Oral health is dependent upon a thin mobile film of saliva on soft and hard tissues. Salivary proteins adhere to teeth to form the acquired enamel pellicle which is believed to protect teeth from acid erosion. This study investigated whether patients suffering diet-induced dental erosion had altered enamel pellicles. Thirty patients suffering erosion were compared to healthy age-matched controls. Subjects wore a maxillary splint holding hydroxyapatite and human enamel blocks for 1 h. The acquired enamel pellicle was removed from the blocks and compared to the natural incisor pellicle. BACKGROUND: A considerable number of agents are effective in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. This 6-week randomized clinical trial compares a dentifrice containing calcium sodium phosphosilicate to potassium nitrate and to a placebo.
METHODS: A total of 110 subjects (58 males and 52 females; aged 20 to 60 years) were entered into the study. The volunteers selected at baseline had a history of dentin hypersensitivity caused by gingival recession or cervical erosion. Patients were required to have at least two teeth with a visual analog scale score of > or =4 to be included in the stu

INTRODUCTION: The circumferential 2 mm ferrule during the fabrication of the crown is strongly advocated for the long-term clinical success. During the routine clinical practice, the dentist encounters the endodontically treated tooth (ETT) with inadequacy of the ferrule in some segment due to caries, abrasion, and erosions. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the consequence of inadequate segmental ferrule location on fracture strength of the root canal-treated anterior and posterior teeth.

BACKGROUND: Dentin hypersensitivity, often occurring after dental treatments or from erosive lesions, is a prevalent patient complaint. This study introduces a paste combining 8% L-arginine, calcium carbonate, and potassium nitrate to evaluate its impact on dentinal tubules occlusion, dentin permeability, and tooth sensitivity.
METHODS: Dentin surfaces from 24 third molars (thickness: 2 mm) were divided into two groups of 12. One received the experimental paste, while the other received a placebo without desensitizer. Permeability and sealing ability were assessed through scanning electron mi

BACKGROUND: A well-established link exists between eating disorders and oral health issues such as dental erosion, caries, and tooth loss. However, little is known about how to best provide dental care for individuals with eating disorders. Therefore, current guidelines often suggest delaying dental treatment until after medical rehabilitation. This study aimed to explore the dental care experiences of patients with eating disorders, with the objective of finding ways to improve dental care and support for this patient group throughout the disease.
METHODS: Ten women (average age 36.7 years;

BACKGROUND: Dental plaque associated gingivitis is a reversible inflammatory condition caused by accumulation and persistence of microbial biofilms (dental plaque) on the teeth. It is characterised by redness and swelling of the gingivae (gums) and a tendency for the gingivae to bleed easily. In susceptible individuals, gingivitis may lead to periodontitis and loss of the soft tissue and bony support for the tooth. It is thought that chlorhexidine mouthrinse may reduce the build-up of plaque thereby reducing gingivitis.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of chlorhexidine mouthrinse used

PURPOSE: Maxillary sinus marginal calcification (MSMC) is a novel radiological entity that closely mimics maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB), potentially leading to misdiagnosis and unwarranted endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). This study aimed to delineate the clinical and imaging features that distinguish MSMC from MSFB, propose diagnostic criteria to aid in accurate identification, and briefly explore its potential pathogenesis. METHODS: Thirteen patients with MSMC (diagnosed by imaging/pathology) and 26 with histopathologically confirmed MSFB were enrolled. Clinical data, imaging features an

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) plays a crucial role in head and neck (HN) cancer treatment. Nevertheless, it can lead to serious and challenging adverse events such as osteoradionecrosis (ORN). A preclinical rabbit model of irradiated bone and ORN is herein proposed, with the aim to develop a viable model to be exploited for investigating new therapeutic approaches.
METHODS: Nine New Zealand white rabbits were irradiated using a single beam positioned to the left of the mandible and directed perpendicular to the left mandible. A 10 × 10 mm2 region of interest (ROI) located below the first molar t

Exposure of dentin tubules due to loss of protective enamel (crown) and cementum (root) tissues as a result of erosion, mechanical wear, gingival recession, etc. has been the leading causes of dentin hypersensitivity. Despite being a widespread ailment, no permanent solution exists to address this oral condition. Current treatments are designed to alleviate the pain by either using desensitizers or blocking dentin tubules by deposition of minerals or solid precipitates, which often have short-lived effects. Reproducing an integrated mineral layer that occludes exposed dentin with concomitant p

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how persons with and in remission from an eating disorder experience their oral health is limited. Dental treatment in Sweden today is often postponed until medical rehabilitation has been completed, but this carries risks. For the patient, the risk is severely impaired oral health and additional suffering, and for both society and the patient, higher costs than might have been necessary.
METHODS: Ten female informants aged 21-51 years (mean age = 36.7, standard deviation 12.7) in remission from an eating disorder with a median duration of 12.5 (range 4-25) years of il

OBJECTIVES: The aging population is retaining more natural teeth, increasing the prevalence of exposed root surfaces. These surfaces are prone to abrasion, erosion, and biofilm accumulation, leading to tissue loss, hypersensitivity, and root caries. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the surface and mechanical properties of experimental resin coatings containing dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) and nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) following simulated toothbrushing, and (2) assess their antibacterial efficacy and protective effects compared with co

BACKGROUND: Enamel is the hardest and vastly mineralized structure of the human body. Inorganic salts make up the majority of it. Water and ions pass right through the enamel. The enamel undergoes demineralization and remineralization cycle throughout life. Recently, the interest in the development of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride remineralization technology has been increased leading to the development and reintroduction of various remineralizing agents such as fluoride, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF), nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA), xylitol, bioglass,

BACKGROUND: Intraoral scans (IOS) provide three-dimensional images with approximate true colors representing a possible tool in teledentistry for remote examination. The aim of the present cross-sectional validation study was, therefore, to evaluate the levels of agreement between remote diagnoses derived from IOS and diagnoses based on clinical examinations for assessing dental and periodontal conditions.
METHODS: The test sample comprised 10 patients representing different clinical conditions. Following the acquisition of IOS (Trios, 3Shape), a full-mouth dental and periodontal examination
