Low-level laser-aided orthodontic treatment of periodontally compromised patients: a randomised controlled trial.

Low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) shows effects in orthodontic pain relief and periodontal inflammation control. The aim of this article is to investigate the analgesic and inflammation-modulatory effects of low-level laser irradiation among orthodontic patients with compromised periodontium. A randomised controlled trial with split-mouth design was conducted in 27 adults with treated and controlled chronic periodontitis over 6 months. One side of the dental arch underwent repeated treatment under a 940-nm diode laser (EZlase; Biolase Technology Inc.) with a beam size of 2.8 cm2 for 60 second

Semi-Automated Planimetric Quantification of Dental Plaque Using an Intraoral Fluorescence Camera.

Dental plaque accumulation is quantified using clinical indices or, otherwise, the planimetric plaque index (PPI), which measures the relative area of a tooth that is covered by plaque deposits. Compared to clinical indices, the PPI has a higher discriminatory power, but traditional planimetry is a time-consuming analysis, as the plaque-covered and clean tooth areas have to be determined manually for each image using image-processing software. Here, we present a method for the semi-automated planimetric quantification of dental plaque, which allows for the rapid processing of up to 1,000 image

Effect of the different debonding strength of metal and ceramic brackets on the degree of enamel microcrack healing.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine shear debonding strength of metal and ceramic brackets, and the degree of enamel crack healing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Extracted human maxillary premolars were flattened on the buccal surface, and randomly separated into five groups (n = 15). In control groups (groups 1 and 2), metal and ceramic brackets were bonded on flat polished enamel, while in experimental groups (groups 3 and 4), metal and ceramic brackets were bonded on the surface with boundary where corner cracks were created. Additionally, fifteen specimens (group 5) were also prepared for an

The effects of orthodontic movement on a subepithelial connective tissue graft in the treatment of gingival recession.

AIM: The purpose of this article is to report on the five-year follow-up of a case involving treatment of gingival recession with a subepithelial connective tissue graft prior to orthodontic tooth movement. BACKGROUND: Gingival recession has a global prevalence that varies from 3 to 100 percent depending on the population studied and the method of analysis. In addition, the frequency of recession seems to be positively correlated with age. Planned orthodontic tooth movement is not necessarily an etiological factor for gingival recession, so long as it does not move the tooth out of its alveol

Effect of Crown Angulation of Maxillary Incisor on Effective Arch Perimeter.

INTRODUCTION: It has been postulated that crown angulation and inclination has potential space implication within the arch. With the insight of space implication of the axial relations of teeth, cases of genuine tooth size discrepancies can be dealt with improved stability. AIM: This in vitro study was designed to investigate and quantify the influence of angulation and inclination of maxillary incisors on the effective arch perimeter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acrylic teeth were arranged over typhodont frame with spaced maxillary anterior segment. Known value of tip and torque in increments we

Long-term changes in pharyngeal airway morphology after mandibular setback surgery.

Long-term changes in pharyngeal airway morphology were evaluated after mandibular setback surgery in 10 women who were diagnosed as having skeletal mandibular prognathism and underwent mandibular setback surgery by bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and orthodontic multi-bracket treatment. The subjects were assessed before treatment (T1), 3-6 months after SSRO (T2), and 2 or more years after SSRO (T3). From T1 to T2, the pharyngeal airway constricted significantly. On the other hand, from T2 to T3, the lower facial morphology showed no significant changes. The pharyngeal airway mo

Maxillary anterior en masse retraction using different antero-posterior position of mini screw: a 3D finite element study.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, mini screws are used in orthodontic tooth movement to obtain maximum or absolute anchorage. They have gained popularity among orthodontists for en masse retraction of anterior teeth after first premolar extraction in maximum anchorage cases. The purpose of this study was to determine the type of anterior tooth movement during the time when force was applied from different mini screw placements to the anterior power arm with various heights. METHODS: A finite element method was used for modeling maxillary teeth and bone structure. Brackets, wire, and hooks were also desig
