[Two cases of tick-borne tularemia in Yozgat province, Turkey].

Tularemia which has a worldwide distribution, is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. F.tularensis can infect a wide range of animals and can be transmitted to humans in a variety of ways, the most common being by the bite of an infected arthropod vector (usually tick) in the USA and Europe. The clinical presentations have been classically divided into ulceroglandular, glandular, oculoglandular, pharyngeal, respiratory, and typhoidal tularemia depending on the route of transmission. Arthropod-borne infection generally leads to the ulceroglandular form of tularemia. In Turkey,

Clinical and neurophysiological features of tick paralysis.

The clinical and neurophysiological findings in six Australian children with generalized tick paralysis are described. Paralysis is usually caused by the mature female of the species Ixodes holocyclus. It most frequently occurs in the spring and summer months but can be seen at any time of year. Children aged 1-5 years are most commonly affected. The tick is usually found in the scalp, often behind the ear. The typical presentation is a prodrome followed by the development of an unsteady gait, and then ascending, symmetrical, flaccid paralysis. Early cranial nerve involvement is a feature, par

Detection of spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks and rodents by polymerase chain reaction technique in People's Republic of China.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for amplification of genomic fragments of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae directly from field samples of ticks, tick ova, tick larvae, tick faeces and organs of wild mice was employed for the first time in P.R. of China. Ticks and rodents were collected in Beijing and Heilongjiang, Hainan and Hebei Provinces. The PCR primers were designed from the DNA sequence encoding the 190 K protein of R. rickettsii for a 532 bp long product. Seven of ten tick samples, three of four tick ovum samples, one of two tick larva samples, four of seven tick faec

The prevalence of pathogens in ticks collected from humans in Belgium, 2021, versus 2017.

BACKGROUND: Ticks carry a variety of microorganisms, some of which are pathogenic to humans. The human risk of tick-borne diseases depends on, among others, the prevalence of pathogens in ticks biting humans. To follow-up on this prevalence over time, a Belgian study from 2017 was repeated in 2021. METHODS: During the tick season 2021, citizens were invited to have ticks removed from their skin, send them and fill in a short questionnaire on an existing citizen science platform for the notification of tick bites (TekenNet). Ticks were morphologically identified to species and life stage level

The ecology of Colorado tick fever in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. III. Habitats supporting the virus.

Ecologic studies of small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) were conducted in 1974 in order to identify the specific habitats within the Lower Montane Forest that support Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus. Data was collected on the abundance and distribution of 4 primary rodent species, tick infestation, CTF virus, and neutralizing antibody prevalence. Rodents were captured along transects crossing different habitats. Open stands of ponderosa pine and shrubs on dry, rocky surfaces were found to be important for maintaining CTF virus.

Tick diversity and tick-borne pathogens in livestock and companion animals in Cambodia: A narrative review and new field data (2022-2023).

Ticks are important vectors for pathogens that affect both animal and human health. Research on ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in Cambodia remains limited. This study addresses existing knowledge gaps through two complementary approaches including an evidence synthesis and new field data providing updated data on tick fauna and pathogens. Evidence Synthesis is a review of scientific publications and veterinary student theses reveal substantial knowledge gaps. To date, five tick-borne pathogens have been documented in dogs through peer-reviewed studies: Babesia vogeli (formerly Babesia ca

Rickettsia rickettsii inactivated whole cell antigen vaccine protects against Rocky Mountain spotted fever independent of the adjuvant used.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) caused by Rickettsia rickettsii is the most fatal tick-borne disease in people and dogs in the Americas. This pathogen is transmitted by several hard ticks: Dermacentor species, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and Amblyomma americanum. RMSF can quickly progress to a life-threatening illness with fatalities ranging from 30% to 80%. Doxycycline is the only treatment option, and currently, no methods are available to prevent RMSF. We previously reported that vaccination with R. rickettsii whole cell antigen vaccine (WCAV) with Montanide gel adjuvant offers protection

IxsS7: A novel biomarker for Ixodes scapularis tick bite exposure in humans.

Ixodes scapularis is a primary vector of several important tick-borne pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative bacterial genospecies complex of Lyme disease, Babesia microti, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia miyamotoi, Ehrlichia muris eauclarensis, and Powassan virus. Salivary compounds secreted by I. scapularis during blood feeding are immunogenic and can elicit robust antibody responses in humans which can potentially be leveraged as surrogate markers of prior tick bite exposure. In this study, we investigate the potential of a tick secreted salivary serine prote

Molecular cloning, identification, transcriptional analysis, and silencing of enolase on the life cycle of Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari, Ixodidae) tick.

Ticks, blood-sucking ectoparasites, spread diseases to humans and animals. Haemaphysalis longicornis is a significant vector for tick-borne diseases in medical and veterinary contexts. Identifying protective antigens in H. longicornis for an anti-tick vaccine is a key tick control strategy. Enolase, a multifunctional protein, significantly converts D-2-phosphoglycerate and phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis in cell cytoplasm. This study cloned a complete open reading frame (ORF) of enolase from the H. longicornis tick and characterized its transcriptional and silencing effec

Differential microbial composition in parasitic vs. questing ticks based on 16S next-generation sequencing.

INTRODUCTION: As tick-borne diseases rise to become the second most prevalent arthropod-transmitted disease globally, the increasing investigations focus on ticks correspondingly. Factors contributed to this increase include anthropogenic influences, changes in vertebrate faunal composition, social-recreational shifts, and climatic variation. Employing the 16S gene sequence method in next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows comprehensive pathogen identification in samples, facilitating the development of refined approaches to tick research omnidirectionally. METHODS: In our survey, we compared

Detection of new Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus genotypes in ticks feeding on deer and wild boar, Spain.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is the causative agent of the severe tick-borne, often fatal, zoonotic Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), which is widely distributed worldwide. The CCHFV transmission to humans occurs through tick bite, crushing of engorged ticks or contact with infected host blood. Previously, CCHFV genotype Africa III was reported in Spain. Given the emergence of CCHF and the role of ticks in pathogen maintenance and transmission, we investigated the presence and genotype identity of the virus in tick species parasitizing abundant wild host species in sou

HEALTH SURVEY OF BOREAL CARIBOU (RANGIFER TARANDUS CARIBOU) IN NORTHEASTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.

Boreal woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are listed as threatened across Canada, and a basic understanding of their health status is lacking. From December 2012 to April 2013, we investigated multiple health indices for adult female boreal caribou (n=163) captured from seven herds in NE British Columbia, Canada. Health indices included physical characteristics, physiologic and trace mineral status, exposure to or infection with selected pathogens, and measures of chronic stress and inflammation, including serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, and hair cortisol concentration. Key findings we

Arthropod-Borne Diseases: The Camper's Uninvited Guests.

Arthropod-borne diseases are a major problem whenever outdoor activities bring arthropods and people into contact. The arthropods discussed here include arachnids (ticks) and insects. Most arthropod bites and stings are minor, with the notable exception being bee-sting anaphylaxis. Ticks cause the most disease transmission. Key hard tick vectors include black-legged (Ixodes), dog (Dermacentor), and lone star (Amblyomma) ticks, which transmit Lyme and various rickettsial diseases. Insect repellents, permethrin sprays, and proper tick inspection reduce this risk significantly. Lyme disease and t

Molecular detection of Rickettsia conorii and other zoonotic spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks, Romania.

The diverse tick fauna as well as the abundance of tick populations in Romania represent potential risks for both human and animal health. Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae are recognized as important agents of emerging human tick-borne diseases worldwide. However, the epidemiology of rickettsial diseases has been poorly investigated in Romania. In urban habitats, companion animals which are frequently exposed to tick infestation, play a role in maintenance of tick populations and as reservoirs of tick-borne pathogens. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the occurren
