Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS; "nodular tenosynovitis") and fibroma of tendon sheath (FTS) have traditionally been considered to be two points in a single neoplastic continuum. However, no systematic studies have addressed this concept directly to date. To more clearly define their relationship to one another, we studied five FTSs and seven typical GCTTSs by light microscopy and paraffin section immunohistochemistry. Tissue samples were stained for vimentin, desmin, smooth muscle actin (SMA), S100 protein, leukocyte common antigen (CD45), CD68 antigen (KP1), HAM56 antigen, alpha-1-a

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the pathogens most commonly involved in prosthetic joint infections, and when methicillin resistant, poses significant challenges in treatment, owing to its virulence and antibiotic resistance. Intravenous fosfomycin disodium is a broad-spectrum antibiotic recently introduced in clinical practice for treating osteoarticular infections caused by Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant pathogens. Continuous infusion administration of fosfomycin, by an elastomeric pump, is feasible thanks to its good stability at roo

The clinical diagnosis of synovial tumors and synovial proliferative processes is difficult, as symptoms and physical examination findings are often nonspecific. Advanced imaging modalities, such as MRI, high-resolution ultrasound, and computed tomography, can aid clinical decision-making by providing accurate diagnosis of such diseases in many cases. This article focuses on those specific imaging features of synovial tumors and proliferative processes that can provide accurate diagnosis and guide appropriate patient management.

We report the case of a young patient with knee pain, limited range of motion, and swelling due to an intra-articular hemangioma. Clinically, the symptoms and findings were similar to those of a meniscal lesion. The diagnosis of an intra-articular tumor was made using magnetic resonance imaging. The tumor was excised, and the definitive diagnosis was made histologically. After tumor excision, the patient was pain free.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be the site of bone, cartilaginous, or synovial tumors. There is no well-defined histological classification. We listed all benign tumors, malignant primitive tumors, and rare pseudo tumors of the TMJ. We provide a list to help for the diagnosis and the differential diagnosis of non-tumoral lesions by far the most frequent.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and describe the findings of complicated Baker cysts observed in a large series of knee MR studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 145 Baker cysts were detected out of a series of 382 (38%) consecutive patients with knee MR studies performed. Cysts were classified as simple (smooth walls, homogeneous content, signal intensity similar to that of the synovial fluid and with no changes in the surrounding tissues) or complicated (changes of wall, changes in the intensity of the content signal, presence of free bodies or changes in the surrounding tissues).

BACKGROUND: Extra-articular extension of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lesions may mimic primary pathology of adjacent compartments, leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate management.
PURPOSE: Building on our prior work describing intracranial extension of TMJ lesions, we sought to characterize the clinical presentation, imaging features, and pathologic distribution of extra-articular extracranial lesions across five anatomical compartments, and to evaluate the clinical impact of radiologic misclassification.
DATA SOURCES: A search of MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Embase, in accordance with PRISMA

PURPOSE: Radiation therapy (RT) is a common treatment for benign diseases in Germany. Because the treatment concepts are inconsistent, we conducted this pattern-of-care study on behalf of the German Cooperative Group on Benign Diseases to evaluate treatment standards in Germany.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Questionnaires were mailed to all radiation therapy facilities in Germany. We assessed the treatment equipment, annual number of patients, treatment indications, and, in particular, treatment strategies in patients with benign diseases in 2014.
RESULTS: We evaluated questionnaires returned by 1

Epithelioid sarcoma, a rare sarcoma with epithelial differentiation, most often occurs in the distal extremities; however, it may occur in essentially any location. With the recent recognition that the loss of expression of the tumor-suppressor gene INI-1 may be associated with epithelioid sarcoma, it has become clear that epithelioid sarcoma may occur in previously unsuspected locations such as bone. Only 2 cases of intra-articular epithelioid sarcoma have been previously reported. We retrieved 2 intra-articular cases coded as epithelioid sarcoma from our archives. Both expressed cytokeratins

INTRODUCTION: A form of tenosynovial giant cell tumors (GCTs) that diffusely affects the soft tissue lining of joints and tendons is called pigmented villonodular synovitis or PVNS. About equal percentages of men and women are often affected, and it typically affects young individuals. The most typical sites of PVNS are the knee and ankle, making PVNS of the wrist a rare presentation. Patients with PVNS might develop symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and only a handful of cases are reported in the literature. The gold standard of treatment has traditionally been surgical excision for lo

The recent progress of the biology of the locally aggressive sarcomas of soft tissues and related connective tissue tumors enabled to reclassify molecular and histological entities of the disease. Six subgroups of sarcomas are identified with specific molecular alterations, the targeted treatments of which are the object of this article: 1) sarcomas with specific translocations with fusion oncogenes (DFSP, PVNS); 2) sarcomas with tyrosine kinase mutations (KIT in GIST); 3) tumors with deletion of tumor suppressor genes (TSC in the PEComes, NF1 involved in type 1 neurofibromatosis; 4) sarcomas

The etiology of chronic diseases of the ankle joint comprises a wide spectrum including chronic inflammatory processes and chronic degenerative, tumorous and neuropathic processes, as well as some specific syndromes based on chronic changes of the ankle joint. Of the inflammatory processes, chronic juvenile arthritis (JVC) is the most common disease. However, also Reiter disease, psoriasis or chronic monoarthritid diseases such as gout, as well as granulomatous diseases (tuberculosis, sarcoidosis) and fungal infections, may affect the ankle joint in a chronic course. Chronic degenerative chang

Synovial and tenosynovial giant cell tumors only rarely arise in close proximity to the axial skeleton; to date, fewer than 30 examples have been reported in the English-language medical literature. In this report we describe the clinical, radiologic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings in 15 cases retrieved from our files. The study group comprised 7 males and 8 females, ranging in age from 17 to 44 years (mean age, 32 years). The tumors involved the cervical (n = 11), thoracic (n = 1), lumbar (n = 2), and sacrococcygeal (n = 1) regions and ranged in size from 1.0 to 6.0 cm in g

Benign neoplasms and tumor-like lesions constitute the majority of soft tissue masses in the foot and ankle. Therefore, malignant tumors are often unsuspected at this site and misdiagnosed clinically, especially if occurring in young individuals with unspecific or long-standing clinical symptoms. In addition to radiography, MR imaging represents the method of choice in evaluation of foot tumors. Because of their relatively characteristic imaging appearance, in most cases of benign soft tissue lesions of the foot and ankle a specific diagnosis can be suggested. Unfortunately, malignant tumors c

Magnetic resonance imaging of the knee was the first successful application of this technique to the articular system. The advantages of magnetic resonance imaging over arthrography include its noninvasive nature, the ability to evaluate the knee in multiple planes without patient repositioning, the absence of ionizing radiation, the capacity to evaluate the joint even in the presence of joint effusion, and the ability to examine the inner structure of the meniscus as well as its surface. Although magnetic resonance imaging initially was used to study the menisci and cruciate ligaments, the te

Giant cell tumors of the synovial tendon sheaths (GCTSTS) are a localized form of hemopigmented villonodular synovitis. They mainly affect the hands. This study aims to analyse the epidemiology, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of GCTSTS, to assess the results of surgical treatment and to identify risk factors for recurrences. We conducted a retrospective data collection from medical records of 50 patients with GCTSTS of the hand between 1992 and 2016 in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Hospital of Sahloul (Sousse-Tunisia). The clinical and epidemiological features of GCTSTS have
