Bit-mapped colour imaging of the potential fields of propagated and segmental subcortical components of somatosensory evoked potentials in man.

Early somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median or ulnar nerve stimulation were recorded with non-cephalic reference from neck, oesophagus and scalp in normal young adults. Transit times and durations were estimated for different components. SEP fields were mapped with up to 24 skin electrodes around the neck or along the midline neck and scalp, and projected onto a 2-dimensional plane for bit-mapped colour imaging. The posterior neck N11 is a near-field potential propagated caudorostrally in the dorsal column, associated with a positive P11 far field beyond termination of the cuneate b

Urinary excretion of arterial blood prostaglandins and thromboxanes in man.

To determine the fraction of the arterial prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha (6-keto-PGF1 alpha), and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) that is excreted unmetabolized into human urine, the 3H-labeled compounds were separately infused into the renal artery or brachial vein of 23 subjects. Urine extracts were subjected to sequential chromatography on thin-layer plates, Sephadex LH-20, and reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography to isolate the unmetabolized fraction. Dual isotope ratio techniques were used to identify peak fractions, to assess purity, and to calculate recovery. F

Prepartum and postpartum regulation of maternal behaviour in the rat.

Maternal behaviour in the rat consists of four principal components: nursing or crouching over the young, retrieving pups to the nest, body and genital licking of pups, and nest-building. Normally the onset of maternal behaviour occurs at parturition but studies reveal that the true onset is somewhat earlier, around 24 hours pre partum. The onset of maternal behaviour is hormonally determined and it is most likely that the ovarian hormone oestradiol plays a major role under the specific conditions that exist pre partum. The onset of maternal behaviour requires the resolution of tendencies of f

Annonacin, a mono-tetrahydrofuran acetogenin, arrests cancer cells at the G1 phase and causes cytotoxicity in a Bax- and caspase-3-related pathway.

Annonaceous acetogenins are a group of potential anti-neoplastic agents isolated from Annonaceae plants. In this study, we purified annonacin, a cytotoxic mono-tetrahydrofuran acetogenin, from the seeds of Annona reticulata and analyzed its biological effects. Herein, we have shown that annonacin caused significant cell death in various cancer cell lines. T24 bladder cancer cells at the S phase were more vulnerable to the cytotoxicity of annonacin. Furthermore, annonacin activated p21 in a p53-independent manner and arrested T24 cells at the G1 phase. It also induced Bax expression, enhanced c

Treatment-associated factors potentially linked to relapse in pediatric MOG antibody-associated disease: An exploratory case series.

BACKGROUND: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is an inflammatory demyelination disorder primarily affecting children. Pediatric-onset MOGAD typically responds well to corticosteroids; however, predictors of relapse and optimal strategies for sustained remission remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore treatment-associated factors that may be related to relapse in pediatric MOGAD, we focused on remission timing, second-line therapy, and prednisolone (PSL) tapering. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 11 pediatric MOGAD cases diagnosed between 2015 and 2023.

Breastfeeding infants with inherited metabolic disorders: review of current strategies and practical recommendations to overcome challenges.

Human milk feeding (HMF), through direct breastfeeding (BF) and expressed HM, is the optimal source of infant nutrition, yet practical guidance for inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) remains limited outside phenylketonuria (PKU). This review summarises strategies, challenges, and clinical considerations for implementing HMF across IMDs requiring dietary modification. A comprehensive search identified studies reporting practical aspects of HMF in disorders of amino acid metabolism, organic acidaemias, urea cycle disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, and peripheral galactose epimerase def

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease: redefining the conceptual framework from nomenclature to emerging therapeutic paradigms.

The renaming of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), and subsequently to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), signals a paradigm shift that repositions hepatic steatosis as a systemic metabolic disorder rather than a diagnosis by exclusion. This review synthesizes the evidence supporting the nomenclature transition, examines the pathogenic mechanisms driving disease progression, evaluates the clinical implications of the lean MAFLD phenotype, and surveys the evolving therapeutic landscape. G Protein-Coupled Oestrogen Receptor Actions Targeting the Hallmarks of Cancer in Human Prostate Cells: From Cell Fate to Metabolic Reprogramming.

Background/Objectives: The G protein-coupled oestrogen receptor (GPER) has anti-tumorigenic effects in several human cancers. However, its role in prostate cancer (PCa) remains incompletely defined. The present study investigated GPER's role in targeting the hallmarks of PCa. Methods: Tissue microarrays were used to analyse GPER immunoexpression in PCa samples. Non-neoplastic (PNT1A) and neoplastic (LNCaP, DU145 and PC3) prostate cells were treated with the GPER-specific agonist, G1. Cell viability, proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, migration and invasion were evaluated. Glucose consumptio

Activation of primordial follicles.

Primordial follicle activation represents the pivotal and rate-limiting transition that governs the size and longevity of the ovarian reserve, thereby shaping female reproductive lifespan. Although the vast majority of primordial follicles remain quiescent, a small fraction is periodically activated through tightly regulated signaling events. Emerging evidence reveals that dormancy is not a passive state, but an actively maintained program orchestrated by intrinsic oocyte pathways, surrounding pre-granulosa cells, and the ovarian microenvironment. Key intracellular regulator PI3K-Akt-FOXO3 sig

Composition Engineering of Mn-Based Disordered Rocksalt for Understanding Electrode Degradation Behavior.

Cation-disordered rocksalt (DRX) cathodes have emerged as promising candidates owing to their high theoretical capacity and use of earth-abundant transition metals (TMs), such as Mn, Ti, and Fe. Li+ transport occurs through a three-dimensional percolation network of 0-TM diffusion pathways. However, the practical application of Mn-based DRX cathodes is often hindered by structural instability and irreversible oxygen redox during cycling. In this study, we investigate the role of the stoichiometric Li/TM ratio on the electrochemical performance and degradation behavior of Li0.9+xMn1.1-2xTixO2 (

How cholesterol modulates LL-37 function: A biophysical study in eukaryotic-like membrane systems.

The limited selectivity of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can lead to unintended damage to healthy eukaryotic cells, a process strongly influenced by membrane physicochemical properties. Cholesterol (CHO) is a key regulator of lipid packing, membrane order, and bilayer mechanical stability; however, its role in modulating AMP-membrane interactions remain incompletely understood. Here, we examine how CHO alters peptide-membrane interactions at the molecular level using eukaryotic membrane models composed of phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin, and increasing CHO fractions. The food-packaging sector is undergoing a major transition driven by the environmental burden associated with petroleum-based plastics and the increasing demand for sustainable alternatives. In this context, biodegradable packaging materials capable of extending food shelf life through active preservation functions have attracted considerable interest. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer and an attractive candidate for sustainable packaging; however, it lacks intrinsic antimicrobial activity. In the present study, innovative carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based composite films were d

Therapeutic Advances in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Harboring EGFR Exon 20 Insertion Mutations: From Molecular Biology to Targeted Therapy.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 20 insertion (ex20ins) mutations are the third most common EGFR mutation subtype in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), accounting for approximately 4-12% of all EGFR-mutated cases. Unlike classical EGFR mutations, ex20ins mutations confer inherent resistance to first-, second- and third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) due to unique structural alterations that lock the αC-helix in an active orientation, creating steric hindrance within the drug-binding pocket. Until recently, platinum-based chemotherapy remained the standard first-

Hypoxic microenvironment in cancer: role in metabolic reprogramming.

Hypoxia, a defining hallmark of solid tumors, arises from structurally and functionally abnormal vasculature, rapid cellular proliferation, and impaired perfusion, resulting in chronic and cycling oxygen deprivation within the tumor massThe hypoxic tumor microenvironment orchestrates extensive molecular reprogramming primarily through stabilization and activation of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF-1α and HIF-2α), which regulate broad transcriptional networks governing metabolism, angiogenesis, stemness, invasion, and immune modulation. Under low oxygen tension, tumor cells shift toward aerobic

Endothelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition in Post-Myocardial Infarction Fibrosis: A Maladaptive but Targetable Pathway.

Myocardial infarction (MI) initiates a healing response in which fibroblasts and other cells deposit extracellular matrix to form a stabilizing scar. This scarring is essential for preventing ventricular rupture, yet when excessive or diffuse, it becomes maladaptive: fibrosis stiffens the ventricle, impairs filling, and drives progression to heart failure. Traditional antifibrotic approaches, such as broad TGF-β blockade or collagen cross-linking inhibition, have largely failed because fibroblast activity is required for early scar integrity, while established fibrosis is difficult to reverse.

From internal echoes to sharing experiences: transformative learning with voice apps to enhance transgender care literacy in medical students.

INTRODUCTION: Gendered voice perception is central to gender recognition and can be a major source of distress for transgender people, yet voice and voice therapy remain marginal in medical curricula. This study examined how a digital, experiential seminar using voice-feedback applications can foster medical students' understanding of gendered voice and transgender health. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative observational study within a 135-min online seminar, "Feminize Your Resonance!", embedded in a fourth-year public health module at the Medical University of Vienna. Multipassage Landau-Zener tunneling oscillations in the dual dressing of atomic qubits.

The application of nonresonant electromagnetic fields, a technique known as 'dressing', provides critical control over the properties of fundamental quantum systems. We investigate the time evolution of a dressed-atom coherent spin ensemble, effectively representing a qubit, driven by a non-resonant electromagnetic field with two components, one along the quantisation static magnetic field and the other one orthogonal to it. While this second component produces a Larmor precession of the spin, the longitudinal dressing modifies the instantaneous field value, leading to a frequency modulated te

Solution-Tunable Interfacial Interaction Landscape Governs Anomalous Nanoparticle Diffusion in Liquid-Phase Electron Microscopy.

Understanding how nanoparticles move near liquid-solid interfaces is central to nanoscale transport in catalysis, biology, and soft materials. Here, we uncover the physical mechanisms governing anomalous surface diffusion of PEG-coated gold nanorods (AuNRs) near the silicon nitride (SiNx) membrane in liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM). By systematically tuning the ionic environment (H2O, 5 mM H2SO4, 1.5 mM NaCl, 5 mM PBS), we show how electrostatic screening and ion-specific surface interactions modulate the interaction landscape, altering the strength and abundance of bindi
