Screening red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) for possible viral causes of encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Next to various known infectious and non-infectious causes, the aetiology of non-suppurative encephalitis in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) often remains unclear. Known causes in foxes imply rabies, canine distemper, toxoplasmosis, Aujeszky's disease, as well as parvovirus, adenovirus, circovirus and flavivirus infections. In this study, particular attention was paid on bornaviruses, since red foxes are predators of bicoloured white-toothed shrews, a reservoir of Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1). In addition, foxes are known to be highly susceptible for viruses of the order Mononegavirale

Role of autonomic nervous system for development and suppression of motion sickness in Suncus murinus.

To clarify the role of autonomic nervous function in motion sickness, the effect of agents that act on the autonomic nervous system on the motion stimuli-induced emesis was studied in two strains of Suncus murinus (Jic:SUN-Her and Jic:SUN-Ler) with congenitally different sensitivity to veratrine sulfate. We demonstrated significant differences between the two strains in sensitivity to motion stimuli. Isoproterenol (2.5 mg kg(-1), s.c.) significantly prolonged the latency to the first emetic episode induced by motion stimuli and significantly decreased the number of emetic episodes in Jic:SUN-H

Cross-reaction of an anti-Cryptosporidium monoclonal antibody with sporocysts of Monocystis species.

The non-specific cross-reaction of a fluorescently labelled anti-Cryptosporidium monoclonal antibody was observed microscopically when testing faecal specimens from small mammals. The reactive particles were identified as sporocysts of the Gregarine family Monocystidae, and indicate that considerable care should be taken so that false positives are not recorded.

Endoparasites of the Eastern Rock Sengi (Elephantulus myurus) from South Africa.

The endoparasite fauna of the eastern rock sengi ( Elephantulus myurus Thomas and Schwann) was studied for the first time for any sengi species from September 2007 until August 2008 in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. From the 121 sengis examined, we recovered 11 endoparasite taxa, including 9 nematodes, 1 cestode family (Hymenolepididae), and 1 pentastomid species (Armillifer armillatus (Wyman, 1834)). The overall endoparasite prevalence was high, at 100%, and largely attributable to the nematode Maupasina weissi Seurat, 1913 , with only a single individual being parasite free. Despite t

Borrelia burgdorferi ospC heterogeneity among human and murine isolates from a defined region of northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania: lack of correlation with invasive and noninvasive genotypes.

B. burgdorferi invasiveness correlates with ospC genotype. To test this hypothesis and whether identical genotypes infect humans and small mammals in specific sites, B. burgdorferi ospC heterogeneity was tested among isolates from northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. Six culture-positive patients allowed collection of small animals from their properties, and spirochetes from animals trapped within 300 yards of each patient's home were isolated. 3' ospC sequences were compared to reference sequences. Of the 7 human and 15 mouse DNA templates that produced reliable sequences, all cluster

Mastomys natalensis (Smith, 1834) as a natural host for Schistosoma haematobium (Bilharz, 1852) Weinland, 1858 x Schistosoma bovis Sonsino, 1876 introgressive hybrids.

Cercarial emission of schistosomes is a determinant in the transmission to the definitive host and constitutes a good marker to identify which definitive host is responsible for transmission, mainly in introgressive hybridization situations. Our goal was to test the hypothesis that micro-mammals play a role in Schistosoma haematobium, S. bovis, and/or S. haematobium x S. bovis transmission. Small mammal sampling was conducted in seven semi-lacustrine villages of southern Benin. Among the 62 animals trapped, 50 individuals were investigated for Schistosoma adults and eggs: 37 Rattus rattus, 3 R

Functions of tonsils in the mucosal immune system of the upper respiratory tract using a novel animal model, Suncus murinus.

CONCLUSION: The human palatine tonsils and the nasopharyngeal tonsil were considered the defense mechanism against ingested or inhaled foreign pathogens. The current findings suggest that the tubal tonsils possess abilities of active transportation of foreign antigens, and will act as inductive and effector sites in the mucosal immune system. Our results also indicated a significant difference in roles of immune responses among individual tonsillar organs, suggesting functional sub-compartmentalization. OBJECTIVES: To address the function of tonsils in inducing local immune responses, we eval

Highly specific serological diagnosis of Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) and variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) encephalitis by novel antibody isotype assay with multiple viral antigens.

BACKGROUND: Human bornavirus encephalitis is an emerging, severe and nearly uniformly fatal zoonotic disease in Germany. The etiological pathogens so far encompass the Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) and the variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1). While BoDV-1 is at least harbored by the white-toothed shrew (Crocidura leucodon) as a natural reservoir and autochthonous in Germany, VSBV-1 has been detected in captive exotic squirrels with an unknown geographical origin. Clinically, a rapid progression is typical for both forms of bornavirus encephalitis, however, medical awareness is low, and

Evolution of neuronal cell classes and types in the vertebrate retina.

The basic plan of the retina is conserved across vertebrates, yet species differ profoundly in their visual needs1. Retinal cell types may have evolved to accommodate these varied needs, but this has not been systematically studied. Here we generated and integrated single-cell transcriptomic atlases of the retina from 17 species: humans, two non-human primates, four rodents, three ungulates, opossum, ferret, tree shrew, a bird, a reptile, a teleost fish and a lamprey. We found high molecular conservation of the six retinal cell classes (photoreceptors, horizontal cells, bipolar cells, amacrine

Co-Radiation of Leptospira and Tenrecidae (Afrotheria) on Madagascar.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira that are maintained in the kidney lumen of infected animals acting as reservoirs and contaminating the environment via infected urine. The investigation of leptospirosis through a One Health framework has been stimulated by notable genetic diversity of pathogenic Leptospira combined with a high infection prevalence in certain animal reservoirs. Studies of Madagascar's native mammal fauna have revealed a diversity of Leptospira with high levels of host-specificity. Native rodents, tenrecids, and bats shelter several distinct

Chevrier's Field Mouse (Apodemus chevrieri) and Père David's Vole (Eothenomys melanogaster) in China Carry Orthohepeviruses that form Two Putative Novel Genotypes Within the Species Orthohepevirus C.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the prototype of the family Hepeviridae and the causative agent of common acute viral hepatitis. Genetically diverse HEV-related viruses have been detected in a variety of mammals and some of them may have zoonotic potential. In this study, we tested 278 specimens collected from seven wild small mammal species in Yunnan province, China, for the presence and prevalence of orthohepevirus by broad-spectrum reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. HEV-related sequences were detected in two rodent species, including Chevrier's field mouse (Apodemus chevrieri, family Muridae) and P

Borrelia infection in small mammals in West Africa and its relationship with tick occurrence inside burrows.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a zoonotic disease caused by several Borrelia species transmitted to humans by Ornithodoros tick vectors. In West Africa, Borrelia crocidurae is a common cause of disease in many rural populations. Small mammals act as reservoirs of infection. We report here the results of surveys that investigated the occurrence of B. crocidurae infection in rodents and insectivores from eight countries of West and Central Africa. Animals were identified at the species level and tested for Borrelia either by examination of thick blood film, intra-peritoneal inoculation of

Central projection of proprioceptive afferents arising from maxillo-facial regions in some animals studied by HRP-labeling technique.

20 ICR mice (adult females) were used for analyzing the axonal projection of the trigeminal mesencephalic tract neurons and 10 Japanese shrew-moles for analyzing that of the snout proprioceptive neurons. The HRP-labeled axons were found to be ipsilaterally terminated in the trigeminal motor nucleus, supratrigeminal nucleus and trigeminal main and spinal tract nuclei, lateral pontine-medullary reticular formation, vagal dorsal motor and hypoglossal nuclei and the lamina V of the C2 spinal cord segments. No HRP-labeled axons were found in the facial and solitary nuclei and the cerebellum. Also,

Caught on camera: Field imagery reveals the unexpected importance of vertebrates for biological control of the banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus Col. Curculionidae).

Understanding of ecological interactions is necessary for the application of biological control. Banana is the second most produced fruit worldwide and the banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is the most important pest of banana and plantain. Its biological control remains challenging because of the robustness and cryptic behaviour of the adult and the hidden development of larval stages. Researchers therefore tend to favour conservation biological control of this pest. The commonly used methods for measuring the effects of natural enemies on the regulation of this pest focus on invertebrate

Localization of proprioceptive neurons innervating the muscle spindles of pig extraocular muscles studied by horseradish peroxidase labelling.

Each muscle of the extraocular muscles, containing abundant muscle spindles, was exposed to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on 8 young pigs (2-month-old, 20-30 kg in body weight, both sexes). The results obtained are follows: The HRP-labelled neurons innervating the superior rectus muscle were always found in a crescent ventro-medio-dorsal fashion in the most medial position of the contralateral oculomotor nucleus. The HRP-labelled cells for the medial rectus muscle appeared close to the superior rectus group in the ipsilateral nucleus. The labelled cells for the inferior rectus muscle appeared i

A decade of plague epidemiology and control in the western Usambara mountains, north-east Tanzania.

Outbreaks of human plague have been occurring in the Western Usambara mountains since 1980, involving many cases and deaths. Epidemiological surveys and control activities were carried out from June 1980 to May 1990. Rodents were trapped live, identified and serologically tested for plague, using the passive haemagglutination and passive haemagglutination inhibition tests. Rodent fleas were collected, processed, identified and counted. House fleas were caught with light traps and similarly treated. People and domestic carnivores were serologically tested for the disease. Various plague control

Borrelia burgdorferi in small mammal reservoirs in Kentucky, a traditionally non-endemic state for Lyme disease.

The incidence of tick-borne zoonoses such as Lyme disease has steadily increased in the southeastern United States. Southeastern states accounted for 1500 of over 28,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease reported in the United States during 2015. Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, is maintained in small mammal reservoirs and vectored to new hosts by ixodid ticks. This study examined ecological relationships of the B. burgdorferi/vector/reservoir system in order to understand the dynamics of Lyme disease risk in Kentucky. Small mammals were captured using live traps from N

Molecular and serological evidence of flea-associated typhus group and spotted fever group rickettsial infections in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular bacteria responsible for many febrile syndromes around the world, including in sub-Saharan Africa. Vectors of these pathogens include ticks, lice, mites and fleas. In order to assess exposure to flea-associated Rickettsia species in Madagascar, human and small mammal samples from an urban and a rural area, and their associated fleas were tested. RESULTS: Anti-typhus group (TGR)- and anti-spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR)-specific IgG were detected in 24 (39%) and 21 (34%) of 62 human serum samples, respectively, using indirect ELISAs, wi

Overview of Diagnostic Methods, Disease Prevalence and Transmission of Mpox (Formerly Monkeypox) in Humans and Animal Reservoirs.

Mpox-formerly monkeypox-is a re-emerging zoonotic virus disease, with large numbers of human cases reported during multi-country outbreaks in 2022. The close similarities in clinical symptoms that Mpox shares with many orthopoxvirus (OPXV) diseases make its diagnosis challenging, requiring laboratory testing for confirmation. This review focuses on the diagnostic methods used for Mpox detection in naturally infected humans and animal reservoirs, disease prevalence and transmission, clinical symptoms and signs, and currently known host ranges. Using specific search terms, up to 2 September 2022
