Differences in pericoronitis knowledge among Chinese undergraduates: a cross-disciplinary survey in Northeastern Universities.

BACKGROUND: Pericoronitis, an inflammation of the gum around a partially erupted third molar (wisdom tooth), frequently affects young adults. Despite its prevalence, the level of awareness and understanding of pericoronitis among undergraduates in various academic fields remains poorly characterized, especially among students outside health-related majors. Improving this knowledge is important to encourage timely care and prevent complications. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in April 2025 among 664 first- and second-year undergraduates from three universities in Northeastern

The pathogenesis of excessive wear in the deciduous teeth of sheep.

The teeth and various supporting and ancillary tissues were examined post mortem from two flocks of sheep, one of which had previously shown high deciduous incisor wear. Sheep were killed in groups selected on clinical signs at equivalent ages from birth to 116 weeks of age. At the end of this time the lengths of clinical crowns of the remaining deciduous incisor teeth in the high wear flock were not measurable, whereas the other flock had up to 5.5 mm in visible crown. Using the cingulum as a marker, measurements were made from extracted teeth of the attrition of the crown and size of the roo

Clinical Assessment of a Newer Resin-based Bioactive Restorative Cement on Class II Cavities of Primary Molars: A Comparative Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary molars play a significant role in mastication, jaw alignment, and guiding permanent tooth eruption. However, their proximal surfaces are prone to decay due to anatomical challenges and cleansing difficulties, making restorative intervention challenges. While traditional materials such as dental amalgam, composite resin (CR), and glass ionomer cement (GIC) are commonly used, advancements in dental technology have introduced bioactive materials as promising alternatives, warranting further research to ensure optimal outcomes. AIM: The present study aimed to evaluate and co

Sex- and age-related morphological and functional differences in the skull of Eira barbara (Linnaeus, 1758) (Carnivora, Mustelidae).

BACKGROUND: Morphological differences related to age and sex have been extensively documented in Nearctic and Palearctic mustelids, largely due to the interest in the commercial management of species such as martens and fishers. However, sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic development in Neotropical species, such as the tayra (Eira barbara), remain poorly studied. METHODS: We investigated the skull development and sexual differences in E. barbara through qualitative and morphometric analyses of 376 skull specimens from museum collections. Specimens were classified into four age classes based on

Comprehensive Assessment of Dermatologic and Dysmorphic Manifestations in Patients With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS), a common chromosomal anomaly caused by trisomy of chromosome 21, is characterized by a broad spectrum of phenotypic characteristics across multiple organ systems, including cardiac defects and leukemia. Dermatological findings are prevalent among individuals with DS; however, these issues are frequently underrecognized and inadequately researched, resulting in a significant gap in the provision of comprehensive healthcare strategies. Given the increased life expectancy of patients with DS and delayed manifestation of many dermatoses, physicians are increasingly

FAM20A mutations and transcriptome analyses of dental pulp tissues of enamel renal syndrome.

AIM: Biallelic loss-of-function FAM20A mutations cause amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) type IG, better known as enamel renal syndrome (ERS), characterized by severe enamel hypoplasia, delayed/failed tooth eruption, intrapulpal calcifications, gingival hyperplasia and nephrocalcinosis. FAM20A binds to FAM20C, the Golgi casein kinase (GCK) and potentiates its function to phosphorylate secreted proteins critical for biomineralization. While many FAM20A pathogenic mutations have been reported, the pathogeneses of orodental anomalies in ERS remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to identify disease

Functional Properties of Two Distinct PTH1R Mutants Associated With Either Skeletal Defects or Pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Consistent with a vital role of parathyroid hormone (PTH) receptor type 1 (PTH1R) in skeletal development, homozygous loss-of-function PTH1R mutations in humans results in neonatal lethality (Blomstrand chondrodysplasia), whereas such heterozygous mutations cause a primary failure of tooth eruption (PFE). Despite a key role of PTH1R in calcium and phosphate homeostasis, blood mineral ion levels are not altered in such cases of PFE. Recently, two nonlethal homozygous PTH1R mutations were identified in two unrelated families in which affected members exhibit either dental and skeletal abnormalit

Ontogenetic and functional modularity in the rodent mandible.

The material properties of diets consumed by juvenile individuals are known to affect adult morphological outcomes. However, much of the current experimental knowledge regarding dietary effects on masticatory form is derived from studies in which individuals are fed a non-variable diet for the duration of their postweaning growth period. Thus, it remains unclear how intra-individual variation in diet, due to ontogenetic variation in feeding behaviors or seasonal resource fluctuations, affects the resulting adult morphology. Furthermore, the mandible is composed of multiple developmental and fu

Marked Improvement of Palmoplantar Pustulosis After the Reintroduction of Apremilast Following Initiation of Dental Infection Control and Periodontal Therapy.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent sterile pustules, erythema, scaling, and hyperkeratosis on the palms and soles. Oral infectious foci and periodontal inflammation have been implicated as aggravating factors, particularly in Japanese patients. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman with longstanding PPP and a previous course of apremilast that she had discontinued because of perceived insufficient benefit. At presentation, the Palmoplantar Pustulosis Area and Severity Index (PPPASI) score was 37.8. Dental evaluation identified multip

Overexpression of ameloblastin in secretory ameloblasts results in demarcated, hypomineralized opacities in enamel.

Introduction: Developmental defects of the enamel manifest before tooth eruption and include amelogenesis imperfecta, a rare disease of underlying gene mutations, and molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH), a prevalent disease in children originating from environmental and epigenetic factors. MIH enamel presents as the abnormal enamel marked by loss of translucency, demarcation between the healthy and affected enamel, and reduced mineral content. The pathophysiology of opaque, demarcated enamel lesions is not understood; however, the retention of enamel proteins in the matrix has been suggeste

Global trends in incidence of caries in permanent teeth of children aged 5 through 14 years, 1990 through 2019.

BACKGROUND: School-aged children are in the stage of permanent tooth eruption to replace primary teeth and this can be reached at a life stage when their health habits are being formed due to a large amount of time in school. However, data on the global trend in incidence of caries in permanent teeth in school-aged children are sparse. This study aimed to assess the trends in incidence of caries in permanent teeth in children aged 5 through 14 years from 1990 through 2019 at the global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: The authors collected data on incidence of caries in permanent teet

Incidence of enamel defects on permanent canine teeth following extraction of linguoverted mandibular deciduous canine teeth in dogs.

Interceptive orthodontics may be indicated in puppies exhibiting dental malocclusion with linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth to alleviate pain and prevent teeth interlock, which may affect growth and development of the mandibles. Historically extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth has been recommended as soon as a malocclusion is identified, often as early as 6-8 weeks of age and no later than 12 weeks of age. This early surgical intervention of deciduous teeth extractions risks potential damage to the developing permanent canine teeth resulting in enamel defects often ref

Scanning and three-dimensional-printing using computed tomography of the "Golden Boy" mummy.

Ancient Egyptian mummies represent an opportunity to learn more about the health, beliefs, and skills of humans in antiquity. A fully wrapped mummy, from a Late Ptolemaic cemetery (c.332-30 BC) in Edfu, Egypt, has been stored, unexamined, at the Cairo Egyptian Museum since 1916. We hypothesized that scanning and 3D-printing the mummy using Computed Tomography (CT) could help in documenting and promoting its public display. CT enabled non-invasive digital unwrapping and revealed a well-preserved mummy. Biological sex could be determined from the presence of male genitalia; epiphyseal fusion and

Effects of 3 different residual root treatments after post-and-core restoration: An in vitro fracture resistance experiment and finite element analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Crown-lengthening procedures (CLPs) and orthodontic eruption procedures (OEPs) improve the biomechanical properties of residual root restoration. However, their use is limited by clinic time, cost, and crown-root ratio. An inner shoulder retention form (ISRF) overcomes these limits; however, whether ISRF meets the biomechanical requirements is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro and finite element analysis (FEA) study was to evaluate the effects of 3 residual root treatments (ISRF, CLP, and OEP) on premolar fracture resistance and stress distribution after pos

A Contemporary Examination of First and Second Permanent Molar Emergence.

The emergence of first permanent molars (FPMs) and second permanent molars (SPMs) is an important developmental milestone influencing caries risk and the timing of sealant placement. Emergence times have been shown to vary by sex and race/ethnicity, while recent reports suggest a positive association with adiposity. Amid the changing demographics of the US population and the rising rates of pediatric overweight/obesity, we sought to examine the association of body mass index (BMI) with FPM/SPM emergence in a representative sample of US children and adolescents. We used cross-sectional data fro

Root resorption associated with ectopically erupting maxillary permanent canines: a computed tomography study.

The aims of this retrospective computed tomography (CT) study were to determine the occurrence of severe root resorption involving the pulpal canal of adjacent permanent teeth associated with ectopically erupting canines, and to verify the existence of related factors. The sample consisted of 255 consecutive patients (159 females and 96 males, mean age 18.4 and 16.8 years, respectively). Three hundred and thirty-four ectopic maxillary canines and adjacent teeth were analysed using CT images. Statistical significance was evaluated with chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. The results showed tha
