Effects of stocking rate on grazing behavior, nitrogen and energy metabolism, and greenhouse gas emissions of Simmental cattle in saline meadow.

A rational stocking rate balances grassland ecosystems and improves livestock productivity. This study examined how stocking rates affect Simmental cattle in saline meadow through analyses of grazing behavior, nitrogen (N) and energy metabolism, and greenhouse gas emissions, to inform targeted livestock management. A total of 24 male Simmental cattle (3-month-old, 104.72 ± 1.78 kg) were selected and assigned to stocking rates of 0.66, 1.33, and 2.66 cattle/ha (8 cattle/treatment). The experiment adopted a rotational grazing system, with three paddocks as replicates for each stocking rate, and

The influence of resveratrol and β-Hydroxy-β-methyl butyric acid supplementation alone or in combination on the development and health of the duodenum in Tibetan sheep.

Resveratrol (RES) and β-Hydroxy-β-methyl butyric acid (HMB) have been shown to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effect as well as influence intestinal microbiota composition in monogastric animal. However, the mechanism by which RES and HMB regulate duodenal function in ruminants remains unclear. In this study, the effects of RES and HMB on the development and health of the duodenum in Tibetan sheep were investigated. A total of 120 early weaned Tibetan rams with similar initial body weight (15.5 ± 0.14 kg) were selected and randomly allocated into 4 groups. Each group received a basal die

Effects of wood kraft pulp as a partial replacement for roughage on rumen fermentation and productivity in dairy cows.

In this study, we evaluated the partial replacement of roughage with wood kraft pulp (KP) on rumen fermentation and productivity of dairy cows. Eighteen cows were divided into control and KP groups. The KP group started adaptation to KP 3 weeks before calving; after calving, they were fed a total mixed ration for 12 weeks, wherein 18% Timothy hay was replaced with KP. The dry matter intake, body weight, and milk yield and composition were similar in the control and KP groups. The average daily rumen pH was higher with KP feeding, and the average daily ruminal temperature remained lower at 16 d

Analysis of Host Jejunum Transcriptome and Associated Microbial Community Structure Variation in Young Calves with Feed-Induced Acidosis.

Diet-induced acidosis imposes a health risk to young calves. In this study, we aimed to investigate the host jejunum transcriptome changes, along with its microbial community variations, using our established model of feed-induced ruminal acidosis in young calves. Eight bull calves were randomly assigned to two diet treatments beginning at birth (a starch-rich diet, Aci; a control diet, Con). Whole-transcriptome RNA sequencing was performed on the jejunum tissues collected at 17 weeks of age. Ribosomal RNA reads were used for studying microbial community structure variations in the jejunum. A

Long-Term Recording of Reticulo-Rumen Myoelectrical Activity in Sheep by a Telemetry Method.

The reticulum and rumen are considered a single functional unit (the reticulo-rumen) with regards to myoelectrical and contractile activities. The specialized contractions of the reticulo-rumen provide constant mixing of partially digested material (cycle A), its flow into the omasum during eructation (cycle B), and regurgitation-rumination (cycle C). This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of electromyography (EMG) registered by a long-term telemetry method for assessment of the basic reticulo-rumen myoelectrical activity in sheep, to develop the effective recognition of the reticulo-

Digestion and absorption of lipids and bile acids in sheep fed stearic acid, oleic acid, or tristearin.

Sheep were fed diets containing 7.5% added stearic acid, oleic acid, or tristearin for 21 days. In addition, 50 microCi/kg cerium-141 was included for the last 10 days on experimental diets as an unabsorbed reference substance. In the rumen dietary triglycerides were approximately 50% hydrolyzed, and hydrogenation resulted in saturation of the free fatty acid fraction. Some net synthesis of phospholipids, presumably microbial phospholipids, occurred in the rumen. In the intestine immediately distal to the pylorus, extensive secretion of bile acids, cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides, fr

Effects of breed, diet and sex on the alkaline phosphatase activity in walls of the bovine rumen and abomasum.

Alkaline phosphatase (APase) activity in tissue samples, with adherent bacteria, was measured from two sites in the rumen and from two sites in the abomasum of 57 yearling Angus and Hereford bulls and heifers fed a high or a low energy diet. In the rumen, APase activity was higher at the caudoventral blind sac than at the dorsal sac in animals of both breeds fed the high energy diet and in Angus bulls fed the low energy diet, but the reverse was observed in Hereford bulls fed the low-energy diet (P less than .01). In the abomasum, APase levels were higher for bulls than heifers (P less than .0

Replacing hexane with 2-methyloxolane for defatting soybean meal fed to dairy cows: Effects on ruminal and milk fatty acid profiles and health indicators.

Replacing hexane with 2-methyloxolane (MeOx) for defatting soybean meal (SBM) requires adaptations of the SBM production process. These modifications may increase the concentration of Maillard reaction products and reduce the residual oil content in MeOx-defatted SBM compared with hexane-defatted SBM. In addition, despite desolventization, solvent residues may still be present in the SBM when fed to livestock. This study aims to ensure that the replacement of hexane with MeOx for defatting SBM does not affect the ruminal and milk fatty acid profiles nor the liver activity, liver functionality,

Inclusion of dry or wet fiber plus solubles or high protein distillers grains to replace flint corn, whole cottonseed, and soybean meal in diets for finishing Nellore bulls.

The objective was to evaluate the inclusion of three corn ethanol byproducts in finishing cattle diets: high protein distillers grain (HPDG) was used as a source of protein in the diet to entirely replace whole cottonseed and soybean meal, dry fiber plus solubles (DFS) and wet fiber plus solubles (WFS) were used as energy-protein sources in the diet to replace a portion of the corn and entirely replace whole cottonseed and soybean meal from the conventional diet. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous with all diets containing 15% corn silage, 12% soybean hulls, 0.55 to 0.85% urea, and 1.8

Histamine promotes adhesion of neutrophils by inhibition of autophagy in dairy cows with subacute ruminal acidosis.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), a common digestive disease in dairy cows, is accompanied by systemic inflammation and high concentrations of histamine in blood. Histamine-induced neutrophil adhesion may play an important role in the systemic inflammation experienced by cows during SARA. Autophagy, an intracellular degradation system, regulates recycling of membrane-associated integrin and may be involved in histamine-induced adhesion of bovine neutrophils. In the present study, 20 multiparous mid-lactation cows (average body weight 486 ± 24 kg) fitted with ruminal fistula were assigned to a

Rates of particle size reduction and passage are faster for legume compared with cool-season grass, resulting in lower rumen fill and less effective fiber.

Effects of forage family on rates of particle size reduction in, and passage from, the rumen and the relationship of these effects with preliminary dry matter intake (pDMI) were evaluated using 13 ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows in a crossover design with a 14-d preliminary period and two 18-d treatment periods. During the preliminary period, pDMI of individual cows ranged from 19.6 to 29.5 kg/d (mean = 25.9 kg/d). Experimental treatments were diets containing either a) alfalfa silage (AL) or b) orchardgrass silage (OG) as the sole forage. Silages were chopped to 10-mm theore

Exploring the anatomy of Linguatula serrata using micro-computed tomography.

Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is an emerging tool in parasitology that can assist in analysing morphology and host-parasitic interactions. It is a non-destructive, cross-sectional imaging technique that offers good resolution and the ability to create three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions. Here, we used micro-CT to study Linguatula serrata, which is a zoonotic pentastome parasite that infects dogs and ruminants throughout the world. The aims of this study were to describe the internal and external anatomy of adult L. serrata specimens using micro-CT, and to describe and compare specime

The use of on-animal acoustical recording devices for studying animal behavior.

Audio recordings made from free-ranging animals can be used to investigate aspects of physiology, behavior, and ecology through acoustic signal processing. On-animal acoustical monitoring applications allow continuous remote data collection, and can serve to address questions across temporal and spatial scales. We report on the design of an inexpensive collar-mounted recording device and present data on the activity budget of wild mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) derived from these devices applied for a 2-week period. Over 3300 h of acoustical recordings were collected from 10 deer on their win

Effect of short-term abomasal corn starch infusions on postruminal fermentation and blood measures.

It is possible that some of the systemic responses to subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) may be caused by increased intestinal starch fermentation. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of abomasal infusion of up to 3 g of corn starch/kg body weight (approximately 1.6 kg of starch/d) on fecal measures of fermentation, plasma acute phase proteins, and white blood cell populations. Six ruminally cannulated cows in late lactation were randomly assigned to duplicate 3 × 3 Latin squares with 21-d periods. Cows were fed a 20.6% starch TMR twice daily and during the last 7 d of ea

The impact of protein fermentation on faecal consistency and intestinal permeability in pigs.

In vitro and in situ experiments, primarily conducted using human cells, have demonstrated that metabolites produced during protein fermentation can negatively affect intestinal health. However, in vivo research on their impact on intestinal health in pigs remains limited. Furthermore, data from ruminants suggest that the ratio of particle- and liquid-associated bacteria (PAB and LAB) may influence the production of protein-derived metabolites. In this experiment, 128 male pigs (mean BW ± SEM; 24 ± 1.5 kg) were assigned to diets using either bovine collagen (BC) or zein (ZE) as the only, low-d

Energy utilization in lactating Jersey cows consuming a mixture of dried distillers grains and solubles and straw replacing alfalfa hay.

Some forages require significant amounts of water to grow, causing the dairy industry to be dependent on a limited resource. Feeding crop residues and feed coproducts in dairy rations may represent opportunities when alfalfa is not readily available, and may reduce the industry's use of water. A study using indirect calorimetry and 12 multiparous lactating Jersey cows (BW = 447.5 ± 43.7 kg; DIM = 71 ± 11 d, mean ± SD) was conducted to determine the effect of feeding dried distillers grains and solubles (DDGS) and straw in replacement of alfalfa hay on milk production and energy utilization. Responses of nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation and microorganisms to different roughage of dairy buffaloes.

Dairy buffaloes are typically fed a high-forage, low-quality diet with high fiber. These conditions result in an inherent energy and protein inefficiency. In order to make full and rational use of feed resources and improve the production level and breeding efficiency of dairy buffaloes, the effects of various roughages on nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation parameters, and microorganisms in dairy buffaloes were studied in this experiment. Three ternary hybrid buffaloes, with an average body weight of 365 ± 22.1 kg, were selected and fitted with permanent rumen fistulas. They were fed

The burden of size and growth for the juveniles of large mammalian herbivores: Structural and functional constraints in the feeding biology of juveniles relative to adults in red kangaroos, Osphranter rufus.

Juvenile mammals in their postweaning developmental stages face many challenges in transitioning to adulthood. Among large grazing species such as ruminant bovids and cervids, an overarching challenge is acquiring and processing sufficient nutrients to survive and grow, with a gut that may not yet be fully developed. Marsupial kangaroos of Australia face similar challenges; they also digest vegetation by fermentation in a large foregut. In red kangaroos, Osphranter rufus (=Macropus rufus), the dominant species of Australia's arid interior, females may breed continuously; however, juvenile recr
