Outcomes of phacoemulsification in patients with uveitis at a tertiary center in São Paulo, Brazil: a review of cases from 2007 to 2012.

PURPOSE:: To evaluate the outcomes of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in eyes with uveitis. METHODS:: Consecutive patients with uveitis and cataracts who had phacoemulsification and acrylic IOL implantation during 2007-2012 were evaluated for visual outcomes, etiology, and complications. Inflammation was controlled for at least 3 months before surgery, and oral prednisone (0.5 mg/kg/day) was administered to patients with non-infectious uveitis. RESULTS:: This study investigated 45 eyes in 38 patients with a mean age of 52 ± 12.5 years. The most common etiologies

PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term effect of fixed combination of brinzolamide 1% and timolol 0.5% (FCBT) application on human central corneal thickness (CCT). METHODS: This prospective clinical study included 97 patients having Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification. Patients were randomized to receive apraclonidine hydrochloride 0.5% (APRA) (n=48) or FCBT (n=49) at 1 h before laser surgery. The baseline CCT was evaluated by ultrasonographic pachymetry from the central region ∼1 h before the laser procedure. CCT measurements were applied just before the laser

Comparative effects of TGF-β2/Smad2 and TGF-β2/Smad3 signaling pathways on proliferation, migration, and extracellular matrix production in a human lens cell line.

The signaling pathway of transforming growth factor β2 (TGF-β2)/Smad plays an important role in the pathological process in posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery. Smad2 and Smad3 are both receptor-regulated Smads (R-Smads) of the TGF-β2 signaling pathway. We aim to find which among Smad2, Smad3, and Smad2&3 plays a key role in PCO pathology. The signal characteristics of TGF-β2 and Smad proteins in the human lens cell line HLE-B3 were investigated. Smad2, Smad3, or Smad2&3 were silenced using small interfering RNA. We then tested cell proliferation by 3-(4,5-dimethylthia

FGF-2 counteracts loss of TGFbeta affected cells from rat lens explants: implications for PCO (after cataract).

PURPOSE: While cataract surgery initially benefits most patients, many suffer secondary loss of vision because of posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Lens epithelial cells left behind at surgery become aberrant and migrate into the light path. TGF-beta (TGFbeta) appears to play a key role in this process by inducing the cells to undergo an epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Paradoxically, it also typically induces them to undergo apoptotic death. The present study was undertaken to investigate the hypothesis that FGF plays a role in PCO formation by promoting the survival of abnormal cells

Case Report: Resolution of negative dysphotopsia after capsulorhexis revision in an extended depth of focus intraocular lens.

Negative dysphotopsia (ND) is a known cause of patient dissatisfaction following cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. While IOL explantation is often considered in persistent cases, identifying reversible anatomical factors is essential to minimize surgical risk. Capsulorhexis size and configuration have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ND but remain underrecognized as a direct therapeutic target. A 73-year-old woman underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification with implantation of an extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL in the left eye. Postoperatively, she experience

Bag-in-the-lens intraocular lens implantation before 12 weeks of age in congenital cataract.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra- and postoperative complications, especially the risk of visual axis opacification (VAO), following the implantation of the bag-in-the-lens (BIL) intraocular lens (IOL) in infants with congenital cataract operated on before 12 weeks of age. METHODS: Infants operated on before 12 weeks of age between June 2020 and June 2021 with a follow-up longer than 1 year were included in the present retrospective study. This was a first-experience cohort of an experienced paediatric cataract surgeon with this type of lens. RESULTS: Nine infants (13

Senescence-Driven IL-17A Inflammatory Circuit Promotes Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and Progression in Age-Related Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts.

Cataract is a leading cause of visual impairment worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing with population aging. The majority are age-related cataracts (ARC), clinically classified into nuclear, cortical, and posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSC) by opacity location. Mechanisms of cataractogenesis remain incompletely understood. While cortical and nuclear cataracts are largely attributed to crystallin aggregation, such protein-centric mechanisms fail to explain the early onset and axial location of PSC. Morphologically, PSC resembles posterior capsule opacification (PCO), a secondary catara

Advances in loading-release-repair strategies of hydrogels for anterior segment disease therapy.

Anterior segment (AS) diseases are a major group of ocular disorders that impair ocular surface homeostasis, optical transparency, aqueous humor circulation, and postoperative visual quality, including Dry Eye Disease (DED), corneal injury, Infectious Keratitis (IK), uveitis, glaucoma, and Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). The therapeutic goal of these diseases extends beyond symptom relief toward the establishment of integrated treatment systems capable of overcoming complex ocular barriers and actively regulating the pathological immune microenvironment and inflammatory cascades through

GSH Levels Serve As a Biological Redox Switch Regulating Sulforaphane-Induced Cell Fate in Human Lens Cells.

PURPOSE: Sulforaphane (SFN) is a therapeutic phytochemical agent for many health conditions. SFN-induced cytotoxicity is shown to have promise in preventing posterior capsule opacification (PCO). In the current study, we aimed to elucidate key processes and mechanisms linking SFN treatment to lens cell death. METHODS: The human lens epithelial cell line FHL124 and central anterior epithelium were used as experimental models. Cell death was assessed by microscopic observation and cell damage/viability assays. Gene or protein levels were assessed by TaqMan RT-PCR or immunoblotting. Mitochondria
