BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom (UK) was the first European country to introduce a national immunisation program for shingles (2013-2014). That year, vaccination coverage ranged from 50 to 64% across the UK, but uptake has declined ever since. This study explored determinants of the acceptance of the shingles vaccine in the UK.
METHODS: Vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, who were eligible for the last catch-up cohort of the 2014-2015 shingles vaccination campaign, were identified using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (the National Health Service data research service) and invited

BACKGROUND: A large free-of-charge quadrivalent HPV (qHPV) vaccination program, covering four cohorts annually (women 11, 14, 17 and 24 years), has been implemented in Basilicata since 2007. This study evaluated vaccine and non-vaccine HPV prevalence 5-7 years post-vaccination program implementation in vaccinated and unvaccinated women.
METHODS: This population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in the public screening centers of the Local Health Unit in Matera between 2012 and 2014. Cervical samples were obtained for Pap and HPV testing (HC2, LiPA Extra® assay) and participants compl

BACKGROUND: In 2006, the HPV (Human papillomavirus) 6/11/16/18 quadrivalent vaccine was approved by the European Medicines Agency and obtained its marketing authorization in both girls and boys. Currently, the French guidelines recommend and refund vaccination of girls aged 11 to 14 with a catch-up program for females from 15 to 19 years old.
DISCUSSION: In France, HPV vaccination coverage tends to decrease. At the end of 2015, the vaccination coverage with three doses reached only 14% in 16-year-old girls (three doses). Although men are also affected by HPV-related diseases such as anal canc

BACKGROUND: The use of blood group O as "universal blood" for emergency whole blood transfusions carries the risk for a hemolytic transfusion reaction mediated by incompatible A/B antibodies. This risk can be minimized by assuring that the donor has a low titer of anti-A and anti-B. The level of these naturally occurring antibodies has been shown to be increased by vaccination with most biologically derived vaccines. This boostering effect has been investigated for the new generation of vaccines.

OBJECTIVE: Using 32 weeks of data from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey, factors associated with receipt of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccinations among US children during October 2009 through February 2010 are examined.
METHODS: Logistic models estimated receipt of first dose by January 1, 2010 for all children aged 4.5 months through 17 years and receipt of second dose by February 1, 2010 for children aged 6 months through 9 years who received a first dose, using demographic characteristics and measures of family structure, parental education, family income, access to health care, and

BACKGROUND: Rubella is usually a mild viral illness, but during pregnancy, it can have potentially devastating effects causing fetal losses and severe congenital malformations (congenital rubella syndrome). Rubella is now rare in most developed countries following a successful vaccination programme. We aimed to investigate differences in epidemiological profile of pregnant women screened antenatally in Liverpool to identify risk factors for rubella immunity.
METHODS: All samples were tested with the Elecsys Rubella IgG immunoassay kit. A result <10 IU/ml was considered to be seronegative.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in men/boys aged 9-26 years. In 2009, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) provided a permissive recommendation allowing HPV vaccine administration to this group.
PURPOSE: To assess HPV vaccination initiation and coverage, evaluate awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine, and identify factors independently associated with such awareness among men aged 18-26 years.
METHODS: Data from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey were analyzed in 2011.

PURPOSE: A universal publicly funded chickenpox vaccination program was implemented in Alberta in 2002. We examine the epidemiology of medically attended shingles in Alberta from 1994 to 2010.
METHODS: Incident shingles cases (earliest health service utilizations for ICD-9 053 or ICD-10-CA B02) and their co-morbid conditions for the 12 months prior to shingles diagnosis were identified from the records of Alberta's universal, publicly funded health-care insurance system for 1994-2010. Shingles diagnostic codes at least 180 days after the first were classified as recurrent episodes. Denominato

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is one of the leading bacterial causes of invasive disease in populations without access to Hib conjugate vaccines (Hib-CV). India has recently decided to introduce Hib-CV into the routine immunization programme in selected States. Longitudinal data quantifying the burden of bacterial meningitis and the proportion of disease caused by various bacteria are needed to track the impact of Hib-CV once introduced. A hospital-based sentinel surveillance network was established at four places in the country and this study reports the results

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) causes pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis in neonates. The current distribution pattern of GBS serotypes in developing countries such as India, China and Brazil is not clear. In order to appropriately plan for vaccination programs to address the burden of this disease in these countries, prospective population based studies are urgently needed. In our discussions, we focused on India, China and Brazil because of the membership of our workgroup, but data on other countries are also presented here. Further studies in developing countries are needed so as to better formu

OBJECTIVE: Persistent T-cell activation is frequently observed in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA, formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis). T-cell activation is usually balanced by negative costimulatory molecules. The negative costimulator programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) and its relevance to T-cell immunity have not been studied so far in GPA. Thus it is the aim of the study to characterize the role of PD-1 in GPA.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients suffering from GPA and 19 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. T-lymphocyte subsets from peripheral blood were analysed by f

The article describes epidemiological situation concerning invasive meningococcal disease in Opolskie Voivodeship in comparison to the whole country in years 2005-2010, and activities undertaken related to the increased number of meningococcal infections. Owing to anti-epidemic and educational activities, distinct improvement of epidemiological situation in respect to invasive meningococcal disease in Opolskie Voivodeship was achieved. It required many of interdisciplinary activities and multi stage cooperation between Public Health Institutions. Only closed cooperation and exact realization o

Although vaccinations are most commonly associated with the pediatric population, it is important for healthcare professionals to be familiar with the vaccines that are recommended for adults. The authors discuss 3 vaccines-the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, the varicella vaccine, and the herpes zoster vaccine-including information about the diseases and complications that they protect against. Two doses, separated by 4 weeks, of both the MMR and varicella vaccines are recommended for all adults who do not have immunization or contraindications. All adults aged 60 years or older sh

Following the death of 2 adolescents due to serogroup C invasive meningococcal disease (SCIMD) in April 2008, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) observed a high level of concern in 2 Chicago communities inferred to have low meningococcal vaccine (MCV) coverage rates. In response, CDPH promptly mobilized additional resources, administering 5,343 doses of MCV in 40 schools over 2 weeks and immunizing 44% of enrolled students aged 11 to 18 years. The number of eligible students vaccinated per school ranged from 9 to 466 (median, 112) and the proportion of age-eligible students receivi

To determine the clinical efficacy and cost-saving effect of pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV) against community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), an open-label, randomized clinical trial was conducted involving 786 Japanese subjects older than 65 years of age receiving a routine influenza vaccine during the 2-year period. Study subjects were randomly assigned to either a PPV group (n=394) or to a non-PPV group (n=392). The incidence, admission and the medical cost for all-cause pneumonia were compared between these two groups. PPV vaccination significantly reduced the incidence of admission f

Individuals infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) have two possible outcomes of infection, clearance or persistent infection, determined by a complex set of virus-host interactions. The focus of this review is the host mechanisms that facilitate clearance. Strong evidence points to characteristics of the cellular immune response as the key determinants of outcome, with evidence for the coordinated effects of the timing, magnitude, and breadth, as well as the intra-hepatic localisation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses being critical. The recent discovery of viral evasion strategies targeting i

In 1976, influenza mass vaccination among schoolchildren was started under the Preventive Vaccination Law, which was intended to control epidemics in the community. However, in the late 1980s, questions about this policy and vaccine efficacy arose, and a campaign against vaccination began. In 1994, influenza was excluded from the target diseases list in the Preventive Vaccination Law, without considering the immunization policy with respect to the common indications in high-risk groups. In 2001, the Law was again amended, specifying target groups, such as the elderly aged 65 or over, for influ

BACKGROUND: The cost-benefit of raccoon rabies control strategies such as oral rabies vaccination (ORV) are under evaluation. As an initial quantification of the potential cost savings for a control program, the collection of selected rabies cost data was pilot tested for five counties in New York State (NYS) in a three-year period.
METHODS: Rabies costs reported to NYS from the study counties were computerized and linked to a human rabies exposure database. Consolidated costs by county and year were averaged and compared.
RESULTS: Reported rabies-associated costs for all rabies variants tot

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between ethnicity and uptake of the first dose of mumps, measles and rubella (MMR1) vaccination, and to study important factors influencing the parental decision about vaccination. Examination of routine data on uptake of MMR1 vaccine among children living in the London borough of Brent, North West London, for associations with ethnicity was carried out. Six focus group interviews were held and a questionnaire on factors related to immunisation by convenience samples of mothers from Asian, Afro-Caribbean and White backgroun
