A nationwide (Taiwan Province not included) survey of the distribution of human parasites in China during 1988-1992 was conducted under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Health, with stratified masses randomly sampling. A total of 2,848 pilot sites in 726 counties with a population of 1,477,742 were surveyed, according to unified standard, unified diagnostic method and control quality. Paragonimiasis westermani, or Oriental lung fluke, is a common parasitic zoonosis, which is acquired from eating the flesh of wild boar or freshwater crabs. After being ingested by humans, the larvae of P. westermani migrate across small intestinal mucosa into the intra-abdominal space, and then finally into to the pleural space and lung parenchyma. We report a chronic cerebral paragonimiasis from a 41-year-old Korean man who complains a headache and weakness of left motor neuron components. Magnetic resonance images of the brain revealed conglomerates of multiple ring-like enhancements in temporo-occipital and frontal lobes of the right hemisphere. Five newly discovered endemic foci for paragonimiasis in Colombia are described for the first time. The disease was diagnosed in 24 people from the Embera Indian communities located at the Colombian Pacific Coast and investigated in 1993-98. We also describe the clinical, epidemiological and treatment response aspects. In these foci an Aroapyrgus sp. snail different from A. colombiensis was found to be the first intermediate host, and the crab Hypolobocera emberarum nsp. the second intermediate host.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the soluble antigens of different developmental stages of Pagumogonimus skrjabini and develop a specific and sensitive serodiagnostic method for pagumogonimiasis.
METHODS: The soluble antigens of P. skrjabini of various stages were separated by SDS-PAGE. The specific antigen of the adult fluke was recognized immunologically by immunoblot assay. The protein bands between 10-30 kDa purified by SDS-PAGE and electrophoretic elution were used in dot-ELISA.

A 73-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of left chest pain, left pleural effusion and peripheral blood eosinophilia. Paragonimiasis is a harmful food-borne zoonosis caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus. The disease is found on most continents, several million people are at risk of infection, and it is a re-emerging disease in developing countries. The gold standard for diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis requires the finding of eggs in sputa and/or fecal samples.
