A perspective from magnetic resonance imaging findings of the inner ear: Relationships among cerebrospinal, ocular and inner ear fluids.

Visualization of endolymphatic hydrops has been performed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after intratympanic or intravenous gadolinium (Gd) injection. Our recent findings indicate that just as the prevalence of asymptomatic glaucoma is greater than that of symptomatic glaucoma, there are also many cases of asymptomatic endolymphatic hydrops. It is assumed that the asymptomatic endolymphatic hydrops that precedes Ménière's disease is found more frequently using MRI than with other techniques. Gd in the inner ear moves into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via the internal auditory meatus.

Effect of cochlear implant electrode insertion on middle-ear function as measured by intra-operative laser Doppler vibrometry.

HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of cochlear implant electrode insertion on middle-ear low frequency function in humans. BACKGROUND: Preservation of residual low frequency hearing with addition of electrical speech processing can improve the speech perception abilities and hearing in noise of cochlear implant users. Preservation of low frequency hearing requires an intact middle-ear conductive mechanism in addition to intact inner-ear mechanisms. Little is known about the effect of a cochlear implant electrode on middle-ear function. METHODS: Stapes displacemen

Gastric type H+,K+-ATPase in the cochlear lateral wall is critically involved in formation of the endocochlear potential.

Cochlear endolymph has a highly positive potential of approximately +80 mV known as the endocochlear potential (EP). The EP is essential for hearing and is maintained by K(+) circulation from perilymph to endolymph through the cochlear lateral wall. Various K(+) transport apparatuses such as the Na(+),K(+)-ATPase, the Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) cotransporter, and the K(+) channels Kir4.1 and KCNQ1/KCNE1 are expressed in the lateral wall and are known to play indispensable roles in cochlear K(+) circulation. The gastric type of the H(+),K(+)-ATPase was also shown to be expressed in the cochlear lateral

Sensorineural and conductive hearing loss associated with lateral semicircular canal malformation.

OBJECTIVE: Lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) malformation is one of the most common radiological inner ear malformations. Traditionally, inner ear malformations are thought to be associated with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Recent experience with patients with LSCC malformation suggested that LSCC malformation may be associated with both SNHL and conductive hearing loss (CHL). The auditory phenotype associated with LSCC malformation is not well delineated. The objective of this study is to define the nature of the hearing loss associated with LSCC malformation. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospecti

High-resolution T2-weighted MR imaging of the inner ear using a long echo-train-length 3D fast spin-echo sequence.

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of a long echo-train-length 3D fast spin-echo (3D-FSE) sequence in visualizing the inner ear structures. Ten normal ears and 50 patient ears were imaged on a 1.5T MR unit using a head coil. Axial high-resolution T2-weighted images of the inner ear and the internal auditory canal (IAC) were obtained in 15 min. In normal ears the reliability of the visualization for the inner ear structures was evaluated on original images and the targeted maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of the labyrinth. In ten normal ears, 3D surface display (3D) imag

Expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 during inner ear inflammation.

This study was designed to investigate the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on the spiral modiolar vein (SMV) with its collecting venules (CVs) and the venules of the endolymphatic sac during inner ear inflammation. These data will further elucidate the role of adhesion molecules in extravasation of inflammatory cells from blood vessels during an inner ear immune response. Labyrinthitis was induced in rats by inoculation of keyhole limpet hemocyanin into the scala tympani of animals who had been systemically sensitized to it. Expression of ICAM-1 was examined with a mou

[Experimental viral labyrinthitis--an immunohistochemical investigation of the cochlear lesion].

Pathogenesis of viral labyrinthitis is still poorly understood despite the dimension of clinical problem. This study was undertaken in order to elucidate the pathogenesis of viral labyrinthitis by the immunohistochemical investigations of infected cochleas. HVJ (Sendai virus) and mumps virus have been used to create an animal model of viral labyrinthitis. The cochleas of adult guinea pigs with intralabyrinthine inoculation of virus through the round window membrane and with intravascular injection of virus were investigated by histopathological and immunohistochemical techniques (immunofluores

Systematic review of magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosis of Meniere disease.

The diagnostic criteria for Meniere Disease (MD) are clinical and include two categories: definite MD and probable MD, based on clinical examination and without the necessity of advanced vestibular or audiological testing. The condition is a heterogeneous disorder and it is associated with endolymphatic hydrops (EH), an accumulation of endolymph in the inner ear that causes damage to the ganglion cells. Patients with suspected EH can be examined by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), offering new insights into these inner ear disorders. Results of imaging studies using the hydrops protocols show

A pressure-reversible cellular mechanism of general anesthetics capable of altering a possible mechanism for consciousness.

Different anesthetics are known to modulate different types of membrane-bound receptors. Their common mechanism of action is expected to alter the mechanism for consciousness. Consciousness is hypothesized as the integral of all the units of internal sensations induced by reactivation of inter-postsynaptic membrane functional LINKs during mechanisms that lead to oscillating potentials. The thermodynamics of the spontaneous lateral curvature of lipid membranes induced by lipophilic anesthetics can lead to the formation of non-specific inter-postsynaptic membrane functional LINKs by different me

D-JNKI-1 treatment prevents the progression of hearing loss in a model of cochlear implantation trauma.

HYPOTHESES: 1) Hearing loss caused by electrode insertion trauma has both acute and delayed components; and 2) the delayed component of trauma-initiated hearing loss can be prevented by a direct delivery of a peptide inhibitor of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase cell death signal cascade, that is, D-JNKI-1, immediately after the electrode insertion within the cochlea. BACKGROUND: Acute trauma to the macroscopic elements of the cochlea from electrode insertion is well known. The impact of trauma-induced oxidative stress within injured cochlear tissues and the efficacy of drugs (e.g., D-JNKI-1) to p

Expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, alpha4-integrin and L-selectin during inner ear immunity reaction.

The expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), alpha4-integrin and L-selectin was dynamically observed using an immunohistochemical approach during labyrinthitis induced by inoculation of keyhole limpet hemocyanin into the scala tympani of animals that had been systemically sensitized to it. At the same time, we used ELISA to monitor interleukin-1(IL-1) in the peripheral blood of these animals. The expression of alpha4-integrin and L-selectin on the surface of leukocytes in peripheral blood was examined by flow cytometry. VCAM-1 was found on the endothelial surface of the spiral

Neonatal deafening alters nonpyramidal dendrite orientation in auditory cortex: a computer microscope study in the rabbit.

In order to examine the influence of afferent input on nonpyramidal dendrite development in the auditory cortex, unilateral deafening was carried out in neonatal rabbits at birth, approximately 6 days prior to the onset of hearing. Deafening was produced by surgical removal of the incus and stapes ossicles, aspiration of the cochlear perilymph, and kanamycin injection into the oval window. At 60 days of age, acoustic stimulation of the deafened ear was unable to evoke auditory brainstem responses. The brains of experimental and littermate control rabbits were processed according to the Golgi-C

[Studies of sound condition in the reconstructed middle ear with a hydrophone. Initial results].

The acoustic result following reconstruction of the middle ear is often disappointing and unpredictable. Apart from biologic factors, this is due to insufficient knowledge of the mechanism of sound transmission through the operated middle ear. Therefore, temporal bone experiments with simulated middle ear operations were set up to investigate the sound transmission following different prosthesis' designs, materials, etc. We developed a tiny hydrophone which has a frequency range from 100 Hz to 10 kHz in order to measure the sound pressure in the cochlear fluid. By comparing the sound pressure

Novel strategy for treatment of inner ears using a biodegradable gel.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a biodegradable hydrogel as a drug-delivery medium for the inner ear. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was chosen as the agent to be administered. METHOD: First, we used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure BDNF concentrations in the cochlear fluid after placing a hydrogel containing this agent onto the round-window membrane of the ear. Second, the functional and histologic protection of the auditory primary neurons (spiral ganglion neurons [SGNs]) by BDNF applied through the hydrogel was examined using an anima
