Exposure to caterpillars results in a variety of clinical effects depending on the species involved. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical effects from caterpillar exposures within Australia. Cases were recruited prospectively from calls to a poison information centre. Subjects were included if they had a definite exposure and they had collected the caterpillar or cocoon. The caterpillars were identified to genus and species level where possible. There were 36 included cases: two were contact exposures to caterpillar contents, one was an ingestion of a caterpillar and the remainin

1. Carbonic anhydrase (E.C.4.2.1.1) catalysed CO2 hydration was studied with enzymes from mammalian and insect sources at CO2 concentrations of 7.6-30.8 mM. 2. At 0.01-0.15 M, potassium chloride (KCl) or choline chloride (ChCl) markedly inhibited all 8 mammalian enzymes studied. 3. Inhibition by KCl is always greater than that associated with ChCl. 4. KCl non-competitively inhibits and choline chloride competitively inhibits bovine carbonic anhydrase. 5. Carbonic anhydrase obtained from fat body, integumentary epithelium and midgut tissues of larval tobacco hornworms, Manduca sexta, is greatly

The insecticidal molecules of spiders persistently evolve to ensure rapid paralysis of their prey, and the best molecules are transmitted to their progeny. Here, we cloned two insecticidal peptides, Bs2 and Bs3, from the venom glands of the theraphosid Brachypelma smithi. Bs2 and Bs3 are 90.2% identical, but they exhibit interesting structural differences at their C-termini, including a connecting disulfide bond (residues Cys15-Cys36 for Bs2 and Cys15-Cys30 for Bs3). The genomic origin of Bs2 and Bs3 may be a cause for gene duplication events. Moreover, Bs2 differs in two residues from Tal1 (9

Hemolymph enables communication between organs in insects and ensures necessary coordination and homeostasis. Its composition can provide important information about the physiological state of an insect and can have diagnostic significance, which might be particularly important in the case of harmful insects subjected to biological control. Galleria mellonella Linnaeus 1758 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a global pest to honey bee colonies. The hemolymph of its larvae was examined after infection with the soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Constantin) Batko 1964 (Entomophthorales). It was found

PURPOSE: Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU) is a severe, rapid-onset panuveitis primarily affecting children, often linked to the setae released in the air or by contact with female moths of the genus Gazalina (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae), or with their egg masses laid on various substrates. This study aims to report a rare case of SHAPU from the higher altitude of Nepal with an alpine climate, with concurrence of necrotising scleritis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of SHAPU at high elevation.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year-trekker male from an alpine climatic region of ea

Senescence seems to be universal in living organisms and plays a major role in life-history strategies. Phenotypic senescence, the decline of body condition and/or performance with age, is a largely understudied component of senescence in natural insect populations, although it would be important to understand how and why insects age under natural conditions. We aimed (i) to investigate how body mass and thorax width change with age in a natural population of the univoltine Clouded Apollo butterfly (Parnassius mnemosyne, Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) and (ii) to assess the relationship of this ch

Migration is a costly strategy in terms of reproduction output. Competition for limited internal resources leads to physiological management of migration-reproduction trade-offs in energy allocation. Migratory insects must choose to determine to allocate energy into reproduction or migration when confronted insufficient energy supply. Although nutrient shortage is known to stimulate insect migration to escape deteriorating habitat, little is known about when and how migratory insects make decisions when confronted by a nutritional shortage. Here Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae

Vertebrate (cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein) and Drosophila (prolonged depolarization afterpotential is not apparent [PINTA]) proteins with a CRAL-TRIO domain transport retinal-based chromophores that bind to opsin proteins and are necessary for phototransduction. The CRAL-TRIO domain gene family is composed of genes that encode proteins with a common N-terminal structural domain. Although there is an expansion of this gene family in Lepidoptera, there is no lepidopteran ortholog of pinta. Further, the function of these genes in lepidopterans has not yet been established. Here, we explo

Antimicrobial peptides are key components of the innate immune response in most multicellular organisms. These molecules are considered as one of the most innovative class of anti-infective agents that have been discovered over the last two decades, and therefore, as a source of inspiration for novel drug design. Insect cystine-rich antimicrobial peptides with the CS alpha beta scaffold (an alpha-helix linked to a beta-sheet by two disulfide bridges) represent particularly attractive templates for the development of systemic agents owing to their remarkable resistance to protease degradation.

Over the past decades, envenomation by caterpillars of Automeris spp. became an increasing health problem in Latin America. Accidental contact with the stinging spines of these caterpillars cause acute local pain, itching, inflammation and skin rashes that persists for days. Even when the cause is obvious, the exact molecular mechanisms responsible for the observed symptoms are yet to be elucidated. Here, we describe for the first time, an active compound in the venom and the study of the bioactivity of the venom extracted from the spines of the caterpillar Automeris zaruma. Electrophysiologic

The aim of the study was to determine the efficacy of dual β-lactam combination treatments derived from eight approved drugs against Galleria mellonella larvae infected with MDR strains of P. aeruginosa. Carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa NCTC 13437 and an unrelated clinical isolate were used to infect G. mellonella larvae and the efficacy of twenty-eight dual β-lactam combination therapies were compared to their constituent monotherapies. For the most potent combinations identified, penicillin-binding protein (PBP) inhibition profiles were measured and compared with each constituent antibioti

Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes chronic lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and acute opportunistic infections in people without CF. Forty-two P. aeruginosa strains from a range of clinical and environmental sources were collated into a single reference strain panel to harmonise research on this diverse opportunistic pathogen. To facilitate further harmonized and comparable research on P. aeruginosa, we characterized the panel strains for growth rates, motility, virulence in the Galleria mellonella infection model, pyocyanin and alginate production, mucoid phenotype, LPS pattern,

PURPOSE: Multimodal imaging of processionary caterpillar hair-induced keratitis with anterior segment optical coherence tomography and in vivo confocal microscopy.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 25-year-old woman presented with acute keratitis induced by multiple tiny processionary caterpillar hairs. She initially experienced severe pain and moderate vision loss, which gradually improved within a few weeks. Diagnosis was confirmed by in vivo confocal microscopy showing a pathognomonic image strictly comparable with ex vivo microscopy photography.
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge,

BACKGROUND: Starchy seeds are an important food and a source of dietary ingredients in many countries. However, they suffer from extensive predation by bruchids (weevils) and other pests. α-Amylase inhibitors are attractive candidates for the control of seed weevils, as these insects are highly dependent on starch as an energy source.
RESULTS: A proteinaceous α-amylase inhibitor from the seeds of Achyranthes aspera was identified, purified and characterised. In electrophoretic analysis, two prominent amylase inhibitor activity bands (AI1 and AI2) were detected. The inhibitor was purified 9.99

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are closely related pathogenic fungi that cause pneumonia and meningitis in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts and are a significant global infectious disease risk. Both species are found in the environment and are acquired via inhalation, leading to an initial pulmonary infection. The infectious propagule is unknown but is hypothesized to be small desiccated yeast cells or spores produced by sexual reproduction (opposite- or same-sex mating). Here we characterize the morphology, germination properties, and virulence of spores. A co

An insect excitatory toxin from Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK IT) was cloned into the expression vector, pTWIN1, and expressed into Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) host cells. The soluble fusion expression of CBD-intein-BmK IT was obtained. The recombinant BmK IT was purified by two anion-exchange chromatography columns and one gel chromatography column. Bioassays were carried out to verify the toxicity of this recombinant toxin. At the end of a 96 h experimental period, 83% of cotton bollworm larvae were killed with an LT(50) value of 58-62 h. Furthermore, the average weight of larvae fed on BmK I

Diagnosis of allergy diseases is at first linked to a detailed history, in which professional activities as well as the environment take an important place. Fishing activity as well as aquarium-related activities may be the origin of a symptomatology which is, often IgE-mediated, respiratory and skin localised: the responsible agents are most often insects in their larval form, crustaceans and worms.

In the tobacco hornworm caterpillar, tactile stimulation of sensory hairs located on the tip of a proleg (the planta) evokes ipsilateral or bilateral retraction of the prolegs in that segment. We have used electrophysiological and anatomical methods to investigate the excitatory neural pathways linking the planta hair afferents and the proleg retractor motoneurons (MNs). An important technical innovation was the development of an isolated proleg and desheathed ganglion preparation that permits rapid and reversible ionic manipulations and drug applications. Tritrophic interactions among plants, gall-inducing herbivores, and their parasitoids are critical components of arid desert ecosystems, yet their complex network structures, and evolutionary adaptations remain poorly understood. This study elucidates the ecological networks and life-history strategies of three distinct gall inducers and their associated parasitoid communities on Lycium ruthenicum, a keystone shrub in Northern Xinjiang, China. First, we report the globally novel gall-inducing behavior in the genus Scrobipalpa, identifying Scrobipalpa erichiodes (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) as th

Urbanization is widely recognized as a major driver of biodiversity loss; however, cities can also provide important refuges for pollinators when diverse and continuous floral resources are available. This study assessed the diversity of spontaneous insect-pollinated flora and its associated pollinator communities across five major urban habitat types (grasslands, road verges, artificial surfaces, wooded areas, and wetlands) in the Mediterranean cities of Pisa, Livorno, and Lucca (central Italy). During a three-year field survey, spontaneous flowering plant species were systematically recorded
