work package to inform the consensus and development of a UK-wide caries management curriculum for paediatric dentistry. METHODS: A search of ele

Changes in the radicular pulp-dentine complex in healthy intact teeth and in response to deep caries or restorations: A histological and histobacteriological study.

INTRODUCTION: The present study reported the histological events that occurred in the radicular pulp of human mature teeth in the presence of medium/deep untreated caries lesions, and those teeth with restorations or direct pulp capping, with particular emphasis on the morphology of the canal wall dentine and the odontoblast layer. METHODS: Sixty-two teeth with medium/deep caries lesions, extensive restorations or after application of a direct pulp capping procedure were obtained from 57 subjects. Fourteen intact mature teeth served as controls. Stained serial sections were examined for the p

Caries control and other variables associated with success of primary molar vital pulp therapy.

PURPOSE: This research evaluated initial treatment of deep dental caries with caries control (CC) procedure and the effect of other factors on the success of indirect pulp therapy (IPT) and formocresol pulpotomy (FP). METHODS: Retrospective chart audits were performed on 226 primary molars with deep caries approaching the pulp that were treated using IPT and FP. Mean follow-up was 3.4 years. CC with glass ionomer cement (GIC) was performed on 50 of the 226 teeth 1 to 3 months before pulp therapy. RESULTS: IPT therapy was successful 94% of the time, whereas FP was successful 70% of the time.

Response of the primary pulp to inflammation: a review of the Leeds studies and challenges for the future.

AIM: The purpose of this paper is to consider evidence for the early involvement of the pulp in primary molars following a proximal caries attack and to consider the evolution of ferric sulphate as the possible alternative to formocresol for pulp therapy in primary molars. Concerns have been expressed over the wisdom of using products containing formaldehyde in children and alternatives should be considered, even though there is no substantive data to support the claims of formocresol toxicity. Pulp therapy is still often required in the management of large proximal caries in primary molars. G

Garlic as a novel therapeutic agent for the management of pulp infections: a systematic review.

In vitro studies have shown that garlic extracts are effective against microorganisms commonly associated with root canal infections, with the ability to penetrate bacterial biofilms and inhibit the growth of resistant strains. Building upon this preclinical evidence, the objective of the present systematic review was to identify, critically analyze, and synthesize the available clinical trials on the efficacy of garlic as a therapeutic agent in the management of pulp infections. The review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO, including clinical trials evaluati

Notoginsenoside R1 functionalized gelatin hydrogels to promote reparative dentinogenesis.

Pulp-capping materials are commonly adopted in the clinic to form reparative dentin and thus protect dental pulp tissues from cases of deep caries, accidentally exposed pulps or partial pulpotomy. Some traditional pulp capping materials used in the clinic include calcium hydroxide and mineral trioxide aggregates. However, there are limitations to thin restorative dentin, and a long period of time is needed to cause degenerative changes in dental pulp. In this paper, injectable colloidal gels were developed to induce the formation of reparative dentin through a simple UV method from methacrylic

Advanced all-optical logic gates on a spectral bus.

BACKGROUND: Root resorption may be physiological or pathological. Physiological resorption occurs in deciduous teeth to allow replacement by permanent successors. In permanent dentition, resorption is pathological and classified as external (ERR) or internal (IRR), depending on its origin. IRR begins within the root canal and may lead to progressive dentin destruction. Although often asymptomatic, advanced cases may present as a pink discoloration of the crown, known as Pink Tooth of Mummery (PTM). To review current scientific evidence regarding the etiology, pathogenesis, classification, diag

Pulp response to ferric sulfate, diluted formocresol and IRM in pulpotomized primary baboon teeth.

This study investigated the pulp response to a 15.5 percent ferric sulfate solution (FS) and a 20 percent dilution of formocresol (DFC) in pulpotomized primary teeth of baboons, after four and eight weeks. Pulpotomies were performed in seventy-nine primary teeth of 4 baboons. After coronal pulp resection, the pulp stumps were painted with ferric sulfate for fifteen seconds, in thirty-two teeth (group 1); in another thirty-two teeth, a cotton pellet moistened with dilution of formocresol was placed over the pulp stumps for five minutes, and removed (group 2). In fifteen teeth, IRM was placed di

Coronectomy: a technique to protect the inferior alveolar nerve.

PURPOSE: Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve when extracting lower third molars is often caused by the intimate relationship between the nerve and the roots of the teeth. The technique of coronectomy, or intentional root retention, may minimize this problem. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients underwent coronectomy on 50 lower third molars with follow-up of at least 6 months. The technique of coronectomy deliberately protected the lingual nerve as part of the surgical procedure. All roots were left at least 3 mm below the buccal and lingual plates of bone. All patients were radiographe

Coronectomy (intentional partial odontectomy of lower third molars).

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the rate of infection of retained lower third molar roots after coronectomy in teeth judged to be in intimate relation to the inferior alveolar nerve. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of 52 patients who were operated on over a 10-year period. RESULTS: Only 3 of 52 patients had to have roots removed because of pain or infection. Postoperative findings and aspects of the surgical technique are also discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Coronectomy is a worthwhile option to extraction where a lower third molar is judged to be in close proximity to the inferior alv
