OBJECTIVES: The bonding of resin to dentine is dependent largely on surface modifications. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that a role of the metal chlorides used as primers is to initiate polymerization of resin at the resin-dentine interface, thereby affecting bond strength.

Elevation of transcobalamin I and serum vitamin B12 levels has usually been associated with increased granulocytic proliferation, such as occurs in chronic myelogenous leukemia. Pentoxifyllin (PTX), a nonselective phosphodiesterase inhibitor, is used to attenuate peripheral vascular diseases. We examined the paraquat detoxicative system in mouse livers. The survival rate of mice receiving 50 mg/kg paraquat was 41% at 7 days and significantly rose to 88, 64, 69% with pretreatment with phenytoin, phenobarbital, and rifampicin, respectively. Phenytoin induced activity in NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase, CYP3A, CYP2B, and CYP2C that was 3 to 4 times higher than that of the controls. Phenobarbital induced CYP2B and rifampicin induced CYP3A, respectively, in addition to NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase. 3-Methylcholanthrene did not induce these enzymes and did not alter the survival rate.

PURPOSE: The aim of this explorative study was to evaluate the impact of selenium in the treatment of lymphedema after radiotherapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 1996 and June 2001, 12 patients with edema of the arm and 36 patients with edema of the head-and-neck region were treated with selenium for therapy-related lymphedema. Of these 36 patients, 20 had interstitial endolaryngeal edema associated with stridor and dyspnea. All patients received sodium selenite over 4 to 6 weeks.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that the all-trans retinoic acid (atRA)-mediated protective effects in various cells are related to the inhibition of nuclear factor (NF)-κB activities. There exists some evidence that an increase in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is expressed by proximal tubular epithelial cells and regulated by NFκB, may play a critical role in maintaining peritubular capillary endothelium in renal disease.
