The aim of the present study was to clinically assess the peri-implant and periodontal conditions 1 year after placement of oral implants (ITI Dental Implant System) in partially edentulous patients. In all, 127 patients (median age 50 years, range 17 to 79) were examined. They were all treated according to a concept of comprehensive dental care and had received fixed partial dentures (FPD). Significant differences were observed between implants and contralateral control teeth with respect to mean pocket probing depth (PPD) (2.55 mm at implants/2.02 mm at teeth), mean probing attachment level

The rehabilitation of edentulous posterior maxilla is a challenging task that could be complicated by the availability of low-density and reduced height of alveolar bone. Patients were enrolled in this study upon the presence of type IV bone and residual bone height <5 mm in posterior maxilla. Novel procedure for transalveolar sinus floor elevation was described to insert 10 short implants in 4 patients. Neither implant failure nor prosthetic failure was observed during a follow-up of 44 ± 3 months. Mesial bone loss of 0.5 ± 0.6 mm and a distal bone loss 1.3 ± 0.9 mm were measured after 35 ± 4

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of prosthodontic treatment and management on oral function and oral-health-related patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in older adults with tooth loss.
METHODS: A systematic search of four databases identified clinical studies (≥ 10 participants) reporting functional or PROM outcomes in partially or fully edentulous adults ≥ 65 years rehabilitated with dental prostheses for ≥ 6 months. Pooled standardized mean differences in pre-post changes were estimated by prosthesis type and follow-up using random-effects models (REML), with heterogeneity assessed by

BACKGROUND: Cleft palate fistulas of the anterior hard palate following previous repair are a challenging surgical problem. In addition to nasal regurgitation and potential adverse effects on speech, these fistulas may necessitate obturation with a removable dental prosthesis and can mitigate a fixed prosthodontic dental reconstruction. The authors present a method of repair using cancellous bone graft and only native palatal mucosa.
METHODS: The authors carried out a retrospective review of 27 consecutive patients who underwent anterior palate fistula repair performed by a single surgeon ove

Background. Designing a high strength all-ceramic fixed partial denture with favorable esthetics can be challenging for clinicians; this study aimed to evaluate the effect of connector size and design on the fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia fixed dental prostheses. Methods. Two groups of twenty 3-unit monolithic zirconia (Sirona inCoris TZI, Sirona Dental Systems GmbH) bridges, extending from the mandibular first premolar to the first molar with different connector sizes (9 mm2 and 12 mm2), were divided into two subgroups with different connector designs (round and sharp). The evaluation of complex facial-cranial trauma and subsequent restoration requires multidisciplinary treatment planning for optimal success and patient satisfaction. Patients with bilateral subcondylar fractures and facial-dental trauma are invariably challenging. Consideration of total joint replacement, along with the comprehensive evaluation of facial-dental esthetics and occlusion is critical for an optimal long-term outcome and for patient comfort. This patient treatment illustrates team cooperation and an optimal patient treatment outcome with long-term follow-up in the reconstruction o

The young dental patient with maxillary lateral incisor agenesis, maxillary canine impaction, and cystic fibrosis presents considerable challenges to the dentist. An interdisciplinary approach is described here for the orthodontist and restorative dentist to plan and work together with the patient's and parents' cooperation and consent. Despite some compromises, a successful outcome was achieved, as demonstrated in this case report. The use of conservative yet esthetic and durable fixed replacement prostheses is highlighted. Congenitally absent maxillary lateral incisors, impacted maxillary ca

Subpontic osseous hyperplasia (SOH) is a growth of bone occurring on the edentulous ridge beneath the pontics of fixed partial dentures (FPDs). This report describes a case of bisphosphonate- (BP-) related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) in a SOH patient followed by deciduation of the bony lesion. A 73-year-old woman visited a dental clinic after experiencing pain and swelling beneath the pontics of a FPD that had been inserted 15 years ago. The pontics were removed, but the symptoms persisted and she was referred to our hospital. There was an osseous bulge and gum swelling around the edentul

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous disorder of connective tissue that manifests mainly as skeletal deformity and bone fragility. Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) is sometimes an accompanying symptom of OI. The treatment protocol of these patients varies according to the clinical appearance. The case report here describes complete mouth rehabilitation of an 18-year-old male patient with OI and DI using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technique of metal-ceramic restorations and zirconium all-ceramic crowns. DMLS is an additive metal fabrication technology that is simpler, more pre

Adult orthodontics has been an area of increasing focus in recent times. Comprehensive treatment of adults is more challenging due to a myriad of problems that coexist in an adult that makes treatment planning more challenging. A large number of individuals seek dental care because of aesthetic reasons, that is, the desire to look more attractive by improving their smiles. The role an attractive smile plays on a person's self-image and confidence cannot be overemphasized. Evaluating and treating patients for the purpose of smile design often involves a multi-discipline approach. Achieving an i

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2002eng
Numerous oral complications have been documented as a consequence of chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer. One not so well documented consequence of this treatment is avascular necrosis or osteonecrosis of the underlying bone. In this case report, osteonecrosis of the maxilla in a 48-year-old female patient who was treated for acute myelogenous leukemia is presented. The patient had successfully completed both induction and consolidation chemotherapy without steroid administration. Possible causes and difficulties in diagnosis were reviewed.

AIM: Oral rehabilitation of a child with Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS).
BACKGROUND: JBS is an extremely rare inherited disorder characterized by unusually small nose that appears 'beak shaped' due to the absence (aplasia) or underdevelopment (hypoplasia) of the nostrils (nasal alae), abnormally small, malformed primary (deciduous) teeth and misshapen or absent secondary (permanent) teeth, hearing disorder, hypothyroidism, dwarfism, malabsorption and mental retardation. It is sometimes described as a form of ectodermal dysplasia.
CASE REPORT: Oral findings in JBS are very obscure in the li

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of inlay-retained fixed dental prostheses (IRFDPs) with a new design made from a zirconia ceramic.
METHODS: Twenty-three 3-unit IRFDPs were placed in 23 patients, restoring five second premolars and 18 first molars. Preparations were performed in accordance with general principles for ceramic inlay restorations and modified with a retainer-wing bevel preparation in the enamel at the buccal and oral sides. The frameworks were scanned and milled out of zirconia ceramic, using the InLab CAD/CAM-system and the

As the use of dental implants became a widespread and acceptable treatment modality, with an overall good long-term prognosis, treatment concepts changed reciprocally. Nowadays, dental implants are considered routine and are preferred over other modalities such as removable or fixed partial dentures or etched cast restorations supported by neighboring teeth. However, we often find clinical situations that challenge the placement of an implant because of insufficient space. Congenitally missing tooth, loss of a tooth because of periodontal disease, long-lasting extracted sites, or lost tooth st

BACKGROUND: The interest in the benefits of immediate loading of titanium implants has recently involved fixed prostheses for partially edentulous areas. The advantages of this approach well justify the need for extending the procedure to all regions of the mouth. Current available clinical literature on this subject is incomplete.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical outcome of the immediate loading of Brånemark System implants (Nobel Biocare AB, Gothenburg, Sweden) inserted with enhanced initial stability principally in posterior sites (78%).
