Outcomes of phacoemulsification in patients with uveitis at a tertiary center in São Paulo, Brazil: a review of cases from 2007 to 2012.

PURPOSE:: To evaluate the outcomes of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in eyes with uveitis. METHODS:: Consecutive patients with uveitis and cataracts who had phacoemulsification and acrylic IOL implantation during 2007-2012 were evaluated for visual outcomes, etiology, and complications. Inflammation was controlled for at least 3 months before surgery, and oral prednisone (0.5 mg/kg/day) was administered to patients with non-infectious uveitis. RESULTS:: This study investigated 45 eyes in 38 patients with a mean age of 52 ± 12.5 years. The most common etiologies

Short-term effect of topical brinzolamide 1%-timolol 0.5% fixed combination on human central corneal thickness.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term effect of fixed combination of brinzolamide 1% and timolol 0.5% (FCBT) application on human central corneal thickness (CCT). METHODS: This prospective clinical study included 97 patients having Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification. Patients were randomized to receive apraclonidine hydrochloride 0.5% (APRA) (n=48) or FCBT (n=49) at 1 h before laser surgery. The baseline CCT was evaluated by ultrasonographic pachymetry from the central region ∼1 h before the laser procedure. CCT measurements were applied just before the laser

Comparative effects of TGF-β2/Smad2 and TGF-β2/Smad3 signaling pathways on proliferation, migration, and extracellular matrix production in a human lens cell line.

The signaling pathway of transforming growth factor β2 (TGF-β2)/Smad plays an important role in the pathological process in posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery. Smad2 and Smad3 are both receptor-regulated Smads (R-Smads) of the TGF-β2 signaling pathway. We aim to find which among Smad2, Smad3, and Smad2&3 plays a key role in PCO pathology. The signal characteristics of TGF-β2 and Smad proteins in the human lens cell line HLE-B3 were investigated. Smad2, Smad3, or Smad2&3 were silenced using small interfering RNA. We then tested cell proliferation by 3-(4,5-dimethylthia

PURPOSE: The outcomes of cataract surgery have been well reported in rural China; however, the situation in the urban population remains unclear. This study assessed the outcomes of cataract surgery in urban southern China. METHODS: Data were gathered from the Liwan Eye Study, a population-based, cross-sectional study conducted in people aged 50 years or more in the Liwan District of Guangzhou. Presenting and best corrected visual acuity and a detailed eye examination were performed. For all aphakic and pseudophakic participants identified, information on the date, setting, type, and complica

FGF-2 counteracts loss of TGFbeta affected cells from rat lens explants: implications for PCO (after cataract).

PURPOSE: While cataract surgery initially benefits most patients, many suffer secondary loss of vision because of posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Lens epithelial cells left behind at surgery become aberrant and migrate into the light path. TGF-beta (TGFbeta) appears to play a key role in this process by inducing the cells to undergo an epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Paradoxically, it also typically induces them to undergo apoptotic death. The present study was undertaken to investigate the hypothesis that FGF plays a role in PCO formation by promoting the survival of abnormal cells

Photothermal and cascade ROS generative multilayer as intraocular lens surface coating for effective posterior capsular opacification inhibition.

Cataract is the leading cause for blindness. While the intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the only effective treatment in cataract surgery. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most frequent complication after cataract surgery, mainly resulting from the proliferation and migration of residual human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) within the capsular bag. While surface modification of IOL has helped slow its progression, long-term effectiveness and biocompatibility remain major challenges. Supraphysiological concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by natural enzyme stim

Immunomodulatory treatment and surgical management of idiopathic uveitis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis in children: a French survey practice.

BACKGROUND: Surgeries for idiopathic uveitis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis in children are complex because of the high risk of inflammatory postoperative complications. There is no consensus about treatment adaptation during the perioperative period. The objectives of this study are to report the therapeutic changes made in France and to determine whether maintaining or stopping immunosuppressive therapies is associated with an increased risk of surgical site infection or an increased risk of uveitis or arthritis flare-up. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort st

Aldose reductase inhibition enhances lens regeneration in mice.

After cataract surgery, epithelial cells lining the anterior lens capsule can transition to one of two divergent pathways, including fibrosis which leads to posterior capsular opacification (PCO), or lens fiber cell differentiation which leads to regeneration of lens material. We previously showed that the PCO response can be suppressed with aldose reductase (AR) inhibitors. In this present study we show that AR inhibition, both genetic and pharmacologic with Sorbinil, can augment the process of lens regeneration. Extracapsular lens extraction (ECLE) was carried out in C57BL/6 (WT), AR overexp
