Bacterial co-infections with SARS-CoV-2.

The pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected millions of people worldwide. To date, there are no proven effective therapies for this virus. Efforts made to develop antiviral strategies for the treatment of COVID-19 are underway. Respiratory viral infections, such as influenza, predispose patients to co-infections and these lead to increased disease severity and mortality. Numerous types of antibiotics such as azithromycin have been employed for the prevention and treatment of bacterial co-infection and se

Impact of an infectious diseases specialist-led antimicrobial stewardship programmes on antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in a large Korean hospital.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an infectious diseases specialist (IDS)-led antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) in a large Korean hospital. An interrupted time series analysis assessing the trends in antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance rate of major pathogens between September 2015 and August 2017 was performed in an 859-bed university-affiliated hospital in Korea. The restrictive measure for designated antibiotics led by an IDS reduced carbapenems usage by -4.57 days of therapy (DOT)/1,000 patient-days per month in general wards (GWs) (95% confidence interv

Bypassing fluoroquinolone resistance with quinazolinediones: studies of drug-gyrase-DNA complexes having implications for drug design.

Widespread fluoroquinolone resistance has drawn attention to quinazolinediones (diones), fluoroquinolone-like topoisomerase poisons that are unaffected by common quinolone-resistance mutations. To better understand differences between quinolones and diones, we examined their impact on the formation of cleaved complexes (drug-topoisomerase-DNA complexes in which the DNA moiety is broken) with gyrase, one of two bacterial targets of the drugs. Formation of cleaved complexes, measured by linearization of a circular DNA substrate, required lower concentrations of quinolone than dione. The reverse

Infection control during parenteral nutrition therapy.

Parenteral nutrition therapy can achieve an anabolic state in patients who are unable to maintain normal nitrogen balance; however, it may be associated with infectious complications. Infections may be related to contamination of the cannula and the cannula wound, of the infusate, or of other parts of the parenteral nutrition system. A variety of microorganisms has been associated with these infections. The exact mechanisms that initiate cannula-related infection are poorly understood. Susceptibility of the host, the method and site of cannula insertion, colonization of parenteral nutrition ca

Post-mortem characterisation of pathogen-specific causes of infection-related deaths in African and south Asian neonates: a prospective, observational, multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Post-mortem biological investigation of causes of deaths is uncommon in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). The primary objective of Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) is to determine the underlying and contributing causes of death for stillbirths and children younger than 5 years, including identification of specific pathogens and risk factors associated with mortality. We report on the role of infections, including pathogen-specific causes, in the overall causal pathway to death in neonates (aged <28 days) across CHAMPS sites in Ethiopia, Keny

Results of microbiological surveillance in patients with high-voltage eletrical injuries: A 10-year single center experience.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: High voltage electrotrauma is one of the most serious injuries we can encounter in modern medicine, often associated with multiple disabilities and high susceptibility to infectious complications. These patients are admitted to specialized burn centers and require extensive multidisciplinary collaboration. In this study, we aim to uncover the prevalence, types and characteristics of microbial infections that develop in the aftermath of high voltage electrotrauma and to identify risk factors that may contribute to patients' susceptibility to infections. A Review of Omadacycline for Potential Utility in the Military Health System for the Treatment of Wound Infections.

INTRODUCTION: Combat-related wound infections complicate the recovery of wounded military personnel, contributing to overall morbidity and mortality. Wound infections in combat settings present unique challenges because of the size and depth of the wounds, the need to administer emergency care in the field, and the need for subsequent treatment in military facilities. Given the increase in multidrug-resistant pathogens, a novel, broad-spectrum antibiotic is desired across this continuum of care when the standard of care fails. Omadacycline was FDA-approved in 2018 for treatment of adults with

"Unusual Presentation of Epitheloid Dermatofibroma- Rare Case Report".

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as aluminum (Al)] is becoming a serious global problem due to the rapid development of the social economy. Although plant growth-promoting rhizo-bacteria (PGPR) are the major protectants to alleviate metal toxicity, the study of these bacteria to ameliorate the toxic effects of Al is limited. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of different levels of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (5 ppm and 10 ppm) of accession number of MT123456 on plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attribute

Trends of antimicrobial resistance in patients with complicated urinary tract infection: Suggested empirical therapy and lessons learned from a retrospective observational study in Oman.

BACKGROUND: Complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI) is defined as an infection associated with structural, functional, or metabolic abnormalities of the genitourinary tract. These infections are caused frequently by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. The rapid emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC, and carbapenemase (CR) producers has made the treatment of such infections increasingly more challenging. OBJECTIVES: The aims of the present study were threefold: to assess the clinical profile, trends in etiology, and antimicrobial susceptibility profile in cUTI ov

Endophytic actinobacteria of Hymenachne amplexicaulis from the Brazilian Pantanal wetland produce compounds with antibacterial and antitumor activities.

The increase in the number of deaths from infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria and cancer diseases highlights the need for new molecules with biological activity. Actinobacteria represent a potential source of new compounds, as these microorganisms have already produced a great diversity of clinically employed antibiotics. Endophytes from unexplored biomes, such as the Pantanal (the largest wetland in the world), can be a source of new molecules. Hymenachne amplexicaulis is among the unexplored native plants of the Pantanal in terms of its endophytic community. This plant is consi

Structure- and Ligand-Dynamics-Based Design of Novel Antibiotics Targeting Lipid A Enzymes LpxC and LpxH in Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Bacterial infections caused by multi-drug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens pose a serious threat to public health. Gram-negative bacteria are characterized by the enrichment of lipid A-anchored lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or lipooligosaccharide (LOS) in the outer leaflet of their outer membrane. Constitutive biosynthesis of lipid A via the Raetz pathway is essential for bacterial viability and fitness in the human host. The inhibition of early-stage lipid A enzymes such as LpxC not only suppresses the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter spp., and other clinicall

Comprehensive Genomic Investigation of Tigecycline Resistance Gene tet(X4)-Bearing Strains Expanding among Different Settings.

The emergence of plasmid-mediated tigecycline resistance genes has attracted a great deal of attention globally. Currently, no comprehensive in-depth genomic epidemiology study of tet(X4)-bearing pathogens present of pork origin as the One Health approach has been performed. Herein, 139 fresh pork samples were collected from multiple regions in China and 58 tet(X4)-positive strains were identified. The tet(X4) gene mainly distributed in Escherichia coli (n = 55). Besides, 4 novel tet(X4)-positive bacterial species Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 2), Klebsiella quasipneumoniae (n = 1), Citrobacter b

Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia: a histological pattern of lung injury and possible variant of diffuse alveolar damage.

CONTEXT: The histologic patterns of diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP), and eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) are well-recognized histologic patterns of lung injury associated with an acute or subacute clinical presentation. We have recognized acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) as a histologic pattern, which also occurs in this clinical setting but does not meet the classic histologic criteria for DAD, BOOP, or EP and may represent an underreported variant. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance of the AFOP histologic p
