Automated Computed Tomography Segmentation of the Pharyngeal Airway and Palate to Accelerate Tübingen Palatal Plate Fabrication in Pierre Robin Sequence.

Infants with Pierre Robin sequence frequently develop upper airway obstruction due to micrognathia and glossoptosis. The Tübingen palatal plate repositions the tongue base anteriorly to improve airway patency; however, conventional fabrication requires serial intraoral impressions and repeated nasoendoscopy, which prolongs airway compromise. Computed tomography (CT) enables single-session virtual spur design, yet manual pharyngeal airway and hard palate segmentation is labor-intensive, delaying treatment. The authors evaluated convolutional neural network-based automated segmentation to accele

Hybrid deep learning models for the screening of Diabetic Macular Edema in optical coherence tomography volumes.

Several studies published so far used highly selective image datasets from unclear sources to train computer vision models and that may lead to overestimated results, while those studies conducted in real-life remain scarce. To avoid image selection bias, we stacked convolutional and recurrent neural networks (CNN-RNN) to analyze complete optical coherence tomography (OCT) cubes in a row and predict diabetic macular edema (DME), in a real-world diabetic retinopathy screening program. A retrospective cohort study was carried out. Throughout 4-years, 5314 OCT cubes from 4408 subjects who attende

Retrospective validation study of an artificial neural network-based preoperative decision-support tool for noninvasive lymph node staging (NILS) in women with primary breast cancer (ISRCTN14341750).

BACKGROUND: Surgical sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is routinely used to reliably stage axillary lymph nodes in early breast cancer (BC). However, SLNB may be associated with postoperative arm morbidities. For most patients with BC undergoing SLNB, the findings are benign, and the procedure is currently questioned. A decision-support tool for the prediction of benign sentinel lymph nodes based on preoperatively available data has been developed using artificial neural network modelling. METHODS: This was a retrospective geographical and temporal validation study of the noninvasive lymph no

Examining the Influenza A Virus Sialic Acid Binding Preference Predictions of a Sequence-Based Convolutional Neural Network.

BACKGROUND: Though receptor binding specificity is well established as a contributor to host tropism and spillover potential of influenza A viruses, determining receptor binding preference of a specific virus still requires expensive and time-consuming laboratory analyses. In this study, we pilot a machine learning approach for prediction of binding preference. METHODS: We trained a convolutional neural network to predict the α2,6-linked sialic acid preference of influenza A viruses given the hemagglutinin amino acid sequence. The model was evaluated with an independent test dataset to assess

Prediction of Achilles Tendon Force During Common Motor Tasks From Markerless Video.

Remodeling of the Achilles tendon (AT) is partly driven by its mechanical environment. AT force can be estimated with neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) modeling; however, the complex experimental setup required to perform the analyses confines use to the laboratory. We developed task-specific long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks that employ markerless video data to predict the AT force during walking, running, countermovement jump, single-leg landing, and single-leg heel rise. The task-specific LSTM models were trained on pose estimation keypoints and corresponding AT force data from 16 sub

DLBCL cells with ferroptosis morphology can be detected with a deep convolutional neural network.

It has been demonstrated that diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is especially sensitive to ferroptosis. Currently, confirming the presence of ferroptosis requires flow cytometry, which is a time consuming and labor-intensive task. Blistering of the cell membrane has been shown to be a ferroptosis-specific morphological change. In this study we developed a deep convolutional neural network to detect the blistering of cell membrane. Buthionine sulfoximine treatment increased the percentage of blistering cells from 2 % to 38 % (p < 0.001) when glutathione was deprived from the culture media.

Predicting graft and patient outcomes following kidney transplantation using interpretable machine learning models.

The decision to accept a deceased donor organ offer for transplant, or wait for something potentially better in the future, can be challenging. Clinical decision support tools predicting transplant outcomes are lacking. This project uses interpretable methods to predict both graft failure and patient death using data from previously accepted kidney transplant offers. Using more than 25 years of transplant outcome data, we train and compare several survival analysis models in single risk settings. In addition, we use post hoc interpretability techniques to clinically validate these models. Neur

Early identification of patients at risk for iron-deficiency anemia using deep learning techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common health problem worldwide, and up to 10% of adult patients with incidental IDA may have gastrointestinal cancer. A diagnosis of IDA can be established through a combination of laboratory tests, but it is often underrecognized until a patient becomes symptomatic. Based on advances in machine learning, we hypothesized that we could reduce the time to diagnosis by developing an IDA prediction model. Our goal was to develop 3 neural networks by using retrospective longitudinal outpatient laboratory data to predict the risk of IDA 3 to 6 months be

A convolutional neural network model for survival prediction based on prognosis-related cascaded Wx feature selection.

Great advances in deep learning have provided effective solutions for prediction tasks in the biomedical field. However, accurate prognosis prediction using cancer genomics data remains challenging due to the severe overfitting problem caused by curse of dimensionality inherent to high-throughput sequencing data. Moreover, there are unique challenges to perform survival analysis, arising from the difficulty in utilizing censored samples whose events of interest are not observed. Convolutional neural network (CNN) models provide us the opportunity to extract meaningful hierarchical features to

A Transfer-Learning-Based Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Predicting Leukemia-Related Phosphorylation Sites from Protein Primary Sequences.

As one of the most important post-translational modifications (PTMs), phosphorylation refers to the binding of a phosphate group with amino acid residues like Ser (S), Thr (T) and Tyr (Y) thus resulting in diverse functions at the molecular level. Abnormal phosphorylation has been proved to be closely related with human diseases. To our knowledge, no research has been reported describing specific disease-associated phosphorylation sites prediction which is of great significance for comprehensive understanding of disease mechanism. In this work, focusing on three types of leukemia, we aim to de
