Space maintenance and endodontic follow-up: case reports.

Early extraction of carious primary teeth may result in functional and/or loss of arch length problems. That is the rationale behind root canal therapy and/or space maintenance after the extraction of pulpally involved primary molars. What follows is a short radiographic and photographic history of unexpected results in well established and routine space therapy treatments.

Changes in Management Preference of Deep Carious Lesions and Exposed Pulps: Questionnaire Studies with a 10-Year Interval among Dentists in Lithuania.

We aimed to investigate changes in management preferences for deep carious lesions and pulps exposed during carious tissue removal that occurred during the last 10 years and identify associated dentists' background factors. The data were collected among dentists registered with the Lithuanian Dental Chamber at two time points using a similar questionnaire. In 2011, 400 randomly selected dentists received a questionnaire by mail, and 153 (38.3%) responded. In 2021, an electronic invitation to an online questionnaire was sent to all members of the Lithuanian Dental Chamber, and 213 (8.9%) dentis

Molecular biomarkers for objective assessment of symptomatic pulpitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory biomarkers are potentially useful targets for pulpal diagnostic tests that can identify pulp status and predict vital pulp treatment (VPT) outcome, however, their accuracy is unknown. OBJECTIVES: (1) Calculate sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) of previously investigated pulpitic biomarkers; (2) Determine if biomarker levels discriminate between clinical diagnoses of pulpitis based on the presence or absence of spontaneous pain (3) Evaluate if biomarker level can predict VPT outcome. METHODS: Searches: PubMed/MEDLINE, Ovid SP, Cochrane Central R

An endodontic-periodontal lesion with primary periodontal disease: a case report on its bacterial profile.

The microflora in the periodontal pockets can affect the dental pulp and cause endodontic-periodontal lesions or retrograde pulpitis. Here we report an endodontic-periodontal lesion together with its bacterial profile. The lesion occurred in the maxillary right first molar of a 40-year-old woman who presented at our hospital complaining of a violent toothache since the previous night. Clinically, the tooth was caries-free and an electric pulp test showed it to be vital. The tooth showed signs of advanced periodontitis and the periodontal pocket was deep, reaching the apex of the palatal root.

Intravital treatment of the pulp with simultaneous laser biostimulation.

The aim of the study was clinical and radiological evaluation of the pulp treatment using direct capping and amputation under anaesthesia with simultaneous laser biostimulation. Thirty procedures were performed using laser and thirty-six without it. In all cases non-setting Ca(OH)2 was applied as a biological dressing. The results obtained provide justification for the application of laser biostimulation to biological treatment of the pulp.

Treatment success of carious primary molars with marginal breakdown: comparison of three treatment approaches in a real-world clinical setting (using decision tree analysis).

OBJECTIVES: Treatment of carious primary molars is always indicated, especially on young children; however, there are no clear guidelines that precisely explain the best treatment approach for Class II carious molars with marginal breakdown (International Caries Detection and Assessment System [ICDAS] 5). The objective of this prospective observational clinical study was to assess the efficacy of three restorative techniques in treating ICDAS 5 Class II lesions in primary molars: compomer fillings (CF), preformed metal crowns (PMC), and pulpotomy and conventional preformed metal crowns (PMC+P)

Inflammatory lesions of the tooth pulp induce changes in brainstem neurons of the rat trigeminal subnucleus oralis.

Neuroplastic changes are known to occur in the CNS in response to injury of peripheral nerves. Previous investigation has demonstrated neuroplasticity in second-order neurons of the subnucleus oralis (SO) of the trigeminal (V) nuclear complex in association with aseptic injury to the tooth pulp. A question arises, therefore, as to whether similar changes occur in response to injury associated with inflammation induced by tooth pulp infection. The effects of tooth pulp infection on the mechanoreceptive fields (RFs) of SO neurons were examined in rats. Infection was established by exposure and r

Re-reattachment of a fractured maxillary central incisor: a case study.

There has been a rise in incidence of dental trauma and crown fractures as reported in the literature. Children and teenagers are the most affected age groups, and the maxillary central incisors are the teeth most often affected. This article discusses reattachment techniques for the restoration of fractured teeth when the tooth fragment is recovered after a traumatic dental injury. This particular case study reports re-reattachment of a previously fractured and reattached tooth fragment.

Prostaglandin E2 and treatment outcome in pulp therapy of primary molars with carious exposures.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis is an ocular immune disease which affects the conjunctiva, eyelids, and cornea. Growing evidence implicates the gut microbiota in balancing and modulating immunity response, and in the pathogenesis of allergic disease. As a result, gut microbial imbalance could be a useful indicator for allergic conjunctivitis. From the perspective of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM), clarifying the role of gut microbial imbalance in the development of allergic conjunctivitis could provide a window of opportunity for primary prediction, targeted preve

Endodontic interappointment flare-ups: a prospective study of incidence and related factors.

Severe pain and/or swelling following a root canal treatment appointment are serious sequelae. Information varies or is incomplete as to the incidence of these conditions and related factors. In this study, data were collected at root canal treatment appointments on demographics, pulp/periapical diagnoses, presenting symptoms, treatment procedures, and number of appointments. Patients that then experienced a flare-up (a severe problem requiring an unscheduled visit and treatment) had the correlating factors examined. Statistical determinations were by chi-square analysis with significance at 0

Postoperative pain incidence related to the type of emergency treatment of symptomatic pulpitis.

Some endodontic emergencies occur as a result of attempts to relieve symptoms of pulpitis. The aim of this study was to identify any predictor of postoperative pain in a patient population treated by dental students. Patients who reported for treatment of symptomatic pulpitis were subjected to three different emergency treatment regimens. Clinical data was collected on those patients who reported in the emergency service with severe postoperative pain within 24 hours of emergency endodontic treatment. Statistical analysis of these data suggested that the type of endodontic emergency procedure

An investigation into dentists' management methods of dental trauma to maxillary permanent incisors in Victoria, Australia.

Trauma to anterior teeth in children could become a long-term problem to dental health. To a large extent, the management actions of the dentists involved will determine the clinical outcome and, in turn, these actions will be related to their levels of knowledge. The aim of this study was to investigate dentists' knowledge of managing traumatic injuries to maxillary permanent incisors in children. A self-completion questionnaire containing 19 questions on management methods of treating dental trauma was mailed to 693 dentists in Victoria, Australia. The response rate achieved was 61%. This su
