In this retrospective study, we report the epidemiological characteristics of all poisoning deaths in Epirus, Greece, from 1998 to 2010; we present the toxicological findings and the statistical evaluation of the results. This is the first detailed scientific report on all the officially certified poisoning deaths concerning part of the Greek population. A total of 126 poisoning fatalities were recorded, 67 of them being mono-intoxications (53.2%). A 28-year-old man presented with painful progressive necrosis of the skin of his left leg which was associated with general toxicity and a high fever. A working diagnosis of necrotizing arachnidism was made, but no improvement followed two weeks of therapy with analgesics, antibiotics and antihistamines. His symptoms responded rapidly to prednisolone therapy, and a diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum was confirmed by biopsy. This subsequently proved to be associated with early acute myelomonocytic leukaemia.

Twenty-five patients with mucormycosis were seen at two university-affiliated hospitals from 1979 to 1993. These cases included 10 cutaneous, 9 rhinocerebral, and 3 disseminated infections, as well as one case each of pulmonary, renal, and peritoneal dialysis catheter-related infection. Eleven of the patients were diabetic and seven had ketoacidosis, including four who became acidotic after admission to the hospital.
