Antimicrobial Resistance in Streptococcus spp.

The genus Streptococcus includes Gram-positive organisms shaped in cocci and organized in chains. They are commensals, pathogens, and opportunistic pathogens for humans and animals. Most Streptococcus species of veterinary relevance have a specific ecological niche, such as S. uberis, which is almost exclusively an environmental pathogen causing bovine mastitis. In contrast, S. suis can be considered as a true zoonotic pathogen, causing specific diseases in humans after contact with infected animals or derived food products. Finally, Streptococcus species such as S. agalactiae can be sporadica

Partial recN gene sequencing: a new tool for identification and phylogeny within the genus Streptococcus.

Partial sequences of the recN gene (1249 bp), which encodes a recombination and repair protein, were analysed to determine the phylogenetic relationship and identification of streptococci. The partial sequences presented interspecies nucleotide similarity of 56.4-98.2 % and intersubspecies similarity of 89.8-98 %. The mean DNA sequence similarity of recN gene sequences (66.6 %) was found to be lower than those of the 16S rRNA gene (94.1 %), rpoB (84.6 %), sodA (74.8 %), groEL (78.1 %) and gyrB (73.2 %). Phylogenetically derived trees revealed six statistically supported groups: Streptococcus s

Pathological, microbiological, and molecular characterization of uterine samples in culled sows from farms with a history of reproductive failure in Brazil.

Reproductive failure in swine herds is an important cause of production losses and increased sow culling. While many diagnostic efforts focus on abortion-derived samples, the evaluation of reproductive tracts from culled sows may provide additional insights. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological, microbiological, and molecular alterations focused on uterine samples of sows from three Brazilian farms with a history of reproductive failures. A total of 207 reproductive tracts from culled sows were collected at slaughter and examined for gross, histological lesions, and bacteriol

Pathogenic investigations of Streptococcus pasteurianus, an underreported zoonotic pathogen, isolated from a diseased piglet with meningitis.

Streptococcus pasteurianus, an underreported opportunistic pathogen, is considered an increasingly recognized cause of meningitis and bacteremia in many animals and humans worldwide. However, except for some epidemiological studies, there is no report about the gene-deletion mutagenesis, virulence factors, reservoir niches or animal infection models for this pathogen. In this study, we first isolated an S. pasteurianus strain from a newly weaned piglet's brain with meningitis. The genomic sequence of this swine isolate WUSP067 shared high homology with that of two human strains. The comparativ

Overview of porcine interstitial and bronchointerstitial pneumonia: infectious and non-infectious causes.

Interstitial pneumonia in swine is an important respiratory condition in which inflammation and thickening of the pulmonary interstitium result in impaired gas exchange and respiratory distress. The multifactorial etiology of the disease includes viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens, as well as environmental or toxic insults. Clinical signs range from acute respiratory distress and fever to chronic weight loss and reduced growth performance, contributing to economic losses due to decreased productivity and increased mortality. Pathogenesis typically begins with a primary insult, commonly

No evidence of hepatitis E virus-associated central nervous system infections in a Vietnamese multicenter cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis E virus (HEV), traditionally associated with acute hepatitis, has been increasingly recognized as a potential cause of neurological disease, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia. However, its role in central nervous system (CNS) infections in Vietnam has not been investigated. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 330 patients hospitalized with suspected CNS infections at four tertiary hospitals in Northern Vietnam. Extensive diagnostics, including CSF culture, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), customized PCR assays, and

Engineered Low-Endotoxin Bacterial Biomimetic Vesicles for Enhanced Oral Dual-Antigen Subunit Vaccine Delivery.

Subunit vaccines are promising for disease prevention because of their safety and cost-effectiveness. However, their efficacy is limited by low immunogenicity and gastrointestinal degradation after oral administration. To address this issue, low-endotoxin Salmonella choleraesuis strain SC-L3 was engineered via lipid A modification to generate bacterial biomimetic vesicles (BBVs) with reduced endotoxin activity. BBVs were functionalized using ClyA-embedded SpyCatcher and Streptococcus protein G for dual antigen coupling, and further coated with chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) to enhance mucosal

Genomic comparison between pathogenic Streptococcus agalactiae isolated from Nile tilapia in Thailand and fish-derived ST7 strains.

Streptococcus agalactiae, or Group B streptococcus (GBS), is a highly virulent pathogen in aquatic animals, causing huge mortalities worldwide. In Thailand, the serotype Ia, β-hemolytic GBS, belonging to sequence type (ST) 7 of clonal complex (CC) 7, was found to be the major cause of streptococcosis outbreaks in fish farms. In this study, we performed an in silico genomic comparison, aiming to investigate the phylogenetic relationship between the pathogenic fish strains of Thai ST7 and other ST7 from different hosts and geographical origins. In general, the genomes of Thai ST7 strains are clo

Diagnostic and pathological characterization of senecavirus A-associated epidemic transient neonatal losses in swine.

Senecavirus A (SVA) has emerged as a significant viral pathogen of swine, traditionally associated with idiopathic vesicular disease but more recently linked to epidemic transient neonatal losses (ETNL), a syndrome characterized by increased mortality in piglets without consistent vesicular lesions. The mechanisms underlying SVA-associated neonatal mortality remain unclear due to the lack of specific clinical signs, frequent co-infections, and limited tissue characterization. This retrospective study analyzed 186 neonatal submissions (<24 days old) that were tested for SVA by RT-qPCR at the Io

[Development and characterization of monoclonal Antibody against M-like protein of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus from pig].

Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus belongs to lancefield group C streptococcus, which can cause disease both in animals and humans. It has been associated with a wide variety of serious infections, including meningitis, pneumonia, septic arthritis and mastitis. The M like proteins on the surface of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus have an antiphagocytic role analogous to that of group A streptococcal M proteins that are essential in establishing infection. In the present study, the M-like gene without partial signal peptide sequence was amplified from genomic DNA of S. equi subsp. zooepidemic

Streptococcal autolysin promotes dysfunction of swine tracheal epithelium by interacting with vimentin.

Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is a major zoonotic pathogen resulting in manifestations as pneumonia and septic shock. The upper respiratory tract is typically thought to be the main colonization and entry site of SS2 in pigs, but the mechanism through which it penetrates the respiratory barrier is still unclear. In this study, a mutant with low invasive potential to swine tracheal epithelial cells (STECs) was screened from the TnYLB-1 transposon insertion mutant library of SS2, and the interrupted gene was identified as autolysin (atl). Compared to wild-type (WT) SS2, Δatl mutant exhibit

Retrospective Analysis of the Detection of Pathogens Associated with the Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex in Routine Diagnostic Samples from Austrian Swine Stocks.

The diagnostic workup of respiratory disease in pigs is complex due to coinfections and non-infectious causes. The detection of pathogens associated with respiratory disease is a pivotal part of the diagnostic workup for respiratory disease. We aimed to report how frequently certain viruses and bacteria were detected in samples from pigs with respiratory symptoms in the course of routine diagnostic procedures. Altogether, 1975 routine diagnostic samples from pigs in Austrian swine stocks between 2016 and 2021 were analysed. PCR was performed to detect various pathogens, including porcine repro

The spatio-temporal distribution of acute encephalitis syndrome and its association with climate and landcover in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) differs in its spatio-temporal distribution in Vietnam with the highest incidence seen during the summer months in the northern provinces. AES has multiple aetiologies, and the cause remains unknown in many cases. While vector-borne disease such as Japanese encephalitis and dengue virus and non-vector-borne diseases such as influenza and enterovirus show evidence of seasonality, associations with climate variables and the spatio-temporal distribution in Vietnam differs between these. The aim of this study was therefore to understand the spatio-temp

Transition of pseudorabies virus from latency to reactivation state selectively triggered by pathogenic bacteria.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) causes severe morbidity and mortality in pigs and must be eradicated from pig populations. The increasing PRV infections in humans-resulting in severe encephalitis, neurological sequelae, and death since 2017 in China-have also posed a public health risk. PRV can establish latency in pigs, potentially leading to disease outbreaks upon reactivation. However, little is known about the PRV reactivation process, particularly in cases with other pathogens coinfection. We found that extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli and Streptococcus suis, common zoonotic bacteria
