Gluten-Free Diet Adherence Tools for Individuals with Celiac Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Tools Compared to Laboratory Tests.

This systematic review aimed to find the tool that best predicts celiac individuals' adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). The Transparent Reporting of Multivariable Prediction Models for Individual Prognosis or Diagnosis (TRIPOD-SRMA) guideline was used for the construction and collection of data from eight scientific databases (PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, Web of Science, LIVIVO, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and Proquest) on 16 November 2023. The inclusion criteria were studies involving individuals with celiac disease (CD) who were over 18 years old and on a GFD for at least six months, using a ques

A Screening Method Using Anomaly Detection on a Smartphone for Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Diagnostic Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition caused by compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel due to aging or overuse of the hand. The symptoms include numbness of the fingers and atrophy of the thenar muscle. Thenar atrophy recovers slowly postoperatively; therefore, early diagnosis and surgery are important. While physical examinations and nerve conduction studies are used to diagnose CTS, problems with the diagnostic ability and equipment, respectively, exist. Despite research on a CTS-screening app that uses a tablet and machine learning, problems with the

Feasibility of salivary DNA collection in a population-based case-control study: a pilot study of pediatric Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies combining exposure and outcome data with the collection of biosamples are needed to study gene-environment interactions that might contribute to the etiology of complex diseases such as pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). Nationwide registries, including those in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries, provide efficient and reliable sources of data for epidemiological studies evaluating the environmental determinants of disease. We performed a pilot study to test the feasibility of collecting salivary DNA to augment registry data in established cases of pediatri

Right Iliac Fossa Pain Treatment (RIFT) Study: protocol for an international, multicentre, prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients presenting with right iliac fossa (RIF) pain are a common challenge for acute general surgical services. Given the range of potential pathologies, RIF pain creates diagnostic uncertainty and there is subsequent variation in investigation and management. Appendicitis is a diagnosis which must be considered in all patients with RIF pain; however, over a fifth of patients undergoing appendicectomy, in the UK, have been proven to have a histologically normal appendix (negative appendicectomy). The primary aim of this study is to determine the contemporary negative appendicec

Omics-driven onboarding of the carotenoid producing red yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous CBS 6938.

Transcriptomics is a powerful approach for functional genomics and systems biology, yet it can also be used for genetic part discovery. Here, we derive constitutive and light-regulated promoters directly from transcriptomics data of the basidiomycete red yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous CBS 6938 (anamorph Phaffia rhodozyma) and use these promoters with other genetic elements to create a modular synthetic biology parts collection for this organism. X. dendrorhous is currently the sole biotechnologically relevant yeast in the Tremellomycete class-it produces large amounts of astaxanthin, espe

Communicating Uncertainty From Limitations in Quality of Evidence to the Public in Written Health Information: Protocol for a Web-Based Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Uncertainty is integral to evidence-informed decision making and is of particular importance for preference-sensitive decisions. Communicating uncertainty to patients and the public has long been identified as a goal in the informed and shared decision-making movement. Despite this, there is little quantitative research on how uncertainty in health information is perceived by readers. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to design an experiment to examine how different degrees of uncertainty (Q1) and different types of uncertainty (Q2) impact patients' perception of treatment

Unified framework for the ingestion of early epidemic data for downstream data analytics.

BACKGROUND: Early-phase data during an epidemic are often heterogeneous and difficult to integrate across systems, therefore a need for standard tools and reporting guidelines to facilitate timely and reliable data collection. The Global.health team have developed a data schema for the ingestion of epidemic data, allowing interoperability where data curated to this schema are readily ingested into existing systems for analysis. This paper describes the definition of 'core data' within the Global.health schema to focus data collection on the most relevant and available data to inform epidemic r

Innovations in mandibular advancement splint therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Mandibular advancement splint (MAS) therapy emerged as an effective therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in the mid 1990s, and is now the leading treatment alternative for OSA. Since its inception, the field has seen a suite of revisions and advances in relation to design and customisation, fabrication, titration methods, response prediction models and the integration of data collection technology. This paper reviews these current and emerging innovations in MAS therapy and their impact upon sleep apnoea management.

Diagnosis of Internal Jugular Vein Septic Thrombophlebitis by Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

Septic thrombophlebitis represents a rare but serious collection of diseases, which carry a high risk of morbidity and mortality requiring prompt and aggressive treatment. Diagnosis centers on identification of thrombus along with clinical and microbiologic data. We present a case where point-of-care ultrasound was used to diagnose septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and expedite appropriate therapy. We further review the technique and literature for ultrasound diagnosis of venous thrombosis and associated thrombophlebitis.

The ddn Trp20Stop Mutation and Its Association with Lineage 4.5 and Resistance to Delamanid and Pretomanid in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

High-confidence resistance mutations for new and repurposed anti-TB drugs, such as delamanid (DLM) and pretomanid (Pa), are rare and more data are needed in order to correctly interpret the results generated by genotypic drug susceptibility testing. In this study performed on clinical Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates, we report that in the Swedish strain collection the ddn mutation Trp20Stop is found exclusively among DLM and Pa resistant (Pa MIC >16 mg/L) isolates assigned to lineage 4.5.
