Policy implications of early onset breast cancer among Mexican-origin women.

BACKGROUND: Overall, Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed with a more advanced stage of breast cancer and are 20% more likely to die of breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women. It is estimated that from 2003 to 2006, $82.0 billion in direct medical care expenditures, in addition to 100,000 lives annually, could be saved by eliminating health disparities experienced by Latinos and increasing the use of up to 5 preventive services in the United States. An additional 3700 lives could be saved if 90% of women aged ≥40 years were recently screened for breast cancer. METHODS: The authors exa

"I belong to nowhere now": An interpretative phenomenological analysis of Pakistani migrant women's lived experiences of identity, nostalgia, exclusion and wellbeing in Norway.

BackgroundMigrant women's health and wellbeing are shaped by intersecting structures of gender, race, religion, and postcoloniality. Pakistani migrant women in Norway occupy a particular intersection of these structures, in which collectivistic kinship expectations, patriarchal norms, and postcolonial inheritance interact with Norwegian institutional gatekeeping. Despite a growing Pakistani-origin population in Norway, little qualitative research has examined how the identity work of recent first-generation Pakistani migrant women relates to their psychological and social wellbeing.ObjectivesT

The Healthy Migrant Families Initiative: development of a culturally competent obesity prevention intervention for African migrants.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity among immigrants remains an important area of study given the increasing migrant population in Australia and other developed countries, research on factors amenable to intervention is sparse. The aim of the study was to develop a culturally-competent obesity prevention program for sub-Saharan African (SSA) families with children aged 12-17 years using a community-partnered participatory approach. METHODS: A community-partnered participatory approach that allowed the intervention to be developed in collaborative partnership with communities was used. Three pilot st

[Behavioral problems in children of Turkish guest workers in Vienna].

This paper describes the behaviour disturbances and emotional problems of Turkish immigrant children aged 9 to 13 years living in Vienna. The children's behaviour was rated with Rutter's scales and the relationship of the results to any language problems, the socioeconomic situation and the sociocultural background of the immigrant families was then analyzed. A consecutive series of 111 Turkish and 25 Austrian children were rated by their parents and by both Turkish- and German-speaking teachers. Psychiatric symptoms of the children's parents were assessed with the symptom checklist SCL-90. Th

Profiles of Structural Violence in Hispanic/Latino Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Parents: the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Youth Study.

This study provides critical insights into the pervasive structural violence and compounded stress experienced by Hispanic/Latino caregivers, a population disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities that can adversely affect overall well-being. We analyzed data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Youth (n = 458) to identify structural violence exposure patterns among Hispanic/Latino caregivers/parents and examine how these patterns vary by birthplace and U.S. residency duration. Structural violence exposure was measured using six domains: chronic stress, perceived

Facilitators and Barriers to Healthy Midlife Transition among South Asian Immigrant Women in Canada: A Qualitative Exploration.

Background: South Asian immigrant women make up the largest visible minority in Canada, where visible minorities include persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour, and approximately half of these women are above the age of 35. Few studies have investigated the factors that impact the midlife transition for these women. This study aims to identify the facilitators and barriers experienced by South Asian immigrant women during the midlife transition. Methods: Two focus groups and ten one-on-one interviews about the midlife transition were held w

Post-traumatic growth among an ethnically diverse sample of adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Although some survivors of childhood cancer report significant psychosocial distress, many also report having derived benefits, or post-traumatic growth (PTG), from their cancer experience. This study examines PTG and its correlates among an ethnically diverse sample of adolescent/young adult (AYA) cancer survivors who have recently completed treatment. METHODS: Survivors of childhood cancer (n = 94; 47% Hispanic), ages 11-21 and within 6 months of completing cancer therapy, were recruited from three pediatric cancer centers. Social media, depression, and vaping susceptibility: A prospective cohort study of the combined effects in college students.

INTRODUCTION: Vaping has risen rapidly among Mexican-American college students in the United States (US), raising concerns about the influences of mental health and digital media. Mexican-Americans are the largest Hispanic subgroup in the US and may face unique sociocultural and environmental risk factors that increase the risk of vaping. While depression and problematic social media use (PSMU), characterized by excessive and compulsive use, are known risk factors, little research has examined their combined impact on vaping behavior. This study examined how PSMU and depressive symptoms indepe

Cultural alienation and psychological well-being in Mongolian pre-college students: a person-centered profiling study.

INTRODUCTION: As educational institutions worldwide strive to support minority students' academic success and psychological well-being, understanding the complex dynamics of cultural alienation becomes increasingly crucial. This study examines how cultural alienation-including cultural loneliness, separation, disharmony, and perceived discrimination-influences the psychological adaptation of Mongolian minority pre-college students in Inner Mongolia, where institutional practices and social dynamics predominantly reflect Han Chinese cultural norms. METHODS: A sample of 73 participants complete

Exploring the Immigrant Paradox: Nativity, Ethnicity, and Postpartum Mental Health Among Latinas in Central Texas.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions are a leading cause of maternal mortality. Within Latina ethnicity, being foreign-born has been associated with better health outcomes than being US born, but the relevance of this immigrant paradox to perinatal mental health remains underexplored. This study investigates whether ethnicity (Latina/non-Latina) and nativity (foreign vs. US born) are associated with differences in postpartum depression and anxiety within a sample of women in Central Texas. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective observational cohort (n = 76). Participants

Evaluating the Feasibility and Preliminary Outcomes of a Culturally Adapted Caregiver-Mediated Early Language and Literacy Intervention Delivered Within a Latino/a Community Nonprofit.

PURPOSE: Caregiver-mediated interventions may be particularly well suited to support the communication and early literacy development of Latino children. However, few interventions have been adapted and/or implemented for the Latino community. The present study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of a culturally adapted caregiver-mediated early language intervention within a Latino-serving community nonprofit. METHOD: The current study used a community-partnered, prospective design to evaluate child and caregiver outcomes after participating in virtual or in-person inte

Cultural food practices and sources of nutrition information among pregnant and postpartum migrant women from low- and middle-income countries residing in high income countries: A systematic review.

Women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) may engage in a range of cultural food practices during pregnancy, including restricting or avoiding foods high in protein and iron, and foods rich in vitamins and minerals. While research has explored the cultural food practices of pregnant women in LMICs, there is less understanding of the continued cultural food practices of women who migrate to high-income countries and then become pregnant. This systematic review explores the existing research on cultural food practices and sources of nutrition information among pregnant and postpartum mig

Association of Unfavorable Social Determinants of Health With Stroke/Transient Ischemic Attack and Vascular Risk Factors in Hispanic/Latino Adults: Results From Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that may contribute to the development of diseases, with a higher representation in underserved populations. Our objective is to determine the association of unfavorable SDOH with self-reported stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) and vascular risk factors (VRFs) among Hispanic/Latino adults living in the US. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. SDOH and VRFs were assessed using questionnaires and validated scales and measurements. Insurance Status and Biological and Psychosocial Determinants of Cardiometabolic Risk Among Mexican-Origin U.S. Hispanic/Latino Adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

Purpose: Hispanics/Latinos in the United States bear higher burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and associated complications compared with the general population. Health insurance coverage is also lower in this population. We examined the association of health insurance with biological and psychosocial determinants of cardiometabolic risk among U.S. Mexican-origin Hispanic/Latino adults with T2D. Methods: Participants were self-reported Hispanic/Latino adults with T2D diagnosis. Trained bilingual community health workers collected cross-sectional information on biological and psychosocial factors

The impact of depression and culture on responses to intrusive autobiographical memories: Cognitive appraisals, cognitive avoidance, and brooding rumination.

OBJECTIVES: Those with depression ascribe more negative appraisals to intrusive autobiographical memories and use maladaptive strategies to regulate intrusive memory distress. However, it is unknown whether these patterns extend to East Asian samples. This study investigated the influence of culture and depression on intrusive remembering. DESIGN: The study used a 2 (group: European Australian, East Asian) × 2 (depression: depressed, control) cross-sectional design, with an online intrusive memory diary. METHODS: European Australian (n = 46) and East Asian (n = 45) participants living in Aus
