In a preliminary study, two of four rabbits infected with human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) demonstrated prolonged primary chancres following superinfection with Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis. Two rabbits inoculated with 1 x 10(7) HTLV-I-infected human MT-2 cells and two with infected rabbit cells from a line established in this laboratory (RLT-P), developed latent HTLV-I infection as detected by seroconversion 10 weeks after infection and by detection of HTLV-I sequences in the DNA of peripheral blood lymphocytes after amplification by polymerase chair reaction

A 16-year-old young man presented with intensely itchy erythematous dermatitis on the body for 1 week and vesicular lesions on the palms and soles for 4 to 5 days. Lesions on the palms and soles were accompanied by severe burning and itching. The patient gave a history of sore throat and fever, 1 week prior to the onset of lesions. A general physical examination was normal, and cutaneous examination revealed multiple, well-defined erythematous scaly plaques with collaret scaling on the trunk and extremities (Figure 1). Vesicular lesions were seen on the palms and soles (Figure 2). The differen

Joseph Babinski (1857-1932), a French neurologist of Polish origin, was a physician of the Paris hospitals and member of the Academy of Medicine. Two main periods must be distinguished in his scientific activity. Early in his career, Babinski, working as an anatomo-pathologist and his tologist under the direction of Victor Cornil, Alfred Vulpian and Louis Ranvier, reported on several observations of general pathology and neuropathology. After his chief residency under Charcot (from 1885 to 1887), Babinski abandoned his previous interests and became increasingly involved with hysteria. He thus

The clinical features of CCC are stereotyped. Twenty-two cases have been found in the literature. Skin lesions are present at birth (12/22) or within the first twelve hours of life (7/22) and sometimes later, up to the sixth day of life. Maculopapular lesions are the first to appear, followed by the more typical vesiculopustular rash and secondary desquamation. Involvement of the upper half of the body is frequent. Interestingly, palm and sole pustules are almost constant. Oral, periungueal and conjunctival lesions are rare. In most cases, healing occurs within ten days of topical treatment us

The presentation of a scaly papule or plaque on the glans penis should suggest more wide-spread papulosquamous disease. Careful examination of the remaining body surface, including the oral mucosa and nails, in almost all cases will yield clues to the correct diagnosis. Papulosquamous disease which may present as a penile lesion include psoriasis, Reiter syndrome, lichen planus, lichen nitidus, seborrheic dermatitis, secondary syphilis, fixed drug eruption, erythroplasia of Queyrat, plasma cell balanitis of Zoon, bowenoid papulosis, and discoid and lichenoid chronic dermatosis of Sulzberger an

Leprosy is a contagious and chronic systemic granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae (Hansen s bacillus). It is transmitted from person to person and has a long incubation period (between two and six years). The disease presents polar clinical forms (the multibacillary lepromatous leprosy and the paucibacillary tuberculoid leprosy), as well as other intermediate forms with hybrid characteristics. Oral manifestations usually appear in lepromatous leprosy and occur in 20-60% of cases. They may take the form of multiple nodules (lepromas) that progress to necrosis and ulceration. The

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochetal bacterium Treponema pallidum that has been of public health concern for centuries. In the United States, it is currently a reportable disease and one which is recently generating increasing case numbers especially in at risk populations of immune deficiency and men who have sex with men. The present series examines biopsies from 13 patients collected over a 12-year period from a general hospital network in north suburban Cook County, Illinois. There were 13 patients (11 male: 2 female) with varied presentations, including pri

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis (CS) depends on the placental transmission of Treponema pallidum (TP) spirochetes from an infected mother to fetus during pregnancy. It shows a wide clinical variability with cutaneous and visceral manifestations, including stillbirths, neonatal death, and asymptomatic cases. Preterm infants with CS may have more severe features of disease than the term ones, due to the combined pathogenic effect of both CS and prematurity.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a female preterm (32+6 weeks of gestation) newborn showing most of the typical CS manifestations, in additi

The ongoing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection epidemic coupled with more efficacious and available treatments has led to a larger number of patients living with HIV or AIDS. As a result, skin manifestations related to HIV/AIDS or its therapy have become increasingly more common and are reported to occur in as many as 95% of patients. Herein, we review the most common HIV/AIDS related cutaneous pathologies and classify them into inflammatory, HAART-associated, neoplastic, and infectious manifestations. Cutaneous manifestations should be promptly recognized and treated by physicians a

Infective endocarditis in the adult is life-threatening. Bacterial endocarditis is an inner infection lining the heart muscle (endocardium). The scientific study of the causes of diseases is known as etiology. The agents that cause disease fall into five groups: bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, and helminths (worms). Risk factors are past heart defects, damaged or abnormal heart valves, new valves after surgery, chronic hemodialysis, and immunosuppressed state (chemotherapy, HIV, etc.). Infective endocarditis is categorized into two clinical forms: bacterial acute and subacute endocarditis.

Eight families (121 individuals) with two or more members affected with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were analyzed for histocompatibility antigens (HLA-A, B, C, DR, MT, and MB) and complement antigens (C4A, C4B, and BF). These data were correlated with serological markers (antinuclear antibodies, single- and double-stranded anti-DNA, anti-SM, anti-nRNP, anti-Ro [SS-A], anti-La [SS-B], and biological false-positive tests for syphilis and clinical features. Fifteen members had SLE, and 19 had other immune diseases (subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, discoid lupus erythematosus, hypoth

Lyme Borreliosis (LB) is an infection transmitted by Ixodes sp. ticks. Its early manifestation includes erythema migrans rash. Since the discovery of LB in 1975, the question arose as to whether this infection could be vertically transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy, as transplacental transmission has already been known for other spirochetoses, such as syphilis, relapsing fever and leptospirosis. The first confirmed case with positive Lyme serology was described in 1985 in a 28-year- old mother who had acquired Lyme in the first trimester and then developed an erythema migrans ras

BACKGROUND: Mucocutaneous findings may provide important early clues to systemic disease. Because the skin, oral mucosa, eyes, and other visible mucosal surfaces are readily accessible during clinical examination, their careful assessment can contribute to earlier recognition of autoimmune, infectious, metabolic, endocrine, inflammatory, and malignant conditions.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to summarize clinically relevant mucocutaneous manifestations that may act as early indicators of systemic disease, with emphasis on their diagnostic significance and practical relevance for clin

BACKGROUND: Yaws is a chronic relapsing disease caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pertunue, which can result in severe disability and deformities. Children below the age of 15 years in resource-poor communities are the most affected. Several non-specific factors facilitate the continuous transmission and resurgence of the disease. Endemic communities in rural Ghana continue to report cases despite the roll out of several intervention strategies in the past years. The objective of this study was to determine the factors associated with cutaneous ulcers among children in two yaws-endemic d

Sexually transmitted infections may provoke a wide variety of rheumatic lesions. Disseminated N. gonorrhoeae infection leads to septic arthritis, which may be rapidly destructive but which responds promptly to appropriate antibiotic therapy. In contrast, both gonococcal and nongonococcal infections may lead to aseptic "reactive" arthritis or Reiter's syndrome. Inheritance of HLA B27 confers a relative risk of 30 to 50 times for the development of this condition. The demonstration of C. trachomatis antigen in joint material from a minority of patients suggests that direct interaction between mi
