Tone language experience-dependent advantage in pitch representation in brainstem and auditory cortex is maintained under reverberation.

Long-term language and music experience enhances neural representation of temporal attributes of pitch in the brainstem and auditory cortex in favorable listening conditions. Herein we examine whether brainstem and cortical pitch mechanisms-shaped by long-term language experience-maintain this advantage in the presence of reverberation-induced degradation in pitch representation. Brainstem frequency following responses (FFR) and cortical pitch responses (CPR) were recorded concurrently from Chinese and English-speaking natives, using a Mandarin word exhibiting a high rising pitch (/yi2/). Age effects in discrimination of intervals within rhythmic tone sequences.

This study measured listener sensitivity to increments of a target inter-onset interval (IOI) embedded within tone sequences that featured different rhythmic patterns. The sequences consisted of six 50-ms 1000-Hz tone bursts separated by silent intervals that were adjusted to create different timing patterns. Control sequences were isochronous, with all tonal IOIs fixed at either 200 or 400 ms, while other patterns featured combinations of the two IOIs arranged to create different sequential tonal groupings. Duration difference limens in milliseconds for increments of a single sequence IOI wer

Effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on cochlear tuning measured using stimulus frequency and distortion product OAEs.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether a change in cochlear tuning, measured using OAEs, could be detected due to contralateral activation of the efferent system using broadband noise. DESIGN: Cochlear tuning measures based on SFOAE phase gradients and SFOAE-2TS 'Q' were used to test this hypothesis. SFOAE magnitude and phase gradient were measured using a pure-tone sweep from 1248 to 2496 Hz at 50 dB SPL. 2TS curves of SFOAE were recorded with a suppressor frequency swept from 1120 to 2080 Hz at 50 dB SPL. DPOAE f2-sweep phase gradient was also obtained to allow comparisons with the literature. All thr

Interactions in the cochlea between air conduction and osseous and non-osseous bone conduction stimulation.

Since air-conducted (AC) and clinical (mastoid) bone-conducted (BC) sounds interact in the cochlea (e.g. pitch, cancellation, masking, beats), it has been thought that both AC and BC stimulations lead to a mechanical wave in the cochlea. However, there are also "non-osseous" forms of BC, i.e. auditory sensation produced when the clinical bone vibrator is applied to "non-osseous" soft tissue sites. In the present study, such "non-osseous" sites were identified (e.g. eye, cheek, neck) and they interacted with AC and osseous BC (pitch matching, beats, masking), indicating that all of these forms

Prospective study of tympanic membrane retraction, hearing loss, and multifrequency tympanometry.

Tympanic membrane retraction is a significant sequela of OME and has been linked clinically to atelectasis, ossicular erosion, and cholesteatoma. We investigated important factors for prediction of tympanic membrane retraction in a prospective study of 112 children. After 4 to 6 years of follow-up, 12% of ears had pars tensa retraction without atrophy, and 28% had various degrees of retraction with atrophy. Mild pars flaccida retraction was present in 23%, and severe pars flaccida retraction was present in 12%. Retraction severity was related to hearing level and multifrequency tympanometry. T

Playing and listening to tailor-made notched music: cortical plasticity induced by unimodal and multimodal training in tinnitus patients.

BACKGROUND. The generation and maintenance of tinnitus are assumed to be based on maladaptive functional cortical reorganization. Listening to modified music, which contains no energy in the range of the individual tinnitus frequency, can inhibit the corresponding neuronal activity in the auditory cortex. Music making has been shown to be a powerful stimulator for brain plasticity, inducing changes in multiple sensory systems. Using magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and behavioral measurements we evaluated the cortical plasticity effects of two months of (a) active listening to (unisensory) versus

Effects of age and hearing loss on the relationship between discrimination of stochastic frequency modulation and speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency modulation (FM) of speech can convey linguistic information and also enhance speech-stream coherence and segmentation. The purpose of the present study was to use a clinically oriented approach to examine the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to discriminate between stochastic patterns of low-rate FM and determine whether difficulties in speech perception experienced by older listeners relate to a deficit in this ability. DESIGN: Data were collected from 18 normal-hearing young adults, and 18 participants who were at least 60 years old, nine of whom had n

Assessing tinnitus and prospective tinnitus therapeutics using a psychophysical animal model.

Subjective tinnitus is a common and often debilitating disorder that is difficult to study because it is a perceptual state without an objective stimulus correlate. Studying tinnitus in humans is further complicated by the heterogeneity of tinnitus quality, severity, and associated hearing loss. As a consequence, the pathophysiology of tinnitus is poorly understood and treatments are often unsuccessful. In the present study, an animal psychophysical model was developed to reflect several features of tinnitus observed in humans. Chronic tinnitus was induced in rats by a single intense unilatera

Validating the Gap-Startle Paradigm for Tinnitus Detection: A Machine Learning Approach in CBA/CaJ Mice.

UNLABELLED: Tinnitus is one of the most common hearing disorders affecting one-third of Americans and is defined as the buzzing or ringing sound one perceives in one or both ears in the absence of an acoustic stimulus. One objective method for tinnitus screening in rodents is gap prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (GPIAS), a reduction in the abrupt motor response elicited by an intense auditory stimulus following a silent gap in noise. Reduced inhibition by gaps embedded in narrow-band noise is hypothesized to reflect the primary tinnitus pitch, as the tinnitus "fills-in" the g

Colored tones of emotions: the relationship between music, emotions and color.

INTRODUCTION: Music influences not only emotions but also cross-modal perception, including color. Previous studies have demonstrated that major keys and faster tempi are often associated with bright hues and positive affect, whereas minor keys and slower tempi tend to evoke darker shades and negatively valenced emotional states. However, how tempo and tonality jointly relate to emotional and chromatic responses has rarely been systematically examined, and the role of emotion in linking musical features to color choices remains underexplored. METHODS: In this study, 80 participants with no fo

Evaluation of Functional Impacts of Vision Impairment: Progress, Challenges and Future Directions.

Vision impairment has profound consequences for everyday functioning and quality of life. This review summarises recent evidence on the impact of vision impairment in three functional domains: mobility and falls risk, driving, and the interaction between vision impairment and hearing. Individuals with vision impairment often adopt more cautious gait and visual search behaviours; however, they remain less stable and at increased falls risk, dependent on the type and severity of vision impairment. Wearable technologies enable continuous measurement of movement in naturalistic settings. Future re

Rediscovery of a seventh sense: humans produce, perceive, and process ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: We present novel evidence that humans are capable of producing, perceiving, and cortically processing ultrasound (US), extending the recognized limits of human auditory function. This previously unacknowledged sensory ability was identified in an expert practitioner of the traditional Chinese health exercise "The Six Healing Sounds. METHODS AND RESULTS: High-resolution recordings demonstrated deliberate vocal emissions reaching up to 35 kHz, with nearly one third of the acoustic energy residing in the ultrasonic range. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) revealed a distinct cortical re

Comparison of Client-Led Asynchronous and Clinician-Led Synchronous Online Methods for Evaluation of Subjective Vocal Measures in Teachers: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has transformed face to face teaching in classrooms to online and hybrid modes. Increased vocal intensity/ pitch to call attention of students and transact in the online class, inappropriate posture (head, neck & upper trunk) while using the laptop and other online tools cause vocal loading leading to voice related concerns in teachers. Tele voice assessment is a feasible alternative means to seek professional help in the current situation and possibly in the future too. Treatment of Gravitational Pulling Sensation in Patients With Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS): A Model-Based Approach.

Perception of the spatial vertical is important for maintaining and stabilizing vertical posture during body motion. The velocity storage pathway of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), which integrates vestibular, optokinetic, and proprioception in the vestibular nuclei vestibular-only (VO) neurons, has spatio-temporal properties that are defined by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of its system matrix. The yaw, pitch and roll eigenvectors are normally aligned with the spatial vertical and corresponding head axes. Misalignment of the roll eigenvector with the head axes was hypothesized to be an importa

Origami-Inspired Structure with Pneumatic-Induced Variable Stiffness for Multi-DOF Force-Sensing.

With the emerging need for human-machine interactions, multi-modal sensory interaction is gradually pursued rather than satisfying common perception forms (visual or auditory), so developing flexible, adaptive, and stiffness-variable force-sensing devices is the key to further promoting human-machine fusion. However, current sensor sensitivity is fixed and nonadjustable after fabrication, limiting further development. To solve this problem, we propose an origami-inspired structure to achieve multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs) motions with variable stiffness for force-sensing, which combines th

Design and Preliminary Evaluation of Electrolarynx With F0 Control Based on Capacitive Touch Technology.

An electrolarynx (EL) is one of the most popular voice rehabilitation technologies used after laryngectomy. However, most ELs generate monotonic EL speech, which has been shown to create a particular deficit in speech intelligibility, especially for Chinese Mandarin (Mandarin). Mandarin is a tonal language that makes lexical distinctions using variations in tone. Our purpose is to design an EL that can produce the four Mandarin tones, and to evaluate its performance. We designed a fundamental frequency (F0) control method for Mandarin EL speech and manufactured a touch-controlled electrolarynx

Enhancing inhibition-induced plasticity in tinnitus--spectral energy contrasts in tailor-made notched music matter.

Chronic tinnitus seems to be caused by reduced inhibition among frequency selective neurons in the auditory cortex. One possibility to reduce tinnitus perception is to induce inhibition onto over-activated neurons representing the tinnitus frequency via tailor-made notched music (TMNM). Since lateral inhibition is modifiable by spectral energy contrasts, the question arises if the effects of inhibition-induced plasticity can be enhanced by introducing increased spectral energy contrasts (ISEC) in TMNM. Eighteen participants suffering from chronic tonal tinnitus, pseudo randomly assigned to eit

The impact of hearing loss on tone discrimination: An fMRI study.

Hearing deprivation induces structural and functional reorganization in the brain, which compromises an individual's language processing capacity. As a tonal language, Mandarin Chinese requires fine-grained auditory processing for lexical tone discrimination. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms through which hearing loss influences this process remain poorly understood. This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine behavioral performance and neural activation patterns during Mandarin tone discrimination tasks in individuals with early-onset deafness. Participants

[Laser vibrometry. A middle ear and cochlear analyzer for noninvasive studies of middle and inner ear function disorders].

A complete battery of audiometric methods is required for the differential diagnosis of different hearing disabilities (including puretone audiometry, impedance, stapes reflex, speech audiometry, brainstam evoked response audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, etc.). In many cases, a comprehensive diagnosis is not possible. Here we describe a new technique based on a laser-Doppler vibrometer that has the potential for non-invasive diagnosis not only middle ear disease but also cochlear pathologies. Disturbance of cochlear function can be ascertained because the input impedance of the cochlea acts
