Children's experience of loss by parental migration in inner-city Jamaica.

Migratory separation, when parents migrate and leave their children behind, was investigated in a case-control sample of 9- to 10-year-olds living in inner-city communities in Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica (N = 54). Data analyses using descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations showed that children's reactions to their parents' migration were directly related to poor school performance and psychological difficulties. Additionally, being currently exposed to violence in the home and/or community was significantly associated with high scores on a measure of grief intensity. "Protective"

Neurogenomics and the role of a large mutational target on rapid behavioral change.

BACKGROUND: Behavior, while complex and dynamic, is among the most diverse, derived, and rapidly evolving traits in animals. The highly labile nature of heritable behavioral change is observed in such evolutionary phenomena as the emergence of converged behaviors in domesticated animals, the rapid evolution of preferences, and the routine development of ethological isolation between diverging populations and species. In fact, it is believed that nervous system development and its potential to evolve a seemingly infinite array of behavioral innovations played a major role in the successful dive

Prenatal exposure to cigarettes in infants with obstructive sleep apneas.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of prenatal smoking on infant respiratory behavior during sleep. METHODS: A questionnaire concerning family habits and infants' history was completed for 550 healthy infants before a 9-hour night polysomnographic study. Because the data for 41 infants were not available for analysis, 509 subjects were studied: 115 were newborns evaluated within 1 week after birth, and 394 were healthy infants admitted at 11 weeks of life (range 5 to 29 weeks) after various research protocols. RESULTS: According to the smoking frequency of the mothers during pregnancy, the

Perceived Healthcare Discrimination and Its Impact on Mistrust and Delayed Care Among Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adults in Spain.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals face discrimination in health care, compromising both well-being and access to services. Such experiences may foster expectations of mistreatment and mistrust of health care professionals, contributing to delays in care with potentially adverse consequences. This study examined perceived discrimination, mental and physical health, trust in providers, and care-seeking behavior among young adults in Spain, comparing SGM participants with their cisgender heterosexual peers. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 217 participants (M = 21.5 a

Sperm length and seminal fluid proteins promote male reproductive success in Drosophila melanogaster.

Spermatozoal morphology varies widely within and among species, often corresponding to the shape of the female sperm storage organs in ways that can impact fertilization. To understand genetic mechanisms of sperm length variation, we compared gene expression patterns in the testes of Drosophila melanogaster males that produce either long or short sperm. We found that genes upregulated in long sperm testes are enriched for long noncoding RNAs and seminal fluid proteins (Sfps). Transferred to the female during mating, Sfps are secreted by the male accessory glands and affect female remating rate

Genotype-phenotype characteristics of 57 patients with Prader-Willi syndrome: a single-center experience from Turkey.

OBJECTIVES: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare and complex genetic disorder caused by the loss of expression of the paternal copy of the imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-q13. A variety of findings have been reported on the phenotypic differences between the genetic subtypes of PWS. This article compares the clinical findings of 57 PWS patients by genetic subtype and explores possible associations in this context. METHODS: Methylation‑specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and single nucleotide polymorphism microarrays were used to diagnose deletion and uniparental dis

Distinct promoter regions of the oxytocin receptor gene are hypomethylated in Prader-Willi syndrome and in Prader-Willi syndrome associated psychosis.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a loss of usually paternally expressed, maternally imprinted genes located on chromosome 15q11-q13. Individuals with PWS display a specific behavioral phenotype and have a higher susceptibility than the general population for certain psychiatric conditions, especially psychosis. An impairment of the oxytocin system has been described in Prader-Willi syndrome, but has not yet been investigated in detail on the epigenetic level. Recent studies have pointed out altered methylation patterns of the oxytocin receptor gene (O

[Preconception reproductive health and birth outcome cohort in Chongqing: the cohort profile].

Birth cohort is an important platform to study the effect of early-life exposure on health outcome, but large cohorts to investigate the effect of preconception exposure, especially paternal exposure, on reproductive health and birth outcome are limited. The Preconception Reproductive Health and Birth Outcome Cohort (PREBIC) is a prospective birth cohort study which pays equal attention to the contribution of environmental, psychological, behavioral as well as other factors to reproductive health and adverse birth outcomes in both men and women in Chongqing, China. PREBIC started in 2019 and p

EFFECT OF GROWTH HORMONE THERAPY IN CHILDREN WITH PRADER-WILLI SYNDROME - OUR FIRST EXPERIENCES.

- Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the most common cause of morbid obesity in childhood. It is the consequence of the lack of expression of genes on the paternally inherited 15q11.2-q13 region. Hyperphagia, obesity, short stature, psychomotor retardation and deterioration of behavior predominate in clinical presentation. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy, along with restriction of caloric intake, has become the mainstay in the management of PWS patients. Anthropometric parameters (height, body mass index (BMI)), therapy effect on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and occurrence of

Father Loss and Child Telomere Length.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Father loss during childhood has negative health and behavioral consequences, but the biological consequences are unknown. Our goal was to examine how father loss (because of separation and/or divorce, death, or incarceration) is associated with cellular function as estimated by telomere length. METHODS: Data come from the 9-year follow-up of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a birth cohort study of children in 20 large American cities (N = 2420). Principal measures are as follows: salivary telomere length (sTL), mother reports of father loss, and poly

Dysfunctional core beliefs, perceived parenting behavior and psychopathology in gender identity disorder: A comparison of male-to-female, female-to-male transsexual and nontranssexual control subjects.

BACKGROUND: Research into the association between Gender Identity Disorder (GID) and psychological disturbances as well as on its relation with parenting experiences yielded mixed results, with different patterns for Male-to-Female (MF) and Female-to-Male (FM) transsexual subjects. We investigated vulnerability markers of maladjustment and their possible origins in MF and FM transsexuals by examining maladaptive core beliefs and parenting behaviors thought to be specifically related to them. METHODS: Dysfunctional core beliefs, parenting experiences and psychiatric symptoms were assessed by t

Global deficits in development, function, and gene expression in the endocrine pancreas in a deletion mouse model of Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a multisystem disorder caused by genetic loss of function of a cluster of imprinted, paternally expressed genes. Neonatal failure to thrive in PWS is followed by childhood-onset hyperphagia and obesity among other endocrine and behavioral abnormalities. PWS is typically assumed to be caused by an unknown hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, but the underlying pathogenesis remains unknown. A transgenic deletion mouse model (TgPWS) has severe failure to thrive, with very low levels of plasma insulin and glucagon in fetal and neonatal life prior to and following onse

Mediational links among parenting styles, perceptions of parental confidence, self-esteem, and depression on alcohol-related problems in emerging adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is often found to be comorbid with alcohol-related problems. Parental overprotection, which may be of particular importance during emerging adulthood, has been linked to internalizing symptoms in offspring. This article evaluates the impact of parenting styles and parental confidence in their offspring on an internalizing pathway to alcohol-related problems through self-esteem and depression. METHOD: Mediational links were tested among parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive), parental confidence (overprotection, autonomy), self-esteem, depression, and

Reproduction in free-ranging Propithecus verreauxi: estrus and the relationship between multiple partner matings and fertilization.

Female sifaka mate selectively with one or more resident and/or non-resident males during the breeding season. Various adaptive explanations have been advanced to explain why female primates mate with multiple males including that 1) females seek to confuse paternity and thereby forestall male infanticide and/or ensure male infant care or 2) females seek to ensure fertilization. Assessing the power of fertilization insurance to explain mating patterns in females requires information on the temporal relationship between mating and ovarian hormones. The hormonal correlates of reproduction and ma

Is It Time to Abandon the Kidney-Centered View on the Origin of Primary Hypertension?

Traditionally, the kidney has been thought to play a key role in the development of hypertension. Disturbed sodium regulatory pathways can lead to primary hypertension, with abnormalities in the pressure-natriuresis mechanism contributing to its onset. An adverse intrauterine environment and postnatal stressors can affect nephron number, further linking renal development to hypertension risk. The development of hypertension may, however, also be influenced by alternative factors beyond the kidney. Monogenic diseases and polygenic risk scores are associated with hypertension development. Epigen

The Mediation of Care and Overprotection between Parent-Adolescent Conflicts and Adolescents' Psychological Difficulties during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Which Role for Fathers?

BACKGROUND: There is evidence of a significant raise in youths' emotional and behavioral difficulties during the pandemic. Only a few studies have addressed parent-adolescent conflict, and none investigated the possible mediating effect of parenting in the association between conflicts with parents and adolescents' symptoms. This study aimed at investigating youths' psychological symptoms during the pandemic, focusing on the predicting effect of parent-adolescent conflict. The mediating role of care and overprotection was also explored, considering whether adolescent gender moderated this medi
