Pattern recognition analysis of 1H NMR spectra from perchloric acid extracts of human brain tumor biopsies.

Pattern recognition techniques (factor analysis and neural networks) were used to investigate and classify human brain tumors based on the 1H NMR spectra of chemically extracted biopsies (n = 118). After removing information from lactate (because of variable ischemia times), unsupervised learning suggested that the spectra separated naturally into two groups: meningiomas and other tumors. Principal component analysis reduced the dimensionality of the data. A back-propagation neural network using the first 30 principal components gave 85% correct classification of meningiomas and nonmeningiomas

Dissociated overt and covert recognition as an emergent property of a lesioned neural network.

Covert recognition of faces in prosopagnosia, in which patients cannot overtly recognize faces but nevertheless manifest recognition when tested in certain indirect ways, has been interpreted as the functioning of an intact visual face recognition system deprived of access to other brain systems necessary for consciousness. The authors propose an alternative hypothesis: that the visual face recognition system is damaged but not obliterated in these patients and that damaged neural networks will manifest their residual knowledge in just the kinds of tasks used to measure covert recognition. Buccal or palatal? AI-based localization of impacted maxillary canines using panoramic radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Third-dimensional binary localization, determining whether impacted maxillary canines (IMCs) requiring surgical exposure lie buccally or palatally, is among the key parameters influencing the choice of surgical approach. In 30–50% of cases, the tooth is non-palpable, necessitating further radiographic evaluation. This study investigated whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) applied to panoramic radiographs (PRs) can accurately classify IMC position, enhancing their diagnostic value in preoperative assessment. METHODS: This retrospective study included 494 IMCs from 472 PRs.

3D transformer-based dose prediction in HDR brachytherapy for cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: The clinical process of high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDRBT) is time-consuming and relies on user expertise and preference. Deep learning-based dose prediction can act as a quality assurance (QA) tool to identify suboptimal needle placement and enhance treatment planning efficiency in HDR interstitial brachytherapy. This study aims to introduce a 3D transformer-based deep learning method to automatically predict the dose distribution in HDR brachytherapy for cervical cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 96 CT-based treatment plans from 24 patients with cervical cancer who u

Long-Sequence Lower Limb Action Recognition via Action-Specific Attention and Logic Correction for Daily Rehabilitation.

Accurate and robust intent recognition is the cornerstone of human-machine collaboration in rehabilitation, particularly for controlling Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRL). However, recognizing long sequences of continuous lower-limb movements remains challenging due to severe category imbalance and the absence of biomechanical logical constraints. This paper proposes a hybrid deep learning framework, named ASAM-BiLSTM-MC, which employs a multimodal fusion strategy combining surface electromyography (sEMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data. First, a sliding-window-based Action-Specific A

Two-Step Ensemble Convolutional Neural Networks for Colonoscopic Biopsy Classification Resembling Pathologists' Process.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, and early examination via colonoscopy is increasingly used to prevent CRC mortality. Recently, studies have attempted utilizing artificial intelligence for the classification of CRC. However, datasets were limited in these studies, and the limited number of findings resulting from these studies are not specific to cancerous or noncancerous findings. We present a full pipeline of ensemble deep learning approach to classify five diagnostic categories. Through this pipeline, whole slide images (WSIs) exhibiting low qua

Enhancing Type 1 Diabetes Polygenic Risk Prediction Through Neural Networks and Entropy-Derived Insights.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease with a strong genetic component (~70% heritability). Early identification of individuals at risk is crucial for early intervention or risk assessment. Although polygenic risk scores (PRS) have shown promise in risk assessment, most current approaches remain constrained by linear assumptions and limited generalizability. We aimed to develop a neural network-driven classifier using T1D-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In addition, we explored the inclusion of an entropy-derived feature as a complementary variable, representing the

Human-in-the-loop validation of an artificial intelligence-driven real-time prostatic capsule recognition model for nerve-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

BACKGROUND: Nerve-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (NS-RARP) requires precise prostatic capsule identification to balance oncological control with functional preservation. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based intraoperative navigation could provide real-time anatomical guidance, but clinical feasibility remains unvalidated. METHODS: We conducted a human-in-the-loop feasibility study evaluating a convolutional neural network system for real-time fluorescence-like navigation (FLN) prostatic capsule identification. A total of 285 frames from 12 NS-RARP procedures have been used to esta

AI-Generated Motifs Distinguish Altered Spatiotemporal Pain Response in the VTA of Mice With Chronic Pain.

More than one fifth of American adults lives with chronic pain. As pain chronifies, the underlying neuronal circuitry undergoes maladaptive spatial and temporal changes. We previously developed and used an advanced CMOS sensor to record video of ventral tegmental area (VTA) activity in response to acute pain and pain chronification. Here we use both discriminative and generative AI approaches to spatiotemporally characterize the VTA's complex response to pain and quantify changes in its circuit dynamics murine chronic pain models. We trained a time-attention convolutional neural network (TA-CN

Enhanced detection of subtle cortical abnormalities in focal epilepsy using 7 T MRI surface-based models and graph neural networks.

PURPOSE: MRI detection of subtle focal cortical dysplasia (FCD)-like abnormalities remains challenging in focal epilepsy. Higher signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution offered by ultra-high-field 7T MRI and surface-based graph-neural-network (GNN) analysis may improve detection of subtle cortical abnormalities. We evaluated whether combining 7T MRI with a surface-based GNN classifier improves lesion detection in focal epilepsy of suspected structural origin. METHODS: We analyzed paired 7T and 3T MRI datasets from 87 patients with focal epilepsy (78.1% pediatric) and 10 internal healthy

digiBONE: an automated tool for segmental Greulich-Pyle bone age assessment of Indian children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate bone age assessment (BAA) is essential for diagnosing and managing pediatric endocrine and growth disorders, as it reflects biological maturity beyond chronological age. The widely used Greulich-Pyle (GP) method estimates bone age by visually comparing full-hand radiographs with standardised reference images. Although widely used, this technique-and most automated systems based on it-assumes uniform skeletal maturation across the hand. In practice, however, skeletal maturation progresses at different rates in the anatomical segments of the hand under varied hormonal infl

Spatio-temporal ensemble machine learning forecasts of animal leptospirosis in enzootic Indian States using integrated environmental predictors.

Leptospirosis is a significant zoonotic disease in India, with Gujarat and Karnataka recognised as enzootic states experiencing recurrent animal and human outbreaks. This study applied a spatio-temporal ensemble machine learning framework to monthly animal leptospirosis surveillance data from these regions, integrating satellite-derived environmental predictors. Environmental variables were aligned with surveillance data and processed into continuous monthly time series. Three base regression models, Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), and a feed-forward neural network (FFNN)

A predictive model for recurrence in patients with borderline ovarian tumor based on neural multi-task logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Effective management of patients with borderline ovarian tumor (BOT) requires the timely identification of those at a higher risk of recurrence. Artificial neural networks have been successfully used in many areas of clinical event prediction, significantly affecting clinical decisions and practice. OBJECTIVE: We developed and validated a novel clinical model based on neural multi-task logistic regression (N-MTLR) for predicting recurrence in patients with BOT who underwent initial surgeries, and compared its prediction performance with that of the Cox regression model. METHODS:

An extensive dataset of spiking activity to reveal the syntax of the ventral stream.

Visual neuroscience benefits from high-quality datasets with neuronal responses to many images. Several neuroimaging datasets have been published in recent years, but no comparable dataset with spiking activity exists. Here, we introduce the THINGS ventral stream spiking dataset (TVSD). We extensively sampled neuronal activity in response to >25,000 natural images from the THINGS database in macaques, using high-channel-count implants in three key cortical regions: primary visual cortex (V1), V4, and the inferotemporal cortex. We showcase the utility of TVSD by using an artificial neural netwo

Leukaemia Stem Cells and Their Normal Stem Cell Counterparts Are Morphologically Distinguishable by Artificial Intelligence.

Leukaemia stem cells (LSCs) are a rare population among the bulk of leukaemia cells and are responsible for disease initiation, progression/relapse and insensitivity to therapies in numerous haematologic malignancies. Identification of LSCs and monitoring of their quantity before, during, and after treatments will provide a guidance for choosing a correct treatment and assessing therapy response and disease prognosis, but such a method is still lacking simply because there are no distinct morphological features recognisable for distinguishing LSCs from normal stem cell counterparts. Using arti

Physics-Informed Learning Framework for Lower Limb Kinematic Prediction With Sparse Sensors and Its Application in Chronic Stroke.

Kinematic evaluation of gait is critical for biomechanical analysis and disease diagnosis. Stroke survivors, due to unilateral motor impairments, often exhibit asymmetric gait patterns, significantly altering lower limb joint kinematics. Accurate measurement of lower limb joint angles enables therapists to assess the functional status of stroke patients, thereby promoting the rehabilitation process. Although optical motion capture systems provide precise measurements, their use is constrained to laboratory and clinical settings. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a promising wearable alte

An AI method to predict pregnancy loss by extracting biological indicators from embryo ultrasound recordings in early pregnancy.

B-ultrasound results are widely used in early pregnancy loss (EPL) prediction, but there are inevitable intra-observer and inter-observer errors in B-ultrasound results especially in early pregnancy, which lead to inconsistent assessment of embryonic status, and thus affect the judgment of EPL. To address this, we need a rapid and accurate model to predict pregnancy loss in the first trimester. This study aimed to construct an artificial intelligence model to automatically extract biometric parameters from ultrasound videos of early embryos and predict pregnancy loss. This can effectively elim
