Reducing Body Image-Related Distress in Women With Breast Cancer Using a Structured Online Writing Exercise: Results From the My Changed Body Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose Breast cancer treatment adverse effects result in one in three survivors experiencing body image-related distress (BID) that negatively impacts on a woman's ability to recover after cancer and into survivorship. My Changed Body (MyCB) is a Web-based psychological intervention to alleviate BID and improve body appreciation in survivors of breast cancer (BCSs) through a single-session, self-compassion focused writing activity. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the impact of MyCB on BID and body appreciation in BCSs. The moderating effect of lymphedema status (affected or unaffec

Sudden Gains During Patient-Directed Expressive Writing Treatment Predicts Depression Reduction in Women with History of Childhood Sexual Abuse: Results from a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Sudden gains are large reductions in symptoms measured in a single between-session interval and are positively associated with long-term treatment outcomes. To date, sudden gains have mostly been observed in therapist-directed psychotherapies. There are currently mixed findings surrounding the mechanisms underlying sudden gains, with some support for a cognitive mechanism and some support for therapist characteristics such as the therapeutic alliance. In this study of 77 female survivors of childhood sexual abuse, sudden gains in trauma symptoms were found in a randomized clinical trial of a p

Intraductal breast carcinoma. Review of a multicenter series of 350 cases. Coordinating Center and Writing Committee of FONCAM (National Task Force for Breast Cancer), Italy.

A multicenter series of 350 intraductal breast cancers (DCIS) is reported. Mammography was the most sensitive test but suspicion arose only at palpation in 13% of cases whereas in 10% of cases biopsy was recommended for a benign lesion and DCIS was an unexpected finding. Mammography, physical examination and cytology must be combined to achieve optimal sensitivity. Systematic biopsy of apparently benign masses would increase DCIS detection rates but the cost-effectiveness of such a policy is questionable. A trend of conservative surgery was evident over time (from 1968-79, 28%; 1985-1989, 50%)

From Moral Distress to Moral Resilience: How Reflective Writing-Based Ethics Education Supports Professional Identity Formation and Prevents Moral Injury Among First-Year Pharmacy Students.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) experienced by first-year pharmacy students and to examine how structured reflective writing facilitates recognition, processing, and meaning-making related to these events and supports moral resilience development. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with 39 first-year pharmacy students enrolled in a required ethics course at a military medical university in Taiwan. Students completed a structured four-prompt reflective writing exercise addressing ethical dilemmas, emotional responses, behavioral

A novel writing to dictation test to investigate lexical and sublexical processes: Italian normative data and preliminary clinical feasibility in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

Writing abilities can be interpreted within dual-route models, which distinguish lexical and sublexical processes. The present study aimed to validate a novel writing to dictation test to assess both lexical and sub-lexical spelling abilities in an Italian population. A sample of 392 healthy participants provided robust normative data, revealing significant effects of age, education, and sex on spelling performance. Test-retest analyses indicated satisfactory reliability and minimal learning effects. The clinical feasibility of the test was explored in patients with amnestic Mild Cognitive Imp

Online Writing Processes in Translating Cognition into Language and Transcribing Written Language by Stylus and Keyboard in Upper Elementary and Middle School Students With Persisting Dysgraphia or Dyslexia.

Participants in this study completed an on-line experiment in which they wrote essays by stylus or keyboard. Three translation measures (length of language burst, length of pauses, and rate of pausing) and four transcription measures (total words, total time, words/minute, and percent spelling errors) for composition were analyzed for two research aims. Research Aim 1 addressed whether upper elementary and middle school students with carefully diagnosed transcription disabilities (dysgraphia with impaired handwriting, n=18, or dyslexia with impaired spelling, n=20) showed significant differenc

Mirror writing ability is genetic and probably transmitted as a sex-linked dominant trait: it is hypothesised that mirror writers have bilateral language centres with a callosal interconnection.

Mirror writing is the ability to write from right to left, reversing each letter so that when held to a mirror the script appears normal. There is no information on the prevalence of this trait but a suggestion was received that it may be hereditary. A newspaper survey was carried out to discover the approximate prevalence and whether a hereditary factor is involved. The results indicated a prevalence of 1 in 6500. There is strong evidence that the trait is hereditary and is associated with non-right-handedness'. It is hypothesised that mirror writers may comprise a very small group of people

Strengthening data, analytic and scientific writing skills: Insights from working with 17 health and demographic surveillance system (HDSS) centres in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

In the ever-evolving landscape of global health, Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS) generate rare and valuable longitudinal data for understanding health and population dynamics and their determinants in low- and middle-income countries, where vital registration systems are often weak. However, the utility of HDSS centres relies heavily on the capabilities of those responsible for cleaning, describing and analysing the wealth of data they generate. This paper describes our targeted strategy for strengthening the capacity of personnel in HDSS research settings, particularly focu

Adults with dyslexia: how can they achieve academic success despite impairments in basic reading and writing abilities? The role of text structure sensitivity as a compensatory skill.

The aim of this study was to investigate (1) whether a sample of highly educated individuals with dyslexia living under optimal personal, educational, cultural, and socioeconomic conditions continues to display core deficits in reading and writing skills during adulthood (extending prior results in Dutch, English, Hebrew, and Spanish to the Portuguese writing system); (2) whether these individuals can compensate for the effects of persistent core deficits when reading complex academic texts; (3) which cognitive resources, such as reading strategies, are used as compensatory mechanisms; and (4)

"It's way more than just writing a prescription": A qualitative study of preferences for integrated versus non-integrated treatment models among individuals with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is offered in integrated treatment models addressing both substance use and other health conditions within the same system. This often includes offering medications for OUD in general medical settings. It remains uncertain whether integrated OUD treatment models are preferred to non-integrated models, where treatment is provided within a distinct treatment system. This study aimed to explore preferences for integrated versus non-integrated treatment models among people with OUD and examine what factors may influence preferences.

Relationships between Translation and Transcription Processes during fMRI Connectivity Scanning and Coded Translation and Transcription in Writing Products after Scanning in Children with and without Transcription Disabilities.

Students with transcription disabilities (dysgraphia/impaired handwriting, n = 13 or dyslexia/impaired word spelling, n = 16) or without transcription disabilities (controls) completed transcription and translation (idea generating, planning, and creating) writing tasks during fMRI connectivity scanning and compositions after scanning, which were coded for transcription and translation variables. Compositions in both groups showed diversity in genre beyond usual narrative-expository distinction; groups differed in coded transcription but not translation variables. For the control group specifi

South African guideline for management of ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack 2010: a guideline from the South African Stroke Society (SASS) and the SASS Writing Committee.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in South Africa. An increase in the burden of stroke is predicted as the population is undergoing a rapid epidemiological transition with increased exposure to, and development of, stroke risk factors, together with aging of the population. Objective. The objective was to update the guideline published in 2000, to place the recommendations within the current South African context, and to grade evidence according to the level of scientific rigour. RECOMMENDATIONS: Ideally, all patients with acute stroke should be managed in a dedica

Complete abolition of reading and writing ability with a third ventricle colloid cyst: implications for surgical intervention and proposed neural substrates of visual recognition and visual imaging ability.

We report a rare case of a patient unable to read (alexic) and write (agraphic) after a mild head injury. He had preserved speech and comprehension, could spell aloud, identify words spelt aloud and copy letter features. He was unable to visualise letters but showed no problems with digits. Neuropsychological testing revealed general visual memory, processing speed and imaging deficits. Imaging data revealed an 8 mm colloid cyst of the third ventricle that splayed the fornix. Little is known about functions mediated by fornical connectivity, but this region is thought to contribute to memory r

Narrowing the gap: the effects of an expressive writing intervention on perceptions of actual and ideal emotional support in women who have completed treatment for early stage breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of an expressive writing (EW) intervention on perceptions of emotional support in women completing treatment for early stage breast cancer. METHODS: Women were recruited to the study during their final week of treatment. Of 260 eligible patients, 104 (40%) agreed to participate, and 93 were randomised. Women in the writing group wrote for 20 min on four consecutive days. The control group received normal care. Women's perceptions of emotional support, quality of life (QOL), mood, and healthcare utilisation were assessed at baseline, 1 month, 3 months and 6 mon

Effects of a future work self writing intervention on ruminative career exploration and career decision-making difficulties among final-year university students: a three-arm randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Career decision-making difficulties are widespread among final-year university students entering an uncertain labor market. A salient future work self is commonly assumed to relieve them by motivating career exploration, yet associations between exploration and indecision remain inconsistent across studies. Drawing on identity development theory, we distinguish reflective from ruminative career exploration, defined as repetitive self-questioning that generates distress rather than usable information, and test whether a future work self writing intervention works by decreasing rum

Left bundle branch pacing cardiac resynchronization therapy vs biventricular pacing cardiac resynchronization therapy-time to write a requiem for biventricular pacing-cardiac resynchronization therapy.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) reduces heart failure (HF) hospitalizations and all-cause mortality in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction with left bundle branch (LBB) block. Biventricular pacing (BVP) is considered the gold standard for achieving CRT; however, approximately 30%-40% of patients do not respond to BVP-CRT. Recent studies have demonstrated that LBB pacing (LBBP) produces remarkable results in CRT. In this meta-analysis, LBBP-CRT showed better outcomes than conventional BVP-CRT, including greater QRS duration reduction and left ventricular ejection fraction im

"It's all very well reading the letters in the genome, but it's a long way to being able to write": Men's interpretations of undergoing genetic profiling to determine future risk of prostate cancer.

A family history of prostate cancer (PC) is one of the main risk factors for the disease. A number of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that confer small but cumulatively substantial risks of PC have been identified, opening the possibility for the use of SNPs in PC risk stratification for targeted screening and prevention in the future. The objective of this study was to explore the psychosocial impact of receiving information about genetic risk of PC. The participants were men who had a family history of PC and were enrolled in a screening study providing research genetic profili
