Neuroplasticity in the auditory system.

An increasing interest on neuroplasticity and nerve regeneration within the auditory receptor and pathway has developed in recent years. The receptor and the auditory pathway are controlled by highly complex circuits that appear during embryonic development. During this early maturation process of the auditory sensory elements, we observe the development of two types of nerve fibers: permanent fibers that will remain to reach full-term maturity and other transient fibers that will ultimately disappear. Both stable and transitory fibers however, as well as developing sensory cells, express, and

Smaller corpus callosum subregions containing motor fibers in schizophrenia.

Neuropsychological and neurophysiological studies provide evidence for abnormal interhemispheric communication in schizophrenia. These abnormalities may have a substrate in structural irregularities of the corpus callosum. This study investigated schizophrenia patients (n=27) and healthy comparison subjects (n=31). Global and regional measurements of the corpus callosum were acquired from one midsagittal SPGR slice. Eight subregions were approximately matched to fiber pathways from cortical regions. Overall effects of diagnosis [Wilks' Lambda F(8,46)=2.45, p=0.03] and diagnosis by age interact

Input-output organization of the rostral part of the dorsal premotor cortex, with special reference to its corticostriatal projection.

Until recently, little was known about the rostral part of the dorsal premotor cortex (PMdr). In the present study, somatotopical representations of the PMdr were electrophysiologically identified in the macaque monkey, and the distribution of corticostriatal input from the forelimb region of the PMdr was analyzed in relation to its thalamocortical and intracortical (with the frontal lobe) connections. Results have revealed that (1) the forelimb is represented predominantly in the PMdr, while only a few sites representing other body parts are distributed as embedded within the forelimb represe

Neuroimaging in disorders of social and emotional functioning: what is the question?

Social and emotional processing uses neural systems involving structures ranging from the brain stem to the associational cortex. Neuroimaging research has attempted to identify abnormalities in components of these systems that would underlie the behavioral abnormalities seen in disorders of social and emotional processing, notably autism spectrum disorders, the focus of this review. However, the findings have been variable. The most replicated anatomic finding (a tendency toward large brains) is not modular, and metabolic imaging and functional imaging (although showing substantial atypicalit

Blockage of vibrissae afferents: II. Footshock threshold increments.

Because of their dense innervation rat vibrissae have been regarded as a very important sensory system. Many behavioral deficits have been reported by other authors after rat vibrissal afferent blockades. In the present work we found significant threshold increments to footshock following either reversible nerve block (procaine or nerve pressure) or section of the vibrissal afferent nerves, but not following vibrissae trimming. These results are discussed in reference to the tonic or level-setting function of afferent systems.

Distributed neural systems for temporal production: a functional MRI study.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated the neural substrates for computing time intervals. Five right-handed males were asked to judge if a digit probe belonged to a string of digits presented immediately before but to provide their response only after 1.5s had elapsed. This time estimation condition, compared with control working memory and motor tasks, was associated with increased activity in the middle occipital gyri, in the right inferior parietal lobe, and bilaterally in the prefrontal cortex. We argue that activity elicited in the occipital lobe provides dur

The striopallidal pathway is involved in antiparkinsonian-like effects of the blockade of group I metabotropic glutamate receptors in rats.

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the blockade of group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) on the haloperidol-induced catalepsy and proenkephalin mRNA expression in the rat striatum. Bilateral, intrastriatal injection of AIDA ((RS)-1-aminoindan-1,5-dicarboxylic acid, 3-15 microg/0.5 microl), a selective antagonist of group I mGluRs, inhibited catalepsy induced by haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg i.p.). Repeated intrastriatal AIDA administrations (3 x 15 microg/0.5 microl, 3 h apart) counteracted the haloperidol-induced (3 x 1.5 mg/kg s.c., 3 h apart) increase in the proenkeph

Virtual in vivo interactive dissection of white matter fasciculi in the human brain.

This work reports the use of diffusion tensor magnetic resonance tractography to visualize the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the major white matter fasciculi within living human brain. Specifically, we applied this technique to visualize in vivo (i) the superior longitudinal (arcuate) fasciculus, (ii) the inferior longitudinal fasciculus, (iii) the superior fronto-occipital (subcallosal) fasciculus, (iv) the inferior frontooccipital fasciculus, (v) the uncinate fasciculus, (vi) the cingulum, (vii) the anterior commissure, (viii) the corpus callosum, (ix) the internal capsule, and (x) the

Brainstem motor loops in the control of movement.

In recent years, the role of the area around the upper brainstem, particularly the pedunculopontine (PPN) region and the zona incerta (ZI), in the initiation and control of movement has generated much clinical interest. Using electrophysiological and pharmacological methods, we have further explored these structures and their influence in motor control in the nonhuman primate and in patients with proximal tremor. We have found that lesioning the PPN and electrical stimulation at high frequencies of the PPN region in the normal-behaving primate induces akinesia, and low frequency stimulation ca

Axonal transection in adult rat brain induces transsynaptic apoptosis and persistent atrophy of target neurons.

We used the fimbria-fornix (FF) transection model of axonal injury to test the hypothesis that transneuronal degeneration occurs in the adult central nervous system in response to deafferentation. The medial mammillary nucleus, pars medialis (MMNm) was analyzed by light and electron microscopy at 3, 7, 14, and 30 days, and 6 months after unilateral FF transection in adult rat to identify the time course of neuronal responses in a remote target. Presynaptic terminals and neuronal cell bodies degenerated in the MMNm ipsilateral to FF transection. Terminal degeneration occurred predominantly at 3

The cholinergic innervation develops early and rapidly in the rat cerebral cortex: a quantitative immunocytochemical study.

A recently developed method for determining the length of cholinergic axons and number of cholinergic axon varicosities (terminals) in brain sections immunostained for choline acetyltransferase was used to estimate the areal and laminar densities of the cholinergic innervation in rat frontal (motor), parietal (somatosensory) and occipital (visual) cortex at different postnatal ages. This cortical innervation showed an early beginning, a few immunostained fibers being already present in the cortical subplate at birth. In the first two postnatal weeks, it developed rapidly along three parameters

Procedural motor learning in Parkinson's disease.

We have been investigating motor control and learning in parkinsonian subjects. In the current study, we sought to explore the existence of deficits in procedural motor learning, which is a form of implicit motor learning where skill improves over repetitive blocks of trials. We sought to determine, in particular, whether any such deficit is accentuated during specific types or phases of learning. We would expect that those specific learning tasks would require the greatest participation of the basal ganglia. Numerous studies have found that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients may show deficits

Reorganization of adult rat barrel cortex intrinsic signals following kainic acid induced central lesion.

A plasticity model studying the adult rat barrel cortex intrinsic signal after a central lesion was developed. Repeated optical imaging studies of the barrel cortex of five rats were performed over variable periods of time (2 days to 6 weeks) after intracortical injection of kainic acid. The signal of the elicited principal whisker corresponding to the injected barrel in the repeat studies relocated to the perimeter of the lesion. The area of the signals of this principal whisker and of surrounding whiskers were larger in the first two weeks studies than those obtained before injection (P<0.01

The role of the pedunculopontine region in basal-ganglia mechanisms of akinesia.

The akinesia of Parkinsonism is relieved by pallidotomy and subthalamic nucleotomy, but not by thalamotomy. Therefore, this disabling symptom probably depends upon connections other than the pallidalthalamocortical tracts, possibly efferents of the medial pallidum descending to the upper brainstem. We have previously demonstrated akinesia in the normal monkey following radiofrequency lesioning in the region of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), one of the primary targets for descending pallidal outflow. Here, we confirm that selectively destroying neurones in the PPN area, whilst sparing fibr

Developmental changes in membrane properties of chemoreceptor afferent neurons of the rat petrosal ganglia.

Carotid body chemoreceptors increase their responsiveness to hypoxia in the postnatal period, but the mechanism for this increase is unresolved. The purpose of the present study was to examine developmental changes in cellular characteristics of chemoreceptor afferent neurons in the petrosal ganglia with the underlying hypothesis that developmental changes occur and may account for the developmental increase in chemoreceptor responsiveness. Chemoreceptor complexes (carotid body, sinus nerve, glossopharyngeal nerve, and petrosal ganglia) were harvested from rats, aged 3-40 days, and intracellul

Trajectories of cholinergic pathways within the cerebral hemispheres of the human brain.

All sectors of the human cerebral cortex receive dense cholinergic input. The origin of this projection is located in the Ch4 cell group of the nucleus basalis of Meynert. However, very little is known about the location of the pathways which link the cholinergic neurons of the nucleus basalis to the human cerebral cortex. This question was addressed in whole-hemisphere sections processed for the visualization of multiple cholinergic markers. Two highly organized and discrete bundles of cholinergic fibres extended from the nucleus basalis to the cerebral cortex and amygdala and were designated

Development of walking, swimming and neuronal connections after complete spinal cord transection in the neonatal opossum, Monodelphis domestica.

Development of coordinated movements was quantitatively assessed in adult opossums (Monodelphis domestica) with thoracic spinal cords transected by (1) crushing 7-8 d after birth [postnatal days 7-8 (P7-P8)]; at 2-3 years of age, systematic behavioral tests (e.g., climbing, footprint analysis, and swimming) showed only minor differences between control (n = 5) and operated (n = 10) animals; and (2) cutting on P4-P6; at 1 month these opossums exhibited coordinated walking movements but were unable to right themselves from a supine position, unlike controls (n = 6). When tested at 2 or 6 months,

Magnetic coil suppression of extrafoveal visual perception using disappearance targets.

We used magnetic brain stimulation with a butterfly coil over the occipital lobes to study extrafoveal visual field effects in six subjects. The visual test pattern was a grid of asterisks around a central fixation point, and the target was the disappearance of one asterisk for a single frame of the video monitor. Using single magnetic pulses at stimulator outputs of 55-95%, we noted robust interference effects at latencies < or = 100 ms, peaking at approximately 50-90 ms. Suppression of visual perception occurred with both transverse and sagittal alignments of the coil. When the coil was move

An explanation for reflex blink hyperexcitability in Parkinson's disease. II. Nucleus raphe magnus.

Hyperexcitable reflex blinks are a cardinal sign of Parkinson's disease. The first step in the circuit linking the basal ganglia and brainstem reflex blink circuits is the inhibitory nigrostriatal pathway (Basso et al., 1996). The current study reports the circuits linking the superior colliculus (SC) to trigeminal reflex blink circuits. Microstimulation of the deep layers of the SC suppresses subsequent reflex blinks at a latency of 5.4 msec. This microstimulation does not activate periaqueductal gray antinociceptive circuits. The brainstem structure linking SC to reflex blink circuits must s

[Exteroceptive suppression of activity of the temporal muscle. Principles and applications].

The exteroceptive suppression period (ES) of the temporalis muscle activity is a trigemino-trigeminal brain stem reflex. It will be elicited most when stimulating trigeminal sensory afferents by painful stimuli and typically leads to a biphasic interruption of voluntary muscle activity. The first phase of decreased voluntary activity is called the early exteroceptive suppression period (ES1), the second, the late exteroceptive suppression period (ES2). Between these two suppression periods a phase of increased muscle activity, the so-called facilitation period (FP), can be seen. This phenomeno
