BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease associated with a wide variety of complications and manifestations secondary to the effects of underlie inflammatory process. In about 30% of the patients with Crohn's disease can be found extra-intestinals symptoms. Nephrolithiasis is one of them and the appearance of kidney stones, mainly of oxalate of calcium, is more common in these patients than in general population.
AIM: To evaluate urinary metabolic factors potentially involved in renal stones formation on patients with Crohn's disease.
METHODS: We evaluated 29 patients wit

OBJECTIVE: Liver transplantation is currently the most treatment for fulminant hepatitis, end-stage liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-originated metabolic diseases in children. With technological advances, improvements in surgical techniques and immunosuppressive therapy protocols have increased 1-year survival rates to 80%-90%. Our center successfully performs both living donor and cadaveric liver transplants in children. This study retrospectively analyzed the preoperative and postoperative data of 72 pediatric patients who underwent liver transplantation between July 2022 a

BACKGROUND: Although multiple variables have been shown to affect outcomes in pediatric lithotripsy (ESWL), there is no consensus on the same. Nomograms combine multiple variables and provide an objective prediction of outcomes. Two nomograms have been previously described and validated in two studies from the same geographical area. External validation in multiple settings is needed, as a nomogram's performance may vary with time, geographical area and clinical scenario.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify variables influencing pediatric ESWL outcomes, validate published nomograms and d

IMPORTANCE: Oxalate is a potentially toxic terminal metabolite that is eliminated primarily by the kidneys. Oxalate nephropathy is a well-known complication of rare genetic disorders and enteric hyperoxaluria, but oxalate has not been investigated as a potential contributor to more common forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether urinary oxalate excretion is a risk factor for more rapid progression of CKD toward kidney failure.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study assessed 3123 participants with stages 2 to 4 CKD who enrolled in the Chron

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, there has been increased incidence of urolithiasis in children. Changing nutritional patterns and sedentary lifestyles predispose to urolithiasis, as well as to the global rise in obesity. It has been established that the prevalence of high body mass index (BMI) is increasing in the pediatric population. The aim of the present study was to incorporate 24-h urine metabolic analysis results with BMI values to evaluate the tendency towards stone formation in children.
METHODS: Eighty-four children were recruited to the study, stratified into three BMI categories as lo

OBJECTIVES: The interaction between calcium oxalate deposition and urinary tract infection is not well established. We aimed to identify the association between these and to determine the role of calcium oxalate deposition on interstitial fibrosis development.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Renal allograft biopsies of 967 patients were reviewed to identify those with calcium oxalate deposition in the renal allograft, with 27 (2.8%) identified. Follow-up biopsies were conducted to reevaluate for calcium oxalate presence and interstitial fibrosis development. At time of biopsy, presence of urinary trac

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Horseshoe kidneys are a complex anatomic variant of fused kidneys, with a 20% reported incidence of associated calculi. Anatomic causes such as high insertion of the ureter on the renal pelvis and obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction are thought to contribute to stone formation via impaired drainage, with urinary stasis, and an increased incidence of infection. In this multi-institutional study, we evaluated whether metabolic factors contributed to stone development in patients with horseshoe kidneys.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 37 patients wit

INTRODUCTION: AA amyloidosis (inflammatory amyloidosis) is a rare but serious complication of chronic inflammatory diseases. Its etiological spectrum is broad, potentially contributing to delayed diagnosis, particularly when the underlying cause is rare or poorly recognized. We developed the AA Challenge, an interactive French-language online educational program based on clinical cases, to improve the recognition of the causes of AA amyloidosis among French-speaking physicians.
METHODS: The AA Challenge was an international, year-long educational program for French-speaking physicians. It con

OBJECTIVE: To compare stone composition and serum/urine biochemistries in stone formers with multiple sclerosis (MS) against stone formers without MS and to examine the association between mobility, methods of bladder emptying, and stone formation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, we identified patients diagnosed with MS and kidney stone disease who were seen at our institution between 2001 and 2016. For the first part of the study, up to two controls (stone formers without a history of MS) were identified for each case and matched on age, body mass index, and s

Crystalline nephropathies are a unique form of kidney disease characterized by the histologic finding of intrarenal crystal deposition. The intrinsic nature of some molecules and ions combined with a favorable tubular fluid physiology leads to crystal precipitation and deposition within the tubular lumens. Crystal deposition promotes kidney injury through tubular obstruction and both direct and indirect cytotoxicities. Further kidney injury develops from inflammation triggered by these crystals. From a clinical standpoint, the crystalline nephropathies are associated with abnormal urinalysis a

PURPOSE: We have evaluated the clinical, radiological and metabolic features of infantile urolithiasis (UL).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have reviewed the medical records of 93 children who were diagnosed as having UL before 1 year of age. We recorded patient demographics, the age at diagnosis, presenting symptoms, family history, the localizations and dimensions of stones, urinary metabolic examinations, as well as physical, laboratory, and radiologic findings. Our secondary objective was to compare some features of this group with those of older children with UL followed-up in the same clinic

Combined liver-kidney transplantations (CLKT) and kidney after liver transplantations (KALT) are established treatments for patients with end-stage hepatic and renal disease and the number of transplantations has continuously increased over the past few years. The most frequent indications for CLKT in adults are polycystic kidney disease with severe liver involvement and liver cirrhosis of different origins with concomitant chronic kidney failure due to chronic glomerulonephritis or diabetic nephropathy. In children, CLKT is most frequently required due to primary oxalosis type I. At present t

Patients with some hereditary nephropathies-including autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), Fabry disease and Alport syndrome-can progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and are candidates for kidney transplantation. When considering whether a potential living donor is appropriate for a particular patient, clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of adverse outcomes for the donor and the recipient. Renal transplantation from a living related donor is not contraindicated in most nephropathies that have an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance (for example, autosomal

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the latest findings of congenital and acquired diseases related to stone formation and help understanding the multitude of cofactors related to urolithiasis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Urolithiasis is related to a broad spectrum of congenital and acquired diseases and its management varies according to the stone type, underlying disease or recurrence rate, but it also changes according to recent findings and developments. As prevalence of urolithiasis is constantly increasing, identification of high-risk stone formers and early treatment is essential. Therefore, genetic
