Impact of brief exposure to antifungal agents on the post-antifungal effect and hemolysin activity of oral Candida albicans.

Post-antifungal effect (PAFE) of Candida and its production of hemolysin are determinants of candidal pathogenicity. Candida albicans is the foremost aetiological agent of oral candidosis, which can be treated with polyene, azole, and echinocandin antifungals. However, once administered, the intraoral concentrations of these drugs tend to be subtherapeutic and transient due to the diluent effect of saliva and cleansing effect of the oral musculature. Hence, intra-orally, Candidamay undergo a brief exposure to antifungal drugs. Objective Therefore, the PAFE and hemolysin production of oral C. al

Influence of resilient support of abutment teeth on fracture resistance of all-ceramic fixed partial dentures: an in vitro study.

PURPOSE: The influence of resilient support of abutment teeth on the fracture resistance of all-ceramic three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) was tested in this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups (n = 8) of glass-infiltrated, alumina-based, all-ceramic FPDs that were adhesively bonded to human molar teeth were investigated. In control group A, teeth that were rigidly inserted in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin were used for thermocycling and mechanical loading (TCML), as well as for fracture testing. In group B, TCML was conducted on teeth that had their roots covered with a p

A Novel Approach for Immediate Implant-Based Oral Rehabilitation in a Sjögren's Syndrome Patient Using Virtual Surgical and Prosthetic Planning.

Patients with Sjögren syndrome (SS) experience difficulties in wearing conventional dentures. After removal of all teeth, the oral rehabilitation is challenging and time consuming using conventional treatment protocols. Although implant-retained overdentures are beneficial for this specific patient group, the average total oral rehabilitation time (TORT) usually takes at least 9 months and needs to be reduced to increase patients' quality of life (QoL). In this paper, we report on a new treatment concept for immediate implant-based oral rehabilitation in a 77-year-old patient with partial eden

Interdisciplinary Management of an Infected Dentigerous Cyst Associated with an Impacted Maxillary Canine: A Case Report with a 6-year Follow-up.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common type of odontogenic cysts, typically associated with impacted teeth, particularly maxillary canines and mandibular third molars. They often remain asymptomatic until they reach a significant size, leading to complications, such as cortical bone expansion, root resorption, and potential infections. The management of dentigerous cysts in pediatric patients requires a multidisciplinary approach involving surgical, orthodontic, and prosthetic rehabilitation strategies. Advanced imaging techniques, such as cone-beam computed tomograph

A clinical evaluation of cobalt-chromium metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures and crowns: A three- to seven-year retrospective study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: In severely compromised dentition, loading of long-span and cantilever metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures (FPDs) could result in framework deformation and porcelain fractures. The use of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys may be advantageous, but there is little information on the longevity of, and complications with, prostheses made with these alloys. PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study was to report the survival and complication rates of Co-Cr metal-ceramic FPDs and crowns followed over a 3- to 7-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 42 patients

Interdisciplinary treatment of an adult with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate.

Interdisciplinary treatment was used for an adult patient born with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate. He had a severe maxillary deficiency with a wide cleft involving the alveolar and maxillary bone and palate. Reconstruction of the arches and occlusion in patients who missed the optimal treatment time is a difficult task for orthodontists. The clinical examination showed severe hypogenesis of the maxillary bone with a total crossbite. The maxillary dental arch was extremely narrow, and the maxillary incisors showed extensive caries caused by improper oral hygiene. Fixed and removable e

Oligodontia Management in a Resource-Limited Setting: Two Case Reports and Review of Literature.

Introduction: Oligodontia represents the developmental absence of six or more teeth, posing significant challenges for masticatory function, speech, and psychosocial well-being. While extensively documented in developed countries, limited reports exist from resource-constrained settings in Africa. This study presents two pediatric cases of oligodontia managed with available resources and analyzes their clinical presentations against current literature. This case report was prepared following the CARE guidelines to ensure methodological rigor and completeness. Cases and Interventions: Case 1, a

Effects of local cooling rate and processing variables on leucite in dental porcelain.

PURPOSE: This research determined whether there is a measurable effect of local geometry factors on leucite content of dental porcelain in fixed partial dentures (FPD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four-unit FPD frameworks (n = 36) were fabricated using a nickel-chromium alloy (Rexillium III). Body porcelain (Crystar, shade A2) was applied in one increment and subjected to two simulated body firings, followed by a simulated glaze firing to achieve a thickness of 1.5 to 2.0 mm. The completed FPD specimens were randomly assigned to three groups of 12 specimens each: (1) simulated post-soldering, (2)

Assessment of cytogenetic damage in lymphocytes and in exfoliated nasal cells of dental laboratory technicians exposed to chromium, cobalt, and nickel.

Dental laboratory technicians may be exposed to metal alloys that are used in the production of crowns, bridges and removable partial dentures. These alloys consist of 35-65% cobalt, 20-30% chromium, 0-30% nickel, and small amounts of molybdenum, silica, beryllium, boron and carbon. The aim of this study was to assess whether dental technicians are occupationally exposed to chromium, cobalt and nickel, by analyzing urinary excretion levels of these metals and to investigate the genotoxic effects of occupational exposure associated with dental prostheses production operations by analyzing cytok

The effects of 1% pyrophosphate and 0.02% sodium fluoride on artificial caries lesions in vivo.

We evaluated the potential of a pyrophosphate-fluoride solution to affect the remineralizing-demineralizing equilibrium, i.e., caries-inhibiting/-promoting effects on enamel in vivo. Fifteen subjects carried dentin blocks and enamel thin sections with artificial caries lesions in removable partial dentures for periods of two weeks, during which time they rinsed twice daily in a double-blind, randomized cross-over design with solutions containing (a) 90 ppm F, (b) 90 ppm F and 1% pyrophosphate, or (c) no active agents (placebo). Prosthodontic Rehabilitation as Essential Care Within India's District Health System: A Narrative Review and Conceptual Framework.

BACKGROUND: Despite the National Oral Health Programme (NOHP) mandating the provision of removable partial and complete dentures (CDs) at the district level, prosthodontic services in public facilities remain largely inaccessible across most Indian states, even after more than a decade of policy implementation. With India's elderly population projected to reach 347 million by 2050 and complete edentulism affecting 12%-14% of older adults, the unmet need for prosthodontic care is substantial and continues to grow. AIM: This narrative review synthesises available evidence on the burden and impa
