Building a DNA barcode library of Alaska's non-marine arthropods.

Climate change may result in ecological futures with novel species assemblages, trophic mismatch, and mass extinction. Alaska has a limited taxonomic workforce to address these changes. We are building a DNA barcode library to facilitate a metabarcoding approach to monitoring non-marine arthropods. Working with the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding, we obtained DNA barcodes from recently collected and authoritatively identified specimens in the University of Alaska Museum (UAM) Insect Collection and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge collection. We submitted tissues from 4776 specimens, of whi

Unraveling a 70-year-old taxonomic puzzle: redefining the genus ikedosoma (annelida: echiura) on the basis of morphological and molecular analyses.

After a long-standing taxonomic confusion, the echiurid genus Ikedosoma Bock, 1942 , endemic to Japan and surroundings, is redefined on the basis of morphological and molecular analyses of many new Japanese materials and some museum specimens. The re-examination of a syntype of I. elegans ( Ikeda, 1904 ), the type species of the genus, first revealed that its oblique muscle layer is continuous throughout and never fasciculate between longitudinal muscle bands, unlike those described in the definitions that have prevailed for ca. 70 years, making this genus indistinguishable from Listriolobus S

Vestigial tooth anatomy and tusk nomenclature for monodon monoceros.

Narwhal tusks, although well described and characterized within publications, are clouded by contradictory references, which refer to them as both incisors and canines. Vestigial teeth are briefly mentioned in the scientific literature with limited descriptions and no image renderings. This study first examines narwhal maxillary osteoanatomy to determine whether the erupted tusks are best described as incisiform or caniniform teeth. The study also offers evidence to support the evolutionary obsolescence of the vestigial teeth through anatomic, morphologic, and histologic descriptions. Examinat

MRT letter: Human bloodstains on antique aboriginal weapons: a guiding low-vacuum SEM study of erythrocytes in experimental samples on ethnographically documented biological raw materials.

The aboriginal use of reed and bone as raw materials for knives and daggers, respectively, has been well-documented ethnographically in some geographical areas of Melanesia. Because of the significant role that these weapons played in inter- and intra-ethnic aggression, they can potentially have retained smears from the contact with human blood. To carry out a guiding low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of specific interest to ethnography, the outsides of a fragment of stalk of giant cane (Arundo donax) and tibial diaphysis of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) were smeared with perip

Genetic drift. The ancient Egyptian dwarfs of the pyramids: the high official and the female worker.

The existence of dwarfism is amply documented in ancient Egypt due to the rich biological and artistic legacies. In previous articles published in this journal, I discussed the roles of people with skeletal dysplasia in ancient Egyptian civilization. In this article I, along with my Egyptian and American colleagues, describe two skeletons of dwarfs that date to 2700-2184 BCE and were unearthed from a funerary complex near the Great Pyramids in Giza. The first skeleton belongs to a high official, Per-ni-ankh-w, who died between 45 and 50 years of age. His statue is on display in the Egyptian Mu

Brief communication: The London atlas of human tooth development and eruption.

The aim of this study was to develop a comprehensive evidence-based atlas to estimate age using both tooth development and alveolar eruption for human individuals between 28 weeks in utero and 23 years. This was a cross-sectional, retrospective study of archived material with the sample aged 2 years and older having a uniform age and sex distribution. Developing teeth from 72 prenatal and 104 postnatal skeletal remains of known age-at-death were examined from collections held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Natural History Museum, London, UK (M 91, F 72, unknown sex 13). Human evolution in Siberia: from frozen bodies to ancient DNA.

BACKGROUND: The Yakuts contrast strikingly with other populations from Siberia due to their cattle- and horse-breeding economy as well as their Turkic language. On the basis of ethnological and linguistic criteria as well as population genetic studies, it has been assumed that they originated from South Siberian populations. However, many questions regarding the origins of this intriguing population still need to be clarified (e.g. the precise origin of paternal lineages and the admixture rate with indigenous populations). This study attempts to better understand the origins of the Yakuts by p

Dental development and life history in living African and Asian apes.

Life-history inference is an important aim of paleoprimatology, but life histories cannot be discerned directly from the fossil record. Among extant primates, the timing of many life-history attributes is correlated with the age at emergence of the first permanent molar (M1), which can therefore serve as a means to directly compare the life histories of fossil and extant species. To date, M1 emergence ages exist for only a small fraction of extant primate species and consist primarily of data from captive individuals, which may show accelerated dental eruption compared with free-living individ

Lumbar facet orientation in spondylolysis: a skeletal study.

STUDY DESIGN: Orientation of the lumbar articular facets at the L1-L5 level was measured and analyzed. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relationship between lumbar facet orientation and isthmic spondylolysis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Whereas many studies have explored the relationship between facet orientation in the transverse plane and various spinal pathologies, there is insufficient data regarding this relationship and isthmic spondylolysis. METHODS: A 3-dimensional digitizer was used to measure the transverse orientation of the lumbar facet joints at the L1-L5 level in 115 male indivi

Lumbar facet anatomy changes in spondylolysis: a comparative skeletal study.

UNLABELLED: Opinions differ as to the exact mechanism responsible for spondylolysis (SP) and whether individuals with specific morphological characteristics of the lumbar vertebral neural arch are predisposed to SP. The aim of our study was to reveal the association between SP and the architecture of lumbar articular facets and the inter-facet region. METHODS: Using a Microscribe three-dimensional apparatus (Immersion Co., San Jose, CA, USA), length, width and depth of all articular facets and all inter-facet distances in the lumbar spine (L1-L5) were measured. From the Hamann-Todd Human Oste

Towards control of schistosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa.

Approximately 80% of the 200 million people infected with schistosomiasis inhabit sub-Saharan Africa, and the annual mortality is estimated to be 280,000. Praziquantel is the drug of choice in the treatment of schistosomiasis and pregnant women may now be treated. It was agreed at the World Health Assembly in 2001 that at least 75% of school-aged children in high burden areas should be treated for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections by 2010 to reduce morbidity. A grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative, Imperial College of

Asymmetrical spondylolysis.

The objective of this study was to examine examples of spondylolysis in which the pattern of separation was clearly asymmetrical, in order to learn more about the process of bone separation that produces this condition. Although the primary focus was on unilateral complete separation, examples of asymmetry represented by incomplete separation and by complete bilateral separation where the separation sites are in different locations on the two sides were included. Two collections were used, one consisting of Canadian Inuit skeletons curated at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the other

Probable evidence of scurvy in subadults from archeological sites in Peru.

Subadult scurvy is not well documented in archeological human remains despite the existence of many biomedical references indicating that bone changes do occur in some cases and, because of this, should be observable in human burials. There are several potential reasons for this gap in our knowledge of scurvy. Not all children who suffered from scurvy died of the disease or from other causes when they had scurvy. Scurvy may not leave characteristic bone changes in every case of the disease. Some of the pathological conditions associated with scurvy have been known for many years, but these fea

Cognitive Activity From Early to Late Life and the Risk of AD Dementia: A Life Course Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Participation in late-life cognitive activities has been associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline and reduced risk of dementia; however, whether this association is independent of earlier experiences is unclear. We examined the association of cognitive activities during early life, midlife, and late life with the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. METHODS: This study used data from the Chicago Health and Aging Project, a longitudinal population-based study from 1993 to 2012. Cognitive activity in early life, i.e., during childhood, was measured by

Effect of electron beam irradiation on forensic evidence. 2. Analysis of writing inks on porous surfaces.

The effect of electron beam irradiation on a series of different writing inks is described. As the anthrax-tainted letters were discovered in October 2001, the U.S. government began to experiment with the use of the electron beam irradiation process for destroying such biological agents. Plans initially considered a large-scale countrywide use of this technology. However, over time the scope of this plan as well as the radiation dosage were reduced, especially when some adverse consequences to mailed items subjected to this process were observed. Little data existed at the time to characterize

Mosaic postcranial evolution and aquatic adaptation in the Miocene otter Tyrrhenolutra: Insights from morpho-functional analysis.

Otters are characterized by great adaptability, displaying a wide geographic distribution and being a common presence in all continents except for areas such as Australia and some remote islands. Otters inhabit a wide variety of environments, ranging from terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to the exclusively aquatic habitat of the sea otter (Enhydra lutris). For this reason, otters provide interesting insights on the evolution of adaptations to aquatic lifestyle in living mammals. The taxonomic identification of the material housed at the Naturhistorisches Museum of Basel allowed us to iden

Divergent nectar-feeding mechanisms evidenced by intralingual suction in sunbirds.

Nectarivory has independently evolved many times among birds, yet little is known about the diversity of feeding mechanisms that enable specialized taxa to efficiently collect this energy-rich resource. Multiple avian groups have converged on evolving elongated bills and tube-like tongues adapted for nectar extraction. Old World sunbirds (family Nectariniidae) stand out as having the greatest degree of convergence in bill and tongue morphology with the well-studied and highly specialized New World hummingbirds (family Trochilidae), which fill their tongues via fluid trapping and expansive fill

Deep-water lymnaeid gastropods (Hygrophila) of Lake Pannon (Late Miocene, Central Europe): taxonomy and biostratigraphic significance.

In the present study, a distinctive lineage of lymnaeid gastropods from the deep-water deposits of the Late Miocene Lake Pannon (Central Europe) is revised. The examined material includes specimens from museum collections as well as newly collected fossils from different parts of the Pannonian Basin System. During the past 150 years, at least 30 deep-water lymnaeid species assigned to ten genera have been described from the Lake Pannon deposits; however, our examination of more than 700 specimens shows that these records represent only 11 species belonging to five genera. Lectotypes are design
