Estimates of antibiotic resistance in Italy and Western Europe in 2019: a MICROBE-based comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will cause 10 million deaths per year worldwide by 2050, with economic costs of up to 100 trillion dollars. Antibiotic resistance (ABR) constitutes the majority of this health threat. Globally, 1.27 million people died in 2019 as a direct result of ABR. One in 5 deaths occurred in children under five, and 6 bacterial pathogens accounted for more than 70% of ABR-associated deaths. OBJECTIVES: to compare ABR estimates in terms of death and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 in Italy and in Western Europe (WE) by grading the infectious syndr

[Spread of armA 16S rRNA Methylase Gene in a Tertiary Hospital and Errors in Aminoglycoside Susceptibility Results of Rapid Susceptibility Test Systems].

Aminoglycosides (AGs) are actively used in combination therapies against carbapenem resistant gram negative species in recent years. Spread of 16S rRNA methylases which can cause high-level resistance to AG antibiotics, limits this treatment choice. Although there are some studies showing that errors in determining AG susceptibility in automated systems may be related to the armA gene, one of the 16S rRNA methylase genes, the exact reason for these errors is not yet known. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relevance of 16S rRNA methylases to the discrepancies between VITEK 2.0 and disc

[Characteristics of war wound infection].

War wounds are the most complex type of non-targeted injuries due to uncontrolled tissue damage of varied and multifold localizations, exposing sterile body areas to contamination with a huge amount of bacteria. Wound contamination is caused by both the host microflora and exogenous agents from the environment (bullets, cloth fragments, dust, dirt, water) due to destruction of the host protective barriers. War wounds are the consequence of destructive effects of various types of projectiles, which result in massive tissue devitalization, hematomas, and compromised circulation with tissue ische
