Shape alterations of basal ganglia and thalamus in xenomelia.

Xenomelia is a rare condition characterized by the persistent desire for the amputation of physically healthy limbs. Associations with morphological alterations such as reduced cortical thickness and surface area. Nothing is known, however, about the potential involvement of subcortical structures. The thalamus and basal ganglia process, relay, and integrate sensorimotor information and are involved in the preparation and execution of movements. Moreover, both of these structures house somatotopic representations of all body parts. We therefore investigated subcortical correlates of xenomelia

[Aesthetic/Plastic Surgery in Children as Seen from the Perspective of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy].

Physical deformities may cause psychological stress and lead to psychological disorders in children and adolescents. On the other hand, the correction of non-pathological conditions is a legal issue in patients unable to consent, a group that is partly made up of minors. This article provides an overview on available evidence on the psychological consequences of physical deformities, psychiatric contraindications for plastic surgery due to psychological disorders, and on the issue of minors' ability to consent.

Dysmorphic features, cognitive disability, chronic inflammation, and predisposition to vascular disease in two sisters: a new autosomal recessive disorder?

A 20-year-old woman presented with mental retardation and a history of stroke related to moyamoya disease at the age of 8 years. She had cognitive impairment which became more pronounced after the stroke. This patient's parents were first cousins and six close family relatives had strokes in their 60s or 70s. The patient's 16-year-old sister had learning disability, chronic muscle pain, and an ECG suggestive of previous hypoxemic heart injury. The two sisters had similar dysmorphic facial appearance including a prominent philtrum, bulbous nose, and severe acne. They both had increased subcutan

Perceived Stigmatization among Dermatological Outpatients Compared with Controls: An Observational Multicentre Study in 17 European Countries.

Perceived stigmatization places a large psychosocial burden on patients with some skin conditions. Little is known about the experience of stigmatization across a wide range of skin diseases. This observational cross-sectional study aimed to quantify perceived stigmatization and identify its predictors among patients with a broad spectrum of skin diseases across 17 European countries. Self-report questionnaires assessing perceived stigmatization and its potential predictors were completed by 5,487 dermatology outpatients and 2,808 skin-healthy controls. Dermatological diagnosis, severity, and

Towards a Rational and Efficient Diagnostic Approach in Children Referred for Growth Failure to the General Paediatrician.

Based on a recent Dutch national guideline, we propose a structured stepwise diagnostic approach for children with growth failure (short stature and/or growth faltering), aiming at high sensitivity for pathologic causes at acceptable specificity. The first step is a detailed clinical assessment, aiming at obtaining relevant clinical clues from the medical history (including family history), physical examination (emphasising head circumference, body proportions and dysmorphic features) and assessment of the growth curve. The second step consists of screening: a radiograph of the hand and wrist

Principal and additional DSM-IV disorders for which outpatients seek treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological studies indicate that most patients in the community do not get treatment for psychiatric disorders. It is unknown whether persons who present for outpatient psychiatric services seek treatment for all the disorders they have or only for the principal disorder for which they are seeking treatment. The goal of this study was to determine which axis I psychiatric disorders motivate patients to seek treatment. METHODS: Four hundred outpatients at a hospital-affiliated, community-based, psychiatric clinical practice were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Intervie

Psychometric Evaluation of the Drive for Muscularity Scale and the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory among Brazilian Cisgender Gay and Bisexual Adult Men.

Despite high levels of muscularity concerns among sexual-minority men, most of the existing literature on the drive for muscularity and muscle dysmorphia focuses on heterosexual men and has mainly been conducted in Western and English-speaking regions. The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS) and the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) in Brazilian cisgender gay and bisexual adult men who were 18-50 years old. We evaluated the factor structure of both measures using a two-step, split-sample exploratory (EFA; n = 704) and c

Mediators in the dissonance eating disorder prevention program.

Previous research has supported thin-ideal internalization as a partial mediator of the effects of the dissonance eating disorder prevention program. The current study replicated previous findings and examined an additional mediator, body dissatisfaction, hypothesized to account for partial intervention effects. As a secondary goal, we developed a more rigorous and accurate test of mediation that accounted for the temporal, causal interplay between mediator and outcome, and controlled for "reverse mediation". Results from a sample of 71 high-risk females (M age = 19.8, SD = 1.3) who participat

The Influence of Trauma on Autobiographical Memory in the Assessment of Somatoform Disorders According to DSM IV Criteria.

Recalling an event impairs an individual's later ability to recall related knowledge. Impairment in this retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) produces a dysfunction in autobiographical memory. This, like somatic symptoms, has been documented in trauma and sexual abuse survivors. To investigate the relationship between past trauma and somatoform disorders, and the role of memory recall dysfunction in this relationship, three sex-matched groups were constituted using DSM IV criteria: Somatoform (SD) (n. 22) other Psychiatric Disorders (PD) (n. 26) and Healthy Subjects (HS) (n. 35). Responses to St

Array-CGH is an effective first-tier diagnostic test for EFTUD2-associated congenital mandibulofacial dysostosis with microcephaly.

Mandibulofacial dysostosis with microcephaly (MFDM) is a sporadic malformation syndrome with severe craniofacial abnormalities, microcephaly, developmental delay, and dysmorphic features. Most cases of clinically diagnosed MFDM remain genetically unexplained, and to the best of our knowledge a total of 35 patients, 31 different mutations, 4 deletions, and 6 reports have been published. Our proband was born at 36 weeks gestation with microcephaly, microcrania, cleft palate, severe retrognathia, oral and pharyngeal dysphagia, bilateral proximal radioulnar synostosis, 11 thoracic ribs, abnormal m

A real-life snapshot: Evaluating exposures to low energy availability in male athletes from various sports.

Problematic low energy availability (LEA) is the underlying cause of relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). Male specific etiology, as well as the duration and degree of LEA exposures resulting in REDs remain to be adequately described. The present study aimed to assess occurrences of LEA (energy availability [EA] <25 kcal/kg fat-free mass/day) in male athletes from various sports over 7 days. Associations between number of LEA days, physiological measures, and body image concerns were subsequently evaluated. The athletes recorded their weighed food intakes and training via photo-assisted

Two novel GJA1 variants in oculodentodigital dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) is a rare disorder with pleiotropic effects involving multiple body systems, caused by mutations in the gap junction protein alpha 1 (GJA1) gene. GJA1 gene encodes a polytopic connexin membrane protein, Cx43, that is a component of connexon membrane channels. METHODS: We describe two unrelated female probands referred for a genetic review in view of a dysmorphic clinical phenotype. RESULTS: Two novel missense mutations in GJA1 that substitute conserved amino acids in the first and second transmembrane domains (NM_000165.5: c.77T>C p.Leu26Pro and

Penile size and the 'small penis syndrome'.

The male is often troubled by concerns that his penis is not large enough to satisfy his partner or himself. He is ashamed to have others view his penis, especially in the flaccid state. Such concerns might be unfounded in reality and might be a presentation of social anxiety or some other clinical problem, such as erectile dysfunction. Concern over the size of the penis, when such concern becomes excessive, might present as the 'small penis syndrome', an obsessive rumination with compulsive checking rituals, body dysmorphic disorder, or as part of a psychosis. However, it is often a worry tha

Clinical and Dermoscopic Evaluation of Periorbital Melanosis and Its Psychological Impact and Effect on Quality of Life: A Descriptive Study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

INTRODUCTION: Periorbital melanosis (POM) is a poorly defined condition that is becoming an increasing aesthetic concern. With its multifactorial origin, it necessitates a thorough assessment of targeted multimodal treatments. The psychological impact and underlying pathogenesis have been underexplored, as evidenced by the gap between the roughly 100 indexed articles and the 150 million search engine results on treatments for dark circles. This descriptive study aims to explore the clinical and dermoscopic evaluation of POM and its impact on quality of life. METHODS: This descriptive prospect

Risk and resilience in eating disorders: differentiating pathways among psychosocial predictors.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) represent a rising global health concern. The current study takes a multivariate approach to examine psychological (i.e., perfectionism, anxiety sensitivity [AS], emotion dysregulation) and sociocultural factors (i.e., body dissatisfaction) that may relate to risk and resilience in EDs. METHODS: Participants were 698 undergraduate students (Mage = 21, SDage = 4.02), mainly female (71%) and Hispanic (61.6%), who participated in an online survey assessing perfectionism, emotion dysregulation, AS, body dissatisfaction, and eating behaviors. RESULTS: The results

Body Image Disorders and Surgical Timing in Patients Affected by Poland Syndrome: Data Analysis of 58 Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a congenital anomaly of pectoralis muscles, breast, chest, and upper arm. Several studies have reported that patients affected by chest wall deformities often experience body image disorders and decreased quality of life. Cosmetic corrective surgery is generally postponed until physical development is achieved, and latissimus dorsi flap surgery is usually suggested. This study aims to propose a new surgical timing for these patients. METHODS: Patients affected by Poland syndrome (n = 58) and control patients (n = 50) were included in the study, and their body-re
