Altered activation and functional asymmetry of exner's area but not the visual word form area in a child with sudden-onset, persistent mirror writing.

Mirror writing is often produced by healthy children during early acquisition of literacy, and has been observed in adults following neurological disorders or insults. The neural mechanisms responsible for involuntary mirror writing remain debated, but in healthy children, it is typically attributed to the delayed development of a process of overcoming mirror invariance while learning to read and write. We present an unusual case of sudden-onset, persistent mirror writing in a previously typical seven-year-old girl. Using her dominant right hand only, she copied and spontaneously produced all

A feasibility study of a 2-week self-compassionate letter-writing intervention for nontreatment seeking individuals with typical and atypical anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Most individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) do not seek treatment and shame is a common barrier. This study sought to determine whether a brief intervention designed to foster self-compassion would reduce shame and increase treatment motivation among nontreatment seeking individuals with AN. METHOD: Forty nontreatment seeking females with AN (75%) and atypical AN were randomly assigned to 2 weeks of a daily self-compassionate letter-writing intervention or a waitlist control condition. All participants completed pre, mid, and post questionnaires, and were weighed pre and post. RES

Is there information contained within the sentence-writing component of the mini mental state examination? A retrospective study of community dwelling older people.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between features of the MMSE written sentence and cognitive function, depression and disability. METHODS: MMSE sentences from 191 community dwelling individuals without dementia from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1921 (LBC1921) study were: (a) photocopied and (b) typed as written. Sentences were rated for objective criteria: word number and frequency, first person usage, time orientation, and letter case. Twenty healthy raters (50% male, age 20-26 years), blind to all other data, rated each handwritten and typed sentence for subjective criteria: legibilit

Revisiting L1 morphological effects on L2 online processing of morphologically complex words: the potentially confounding roles of cognateness and L1 writing system.

Previous studies have revealed conflicting results as regards whether second language (L2) learners decompose morphologically complex words during online reading or process them in a whole-word manner. To resolve such controversies, first language (L1) morphological characteristics have been proposed as one factor leading to variation in L2 performance. Evidence for the argument of L1 morphological effects includes (1) that L2 learners from an L1 with a similar/congruent morphological feature outperform those from an L1 without a similar corresponding morphological feature and (2) that there i

Life goal reconstruction for people with chronic health conditions: Feasibility of a brief internet-based writing intervention using a minimally monitored delivery.

Examination of people's narratives after significant life changes revealed that engaging in current and future goal reconstruction was associated with higher levels of well-being while a failure to disengage from "what might have been" was associated with lower levels of well-being. This work led to the development of a life goal writing intervention that has received empirical support with most studies conducted among nonclinical populations. This study aims to assess the feasibility of a brief and minimally monitored internet-delivered writing therapy developed to facilitate life goal recons

Expert reading coaching via technology: Investigating the reading, writing, and spelling outcomes of students in grades K-8 experiencing significant reading learning disabilities.

While qualitative research has shown great benefits for teachers who receive coaching, there is a paucity of experimental research examining students' academic outcomes after their teachers received ongoing support from a knowledgeable and experienced coach. Thus, a quasi-experimental design investigated the literacy outcomes of 452 students experiencing reading learning disabilities in grades K-8th whose special education and/or resource room teachers (n = 44) received student data-focused coaching support through on-site coaching, on-demand coaching (teachers could request support if needed)

Transforming narratives into educational tools: the collaborative development of a transformative learning tool based on Nicaraguan adolescents' creative writing about intimate partner violence.

The use of narrative has become increasingly popular in the public health, community development, and education fields. Via emotionally engaging plotlines with authentic, captivating characters, stories provide an opportunity for participants to be carried away imaginatively into the characters' world while connecting the story with their own lived experiences. Stories have been highlighted as valuable tools in transformative learning. However, little published literature exists demonstrating applications of stories in group-based transformative learning curricula. This paper describes the cre

A feed-forward UHRF1 read-write mechanism supports H3 multi- mono-ubiquitination and DNA methylation maintenance at CpG-sparse regions.

The epigenetic inheritance of mammalian DNA methylation requires DNMT1 and its E3 ligase cofactor UHRF1. At newly replicated chromatin, UHRF1 recognition of hemi-methylated DNA and histone H3 N-terminal tails directs catalysis of H3K14, H3K18, and/or H3K23 mono-ubiquitination to recruit DNMT1. While it is appreciated that UHRF1 can deposit multiple mono-ubiquitin marks on a single H3 tail and that DNMT1 recognizes this state through tandem ubiquitin interacting motifs, the mechanism that promotes successive ubiquitination and the biological function of multi-mono-ubiquitination are unknown. Ultra Compact and Broadband Fiber Facet Graphene Oxide Microlens Array Fabricated on a Beam-Expanding Fiber Facet Using Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing Technique.

We demonstrate an ultra-compact fiber facet graphene oxide (GO) microlenses array fabricated through femtosecond laser direct writing (FLDW). Taking advantage of the broadband transparency, mechanical, and laser-tunable optical properties of GO, the device realizes phase modulation in a 400 nm film, enabling multi-focus beam splitting and focusing. A coreless fiber segment is fusion-spliced to a standard single-mode fiber to expand the mode field, and a high-density array of 19 microlenses is integrated on the beam-expanding fiber facet; the device achieved focal lengths ranging from 8.0 to 9.

Large Language Models for Supporting Clear Writing and Detecting Spin in Randomized Controlled Trials in Oncology: Comparative Analysis of GPT Models and Prompts.

BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard for evaluating interventions in oncology, but reporting can be subject to "spin"-presenting results in ways that mislead readers about true efficacy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether large language models (LLMs) could provide a standardized approach to detect spin, particularly in the conclusions, where it most commonly occurs. METHODS: We randomly sampled 250 two-arm, single-primary end point oncology RCTs from 7 major medical journals published between 2005 and 2023. Two authors independently annotated
