One of the hypotheses to explain the neural mechanisms underlying rhythmic behaviours suggests that the central nervous system has the intrinsic capacity to produce repetitive, rhythmic output to the muscles involved in the response by means of a neuronal circuit named central pattern generator (CPG). The occurrence of rhythmic motor patterns during ejaculatory behaviour in mammals, which includes the genital motor pattern, has been shown. A CPG might regulate the timing of the repetitive muscular responses that constitute the ejaculatory motor pattern. The objective of the present study was t

A new hypothesis is presented to explain the mechanism of non-rejection of a natural allograft: the mammalian fetus during early development. Using the rabbit as a model, it is proposed here that uteroglobin (UG., MW. 15,800) synthesized in the uterus during early pregnancy, crosslinks with beta 2-microglobulin (part of the H-2 and HL-A antigens) on the embryonic cell surface. This crosslinking is achieved by the enzyme transglutaminase (coagulation factor XIIIa), which has a 4--5 fold increased activity in the uterus during early pregnancy. The conversion of pre-uteroglobin (Pre-UG) to uterog

RATIONALE: Male rats trained to associate a neutral odor (almond) with nonreceptive females during their initial sexual experiences develop a conditioned sexual inhibition (CSI) toward the female bearing the olfactory cue when given a choice in a final copulatory preference test between two receptive females (one unscented and one scented) in an open field. We have previously shown that this CSI can be abolished by acute alcohol before the final copulatory preference test.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether acute treatment with d-amphetamine could also disrupt CSI.
METHODS: Male rats received 20

Hytrosaviridae family members replicate in the salivary glands (SGs) of their adult dipteran hosts and are transmitted to uninfected hosts via saliva during feeding. Despite inducing similar gross symptoms (SG hypertrophy; SGH), hytrosaviruses (SGHVs) have distinct pathobiologies, including sex-ratio distortions in tsetse flies and refusal of infected housefly females to copulate. Via unknown mechanism(s), SGHV replication in other tissues results in reduced fecundity in tsetse flies and total shutdown of vitellogenesis and sterility in housefly females. We hypothesized that vitellogenesis shu

Flutamide, when administered subcutaneously to female rats at doses of 3, 10, or 30 mg/kg/day during late pregnancy (gestational days 16-21), significantly and dose-dependently decreased anogenital distance (AGD) of the male offspring in each dose group compared to controls. Significant delays in preputial separation were found in males at a dose of 30 mg/kg, but body weight gain was not inhibited. Cryptorchidism and absence of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles were found in males at doses > or = 10 mg/kg, and testicular hypoplasia at a dose of 30 mg/kg. Hypospadias was noted in all dose

Speculation that the release of oxytocin by orgasm in the human female during coitus facilitates fertility by enhancing uterine sperm transport has been criticized as having no unequivocal empirical human evidence. However, a counter claim that this supports human "exceptionalism" as some form of uterine sperm transport occurs in other species. This is a misconception as it ignores that human uterine peristalsis, powered by contractions of the smooth muscle of the archimyometrium, facilitates sperm transport even without any systemic oxytocin involvement. Moreover, examination of various uniqu

BACKGROUND: The Caenorhabditis elegans male exhibits a stereotypic behavioral pattern when attempting to mate. This behavior has been divided into the following steps: response, backing, turning, vulva location, spicule insertion, and sperm transfer. We and others have begun in-depth analyses of all these steps in order to understand how complex behaviors are generated. Here we extend our understanding of the sperm-transfer step of male mating behavior.
RESULTS: Based on observation of wild-type males and on genetic analysis, we have divided the sperm-transfer step of mating behavior into fou

Recently, we reported that male accessory sex gland (ASG) secretions protect sperm genomic integrity by demonstrating that DNA damage was more extensive in sperm not exposed to the secretions. The present study was conducted to find out if ASGs secrete the main antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx or GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) and if the most abundant one, SOD, can protect those sperm that were not exposed to ASG secretions against NADPH-induced oxidative stress. Four experimental groups of male golden hamsters were used: intact animals with proven ferti

The evidence reviewed suggests that in all mammalian species the adult male's ability to display masculine coital behavior depends in part on exposure of the developing brain to testicular testosterone or its metabolites. In many mammals, particularly rodents, ruminants, and some carnivores, perinatal exposure to androgen also causes behavioral defeminization, i.e., reduced capacity to display typically feminine coital behavior in response to gonadal hormones in adulthood. The data reviewed suggest that no such process occurs in certain other mammalian species, including ferret, rhesus monkey,

The aim of this review was to briefly recapitulate the most important mechanisms involved in ovulation in the Mammals. The rabbit served as a model for the study of reflex ovulation. The triggering of ovulation by coitus was shown to be dependent on the activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis by sensory signals of multiple origin. The fundamental aspects of the hormonal and nervous machinery that governs spontaneous ovulation have been envisaged. The timing of LH ovulatory release and the mechanisms of action of this hormone at the ovarian level have been defined. Evidence was given that

1. GABA, the GABAA receptor agonist, muscimol, and the GABAB receptor agonist, baclofen, were tested to study the involvement of the GABA neurotransmitter system in control of behaviour in the freshwater pulmonate snail, Lymnaea stagnalis L. Single injections of GABA (1-10 micrograms/ gbw) into the haemocoel of intact snails elicits a sequence of behavioural changes subsequently affecting feeding, locomotion, escape reactions, male mating behaviour and respiration. 2. Both muscimol and baclofen mimic distinct aspects of GABA action implying that the GABA action is mediated by both types of rec

Vaginal-cervical stimulation induces a number of physiological and behavioral events, including the facilitation of mating behavior. Although the facilitation of one component of mating behavior, lordosis, by vaginal-cervical stimulation does not require the presence of progesterone, it appears to be mediated by neural progestin receptors. Abundant evidence suggests that dopamine may play a role in the neural circuitry activated by vaginal-cervical stimulation, including the mating-induced release of dopamine in progestin receptor-containing areas of the brain, changes in the activational stat

Erection is an essential process which requires the male penis for copulation. This copulatory process depends on the vascular dynamic regulation of the penis. The corpus cavernosum (CC) in the upper (dorsal) part of the penis plays a major role in regulating blood flow inside the penis. When the CC is filled with blood, the sinusoids, including micro-vessels, dilate during erection. The CC is an androgen-dependent organ, and various genital abnormalities including erectile dysfunction (ED) are widely known. Previous studies have shown that androgen deprivation by castration results in signifi

Colony cages are commonly used in China for the natural mating of layer breeders. However, feather pecking (FP) is a major problem in this system, and feather damage mainly due to FP needs to be alleviated. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of nest boxes provided in colony cages. Each colony cage confined 10 roosters and 90 laying hens. The use of nest boxes as it relates to age, feather damage, sexual behavior, fertility, and fearfulness was evaluated. Thyroid hormones, which are considered to be physiological indicators of various forms of stress in poultry and may b

3-Monochloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) is a food contaminant that is often found in foods containing acid-hydrolyzed (AH) protein, like seasonings and savory food products. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of 3-MCPD on male fertility, sperm, and hormonal levels and its antifertility mechanism. In vivo male fertility testing was performed to observe the adverse effects of 3-MCPD on the functioning of the male reproductive system and pregnancy outcome. 3-MCPD (0.01-5 mg/kg) was administered daily by gavage to Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats for 4 wk. At the end of the

Paw development of CD-1 mice is uniquely sensitive to 2-methoxyethanol (ME) given by gavage (po) on gestation day (gd) 11 (copulation plug day = gd 0). The relation between induction of paw dysmorphogenesis and disposition of po ME (3.3 or 4.6 mmol/kg) in the maternal and conceptus compartments was investigated. The expression of digit malformations depends on metabolism of ME to methoxyacetic acid (MAA). ME and MAA were equipotent in causing teratogenicity. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) catalyzes the initial rate-limiting oxidation that leads to embryotoxicity. The ADH inhibitor 4-methylpyrazol

OBJECTIVE: To observe the intervention effect of Qiaoshao Prescription (QSP) on premature ejaculation (PE) induced by 8-OH-DPAT in male rats and explore its possible action mechanism.
METHODS: Seventy-two male Wistar rats were equally randomized into six groups, blank control, PE model control, low-, medium- and high-dose QSP, and dapoxetine. The PE model was established by injection of 8-OH-DPAT into the subarachnoid space of the lumbosacral spinal cord. Four weeks after modeling, the rats in the blank control and PE model control groups with gavaged with normal saline at 10 ml/kg/d, those i

In order to develop a reliable method of oestrus detection in captive southern hairy-nosed (SHN) wombats, the reproductive behaviour of four groups of adult animals (1 male:2 female) was monitored using video surveillance and activity using movement-sensitive radio transmitters for a period of 12 months. During this time faecal samples were collected every 3 days and subsequently analysed for progesterone and oestradiol-17beta metabolites. In an attempt to induce and characterise oestrus-specific behaviour, each female was administered a subcutaneous injection of either 0.01 (n=2), 0.1 (n=4) o
