Prevalence and factors associated with trachoma among children aged 1-9 years in Zala district, Gamo Gofa Zone, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. It is common in areas where people are socioeconomically deprived. Globally, approximately 1.2 billion people live in trachoma-endemic areas, in which, 40.6 million individuals have active trachoma and 8.2 million have trichiasis. According to the World Health Organization's 2007 report, globally close to 1.3 million people are blind due to trachoma, while approximately 84 million suffer from active trachoma. The National Survey (2007) of Ethiopia showed a prevalence of 40.1% active trachoma among children aged 1-9 y

Integrating an NTD with one of "The big three": combined malaria and trachoma survey in Amhara Region of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia has a population of approximately 19.6 million, is prone to unstable and epidemic malaria, and is severely affected by trachoma. An integrated malaria and trachoma control program is being implemented by the Regional Health Bureau. To provide baseline data, a survey was conducted during December 2006 to estimate malaria parasite prevalence, malaria indicators, prevalence of trachoma, and trachoma risk factors in households and people of all ages in each of the ten zones of the state, excluding three urban centers (0.4% of the population). Impact of annual targeted treatment on infectious trachoma and susceptibility to reinfection.

CONTEXT: The World Health Organization developed the SAFE strategy (Surgery for trichiasis; Antibiotics for Chlamydia trachomatis infection; Facial cleanliness; and Environmental improvement) to eliminate blinding trachoma globally by the year 2020. Despite a number of studies using various intervals of treatment for different prevalence rates, there has been a lack of sufficient follow-up beyond the final treatment point to determine rates of recurrence of disease and infection and the risk factors that may contribute to each. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of 2 annual targeted azithromyc

Where do we go from here? Prevalence of trachoma three years after stopping mass distribution of antibiotics in the regions of Kayes and Koulikoro, Mali.

OBJECTIVES: A national survey in 1997 demonstrated that trachoma was endemic in Mali. Interventions to control trachoma including mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin were launched in the regions of Kayes and Koulikoro in 2003. MDA was discontinued after three annual rounds in 2006, and an impact survey conducted. We resurveyed all districts in Kayes and Koulikoro in 2009 to reassess trachoma prevalence and determine intervention objectives for the future. In this paper we present findings from both the 2006 and 2009 surveys. METHODS: Population-based cluster surveys were conducte

Perceptions and practices of community members relating to trachoma in Africa: a qualitative systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to synthesize the perceptions and practices of community members relating to trachoma in Africa. INTRODUCTION: Trachoma is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and Africa is the worst-affected continent. Synthesized evidence relating to the disease has focused on various aspects including epidemiology, control, health education, facial cleanliness, interventions for trachomatous trichiasis, and the burden of trachoma on women. Currently, systematic reviews on perceptions and practices relating to trachoma are lacking despite the existence of pr

[Chronic mucosynechial pemphigoid: so-called ocular pemphigus].

The so-called ocular pemphigus is an oculocutaneomucosal disease, the clinical manifestations of which have been recognized for over a century while its recognition as a nosological and histopathological unit is quite recent. The clinical picture in the eye consists essentially of progressive scar contraction which, preceded by a transient bullous phase, leads to symblepharon, entropion and trichiasis. Corneal complications, such as bullous eruption, erosions, proliferation of vasculoconnective tissue, supervene later. The final appearance is that of complete xerosis with total symblepharon pr

Phylogenetic diversity, functional pathways, and network interactions of ocular chlamydia-like organisms (CLOs) in trachoma-endemic Ethiopia.

Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide and classically attributed to Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct). However, other members of the phylum Chlamydiae, particularly environmental chlamydia-like organisms (CLOs), may modulate ocular ecology and influence disease outcomes. Here, we investigated CLO distribution, phylogeny, and microbiome associations among 1,059 individuals from trachoma-endemic communities in Ethiopia using targeted 16S rRNA sequencing and metagenomic shotgun sequencing. CLOs were detected in 249 (23.3%) participants of all ages and sexes and were significant

Surveillance Surveys for Reemergent Trachoma in Formerly Endemic Districts in Nepal From 2 to 10 Years After Mass Drug Administration Cessation.

IMPORTANCE: To verify districts for elimination of blinding trachoma, the World Health Organization requires a population-based surveillance survey for follicular trachoma (TF) and trachomatous trichiasis (TT) 2 years after mass drug administration (MDA) activities have ceased. However, it is unknown if 2 years provides enough time to discover reemergence. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of trachoma from surveys among 4 districts in Nepal (Dailekh, Dang, Surkhet, and Kanchanpur) that had surveillance intervals of 2, 4, 8, and 10 years, respectively, after cessation of MDA. DESIGN, SET

Trans-ethnic study confirmed independent associations of HLA-A*02:06 and HLA-B*44:03 with cold medicine-related Stevens-Johnson syndrome with severe ocular surface complications.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and its severe variant, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), are acute inflammatory vesiculobullous reactions of the skin and mucous membranes. Cold medicines including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and multi-ingredient cold medications are reported to be important inciting drugs. Recently, we reported that cold medicine related SJS/TEN (CM-SJS/TEN) with severe mucosal involvement including severe ocular surface complications (SOC) is associated with HLA-A*02:06 and HLA-B*44:03 in the Japanese. In this study, to determine whether HLA-B*44:03 is a common risk

Trachoma surveillance in Australia, 2009. A report by the National Trachoma Surveillance and Reporting Unit.

Trachoma is highly prevalent in remote Indigenous communities in Australia. The National Trachoma Surveillance and Reporting Unit was established in 2006 as a result of a Federal Government initiative to provide comprehensive surveillance data from regional and remote Indigenous communities considered by the jurisdictional population health staff to be 'At Risk' for endemic trachoma, defined as a trachoma prevalence of 5% or more. This report details the findings from the 2009 trachoma screening program together with trends in trachoma prevalence and screening coverage since 2006. Aboriginal c

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Management of Locally Advanced Periorbital Tumors: Efficacy and Toxicity Profile.

BACKGROUND: The management of locally advanced periorbital skin tumors with orbital invasion is challenging. Orbital exenteration historically provides reliable local control but causes major functional and cosmetic morbidity. We evaluated stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as an eye-sparing alternative, focusing on local control, vision preservation, and toxicity. METHODS: This retrospective series includes 26 consecutive patients with locally advanced periorbital tumors treated prospectively with SBRT. Tumors involved the canthi (zones III-IV) in 20 patients, with multi-zone involve

Water, sanitation, and hygiene for control of trachoma in Ethiopia (WUHA): a two-arm, parallel-group, cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: WHO promotes the SAFE strategy for the elimination of trachoma as a public health programme, which promotes surgery for trichiasis (ie, the S component), antibiotics to clear the ocular strains of chlamydia that cause trachoma (the A component), facial cleanliness to prevent transmission of secretions (the F component), and environmental improvements to provide water for washing and sanitation facilities (the E component). However, little evidence is available from randomised trials to support the efficacy of interventions targeting the F and E components of the strategy. We aimed

Double-dose azithromycin mass drug administration, facial cleanliness, and fly control measures for trachoma control in Oromia, Ethiopia (Stronger SAFE): a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. WHO recommends the SAFE strategy for trachoma elimination: surgery for trichiasis (S), antibiotics (A), facial cleanliness (F), and environmental improvement (E). Multiple rounds of SAFE implementation have proven insufficient to eliminate trachoma in Ethiopia, where over 50% of the global trachoma burden remains. We aimed to evaluate a package of interventions to reduce the prevalence of conjunctival C trachomatis and accelerate trachoma elimination. METHODS: Stronger SAFE was an open-label, cluster-randomised controlled

Drug-Induced Periocular and Ocular Surface Disorders: An EAACI Position Paper.

Various systemic and topical medications can induce ocular and periocular cutaneous adverse effects (AEs), ranging from mild to severe. These AEs may lead to ocular surface (OS) damage and, in some cases, life-threatening complications. Drug-induced ocular adverse reactions are generally classified into two primary categories: toxic reactions and/or allergic hypersensitivity reactions, which can be IgE or non-IgE-mediated. Systemic antibiotics, antivirals, and anticonvulsants can trigger adverse reactions that may involve the OS. Drugs like antihistamines, beta-blockers, antipsychotics, antide
