Intimate partner violence/abuse and depressive symptoms among female health care workers: longitudinal findings.

Intimate partner violence and abuse (IPV/A) have been shown to have a major impact on mental health functioning. This study assessed the longitudinal association between recent IPV/A and depressive symptoms to identify potential targets for preventive interventions for women. Random effects models were used to examine four waves of data collected at 6-month intervals from a cohort of 1,438 female health care workers. IPV/A (e.g., sexual and physical violence, psychological abuse) in the past 5 years was associated with higher Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) 10 scores

Samples used convenience, online panel, and population-representative methods. IPV was a pre-specified primary outcome, measured using questions from a validated World

Putting Out Fires: The Experiences of Wisconsin Rural Health Officers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Health care settings are not immune to workplace violence, and emergency department workers are especially susceptible. We conducted a study of emergency department workers to assess their experiences with violence and the perceived effects of Act 209. METHODS: We developed a survey for health care workers (nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers) who were currently practicing in a Wisconsin emergency departm

Interpersonal and systemic aspects of emotional abuse at work: the target's perspective.

The most frequent form of workplace aggression is not physical, it is emotional and psychological in nature. Known by many names, emotional abuse at work is rapidly becoming recognized as pervasive and costly both in individual and organizational terms. Most of the research to date on emotional abuse at work has utilized survey and other quantitative methodologies in an effort to document the presence, prevalence, and impact of these behaviors. However, these methodologies are based on researchers' definitions and theories of what constitutes emotional abuse rather than on the meaning given to

Safety factors predictive of job satisfaction and job retention among home healthcare aides.

OBJECTIVES: Although many of the well known work characteristics associated with job satisfaction in home health care have been documented, a unique aspect of the home health care aides' (HHA) work environment that might also affect job satisfaction is the fact that their workplace is a household. To obtain a better understanding of the potential impact of the risks/exposures/hazards within the household environment on job satisfaction and job retention in home care, we recently conducted a risk assessment study. METHODS: Survey data from a convenience sample of 823 New York City HHAs were ob

Vertical and lateral workplace bullying in nursing: development of the hospital aggressive behaviour scale.

Healthcare staff is one of the professional groups that suffers the highest exposure to sources of occupational stress such as hostility from coworkers and superiors. In order to contribute to the assessment of bullying behaviors in the healthcare sector and to obtain a brief and manageable instrument for the assessment of this psychosocial risk, we developed the Hospital Aggressive Behaviour Scale-version Co-workers-Superiors (HABS-CS). By means of thorough qualitative analysis, an initial pool of 166 items was obtained, which were reviewed according to precise criteria until concluding with

Jonathan Rosen has spent more than 30 years building union-based health and safety programs. In the 1970s he was a union activist. In 1980 he became a union health and safety committee chair at a Milwaukee manufacturing firm. Following that, he had a nearly 20-year career with the New York State Public Employees Federation (PEF). He trained as an industrial hygienist and developed a highly regarded public sector union-based health and safety program. PEF's Health and Safety Department supported a network of union health and safety committees. Program accomplishments included innovative work on

Managing the Long-Term Effects of Psychological Abuse on (Im)migrant Domestic Workers.

While researchers have highlighted the emotional distress of migrant domestic workers who experience abuse by employers, less is known about long-term effects of the psychological abuse that they experience. Drawing from a broader ethnographic study of Filipino and Indonesian migration to Chile, we analyze three Filipina domestic workers' migration narratives to examine how they narrate and manage the long-term effects of psychological abuse in the domestic workplace that they experienced more than ten years earlier. Building on insights from medical anthropology and using narrative analysis,

"You can't swim well if there is a weight dragging you down": cross-sectional study of intimate partner violence, sexual assault and child abuse prevalence against Australian nurses, midwives and carers.

BACKGROUND: Domestic and family violence (DFV), including intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault and child abuse are prevalent health and social issues, often precipitating contact with health services. Nurses, midwives and carers are frontline responders to women and children who have experienced violence, with some research suggesting that health professionals themselves may report a higher incidence of IPV in their personal lives compared to the community. This paper reports the largest study of DFV against health professionals to date. METHOD: An online descriptive, cross-section

Which psychosocial job demands matter most for parasympathetic heart rate variability? A dominance analysis study.

OBJECTIVES: Prolonged reduced heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with impaired health and chronic diseases. Despite this connection, it remains unclear which psychosocial job demands are the strongest predictors of reduced HRV and poorer health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the most relevant psychosocial job demands that predict reduced HRV. METHODS: The study participants were 163 municipal employees (86% female, mean age 47) who responded to a survey on psychosocial job demands and measured their electrocardiography-based HRV over 4 consecutive nights during a normal work
