BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: With the ongoing development of intraoral surgical treatment and invasive dental treatments such as implants, odontogenic rhinosinusitis (ORS) is on the rise. ORS related to dental implants accounts for 8% to 37% of cases. The purpose of this study is to define the characteristics of patients with ORS related to dental implants.
METHODS: From 2015 to 2019, the medical records of 15 patients who developed maxillary sinus disease after receiving dental implants were retrospectively analyzed among patients who visited the ear nose and throat and dentistry departments.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic surgery for treatment of nasal, paranasal and anterior skull base pathologies is an established treatment modality. Available rigid endoscopes with angled views provide a 2-dimensional view with restriction of depth perception. In this study we report about our first experience with a new 3D-Chipendoscope in surgery at the nose, paranasal sinuses und anterior skull base.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 patients were enrolled in this study with chronic rhinosinusitis, inverted papilloma, frontal sinus mucocele, frontal sinus osteoma, chronic dacryocystitis and pituitary adenoma

One hundred and sixty two women aged less than 30 years with either a dysplastic change or carcinoma in situ of the squamous epithelium of the uterine cervix were histologically assessed with special emphasis on the detection of the recently described condylomatous lesions (the flat, inverted and the papillomatous ones) caused by human papilloma virus (PHV). A total of 134 condylomatous (CO) lesions were -- discovered, the flat type being the most frequent one (75.4%) followed in decreasing order of frequency by therted (14.2%) and the papillomatous condylomas (10.40/o). The classical papillom

BACKGROUND: During transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy (TEMM) for sinonasal tumors, the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) is resected as it forms part of the medial wall of the maxillary sinus. This disrupts the nasolacrimal drainage system. To ensure that epiphora does not develop after such resection, an endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is traditionally performed. This is based primarily on prior experience with open medial maxilloethmoidectomy. It is unclear whether a concurrent DCR during endoscopic medial maxillectomy is necessary, however. This study was designed to compare patients un

INTRODUCTION: The sinonasal tract is an area that may be affected by various types of neoplastic lesions with more variety than what is encountered in other parts of the upper airway and food passage.
CASE REPORT: An elderly gentleman of 65 years complained of nose block on both sides for 3 months. On examination, he had firm polypoidal masses arising from the middle meatus and septum on both sides. Computed tomography scan of the sinuses revealed polypoidal mucosal thickening in bilateral sinuses with bilateral concha bullosa. The patient underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery with th

Paranasal sinus cancers are rare, aggressive tumours that are usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. They differ from other upper aerodigestive tract tumours in terms of risk factors (wood dust exposure) and premalignant lesions (inverted papillomas). The diagnosis should be suspected in the presence of unilateral and continuous nasal sinus symptoms or bone lysis or a heterogeneous opacity on imaging. The definitive positive diagnosis is based on histological examination. Staging must comprise face, brain, neck and chest CT as well as face and brain MRI. Tumours are stage T3-T4 in two-thirds

Isolated sphenoid lesions are rare. It is likely that isolated sphenoid sinus disease is underreported for a number of reasons. First, the presenting symptoms are often nonspecific; second, the inaccessibility of the sinus precludes optimal physical examination; and third, before the advent of CT and MRI scanning, radiologic examination of the sinus was inadequate. Endoscopic evaluation and current imaging techniques with CT or MRI have contributed to an increase in diagnosis of these lesions. Twenty-one patients with isolated sphenoid lesions that I treated in a 4-year period are presented. T

BACKGROUND: Transnasal approaches to the anterolateral maxillary sinus and infratemporal fossa are challenging with traditional endoscopic techniques and instrumentation. Additional access in the anterior and lateral direction can be obtained with modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (MEMM) or total endoscopic medial maxillectomy (TEMM) or via a transseptal approach. Alternatively, we have used a septal dislocation technique to help access these areas. Access to these areas may be necessary for treatment of inverted papilloma, schwannoma, and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas. The aim o

Schneiderian papilloma (SP) are uncommon tumors with malignant transformation even less common. The histologic criteria to define malignant transformation are not well developed nor is the immunohistochemical profile reported in a large series of carcinomas. 20 cases of malignant transformation of SP included 7 females and 13 males, aged 38-86 years (mean 60.7 years). Patients presented most frequently with a mass (n = 11) and obstructive symptoms (n = 7), present for 38.7 months (mean). Most patients had no previous history of SP (n = 13); metachronous carcinoma was identified in 7 patients a

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) in the sinonasal tract is very rare, with few cases documented in the literature. Myoepithelioma is a recognized variant of PA characterized by predominant myoepithelial differentiation and the absence of ductal structures.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old man presented with a right-sided sinonasal mass. Cross-sectional imaging revealed a lesion originating from the right maxillary sinus and extending into the ipsilateral nasal cavity and nasopharynx. An initial biopsy favored a diagnosis of inverted papilloma, and the patient subsequently underwent endo

A variety of malignancies can be found in the sinonasal tract including the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and skull base. Many of these are attributed to viruses, for example, carcinomas with the presence of transcriptionally active high-risk human papillomavirus, as well as Epstein-Barr virus associated malignant lymphoepithelial carcinoma and haematolymphoid neoplasias. Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant tumor of the olfactory fossa with an unknown etiology. We present the first comprehensive virus study of ONB. By targeted next-generation sequencing for 41 DNA viruses, we

DEK::AFF2 fusion carcinoma is an emerging sinonasal tract non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) variant, characterized by deceptively bland morphology, frequent local recurrence, and metastasis in a subset of cases. Owing to its histologic mimicry, misdiagnosis remains common. We report a case of DEK::AFF2 neoplasm exhibiting malignant histological evidence strictly confined to the pulmonary “metastatic” lesion despite persistent benign radiologic and pathologic features in six nasal cavity tumor resections over two decades in a 35-year-old male. The patient was initially diagnosed wi

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is a benign lesion of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Here, we report the clinicopathological characteristics of REAH identified in 2065 cases with nasal/paranasal polypoid lesions treated with endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) at our hospital from 2008 to 2021. Cases including the olfactory area were reviewed and 50 patients of REAH were identified pathologically (50/2065, 2.4%). The average age was 58.9 years old and the male/female ratio was 45/5. Grossly, REAH showed a whitish surface and elastic firm consistency. The histopathologic

OBJECTIVE: Nested variant is bland-looking but aggressive subtype of urothelial carcinoma (UC). Cases having significant muscle invasion do not cause problems but small and superficial biopsies may be challenging due to morphological similarities between nested variant urothelial carcinoma and benign urothelial lesions.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We studied Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT-1), which is an integral membrane protein providing glucose pass through plasma membrane down its concentration gradient, to see if it is useful for the differential diagnosis. Twenty five cases of nested variant urot

Management of malignant urothelial tumors is often associated with extended costly treatments, some with significant morbidity. Advanced tumors are treated with radical cystectomy with neoadjuvant or adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy. Over and under interpretation of histological findings from biopsies and transurethral resections of urothelial lesions may either incur treatments with significant side effects or miss a possible window of cure, respectively. Herein we reflect our approaches and common diagnostic challenges of urothelial tumors and their mimickers, and highlight the diagnostic

The present study examined the clinico-pathological profile of sinonasal masses in patients attending an Ear Nose Throat clinic of a rural tertiary care hospital of western Maharashtra in India, between May 2007 to June 2009. During the study period, 112 patients presented with sinonasal masses (male 68, female 44; age group 8-70 years). Nasal polyploid masses were non-neoplastic in 80 (71.4%) subjects, and neoplastic in 32 (28.6%) cases. Nasal obstruction was the most common (97.3%) presenting complaint, followed by rhinorrhoea (49.1%), hyposmia (31.25%), intermittent epistaxis (17.9%), heada

A series of 23 patients with sphenoid disease were seen between 1992 and 1997. The most common symptom was headache. This headache was found to be nonspecific. Cranial nerve abnormalities were found in two patients. The different types of radiolographic images were analyzed, and compared with the surgical diagnosis. Twenty-one patients underwent surgical exploration by intranasal endoscopic sphenoidotomy. This approach allowed drainage and inspection of the sinus.
