Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in association with gamma zone width and disc-fovea distance.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness as surrogate of the optic nerve decreases with longer axial length. We explored which explanatory parameters might explain that association. METHODS: Participants of the population-based Beijing Eye Study 2011 without any retinal or optic nerve disease were selected based on a refractive error-based stratified randomization. RESULTS: The study included of 632 participants (age: 59.1 ± 7.3 years; axial length: 23.5 ± 1.2 mm; range: 20.88-28.68 mm). Thicker RNFL (mean: 101.0 ± 10.0 μm) was associated (mult

Absorbable suture for band tightening of scleral buckling in pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: a modified surgical technique and a 6-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a separation of the neurosensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium as a result of liquid vitreous passing through a retinal break. Scleral buckling surgery (SB) is a conventional treatment for RRD. In SB, a silicon explant is used to indent the sclera, reduce vitreous traction, and close the retinal break, and an encircling band is used circumferentially, leading to myopia. This study aimed to evaluate the functional and biometric outcomes after SB with absorbable band-tightening sutures in patients with pseudophakic RRD. METHODS

En Face Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of Beta and Gamma Parapapillary Atrophy in High Myopia.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have suggested that OCT-based classification of parapapillary atrophy (PPA) may be helpful in distinguishing glaucomatous from myopic optic disc changes. However, the pathologic implications of PPA may be different in highly myopic eyes that exhibit optic disc deformations distinct from low-to-moderate myopia. Therefore, we conducted the current study to investigate factors associated with OCT-defined PPA zones measured in en face reconstructed swept-source OCT (SS OCT) images in highly myopic eyes. DESIGN: Retrospective, cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-s

Functional burden of strabismus: decreased binocular summation and binocular inhibition.

IMPORTANCE: Binocular summation (BiS) is defined as the superiority of visual function for binocular over monocular viewing. Binocular summation decreases with age and large interocular differences in visual acuity. To our knowledge, BiS has not heretofore been well studied as a functional measure of binocularity in strabismus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of strabismus on BiS using a battery of psychophysical tasks that are clinically relevant and easy to use and to determine whether strabismus is associated with binocular inhibition in extreme cases. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTI

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) versus laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for hyperopia correction.

BACKGROUND: Hyperopia, or hypermetropia (also known as long-sightedness or far-sightedness), is the condition where the unaccommodating eye brings parallel light to a focus behind the retina instead of on it. Hyperopia can be corrected with both non-surgical and surgical methods, among them photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser assisted In situ keratomileusis (LASIK). There is uncertainty as to whether hyperopic-PRK or hyperopic-LASIK is the better method. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this review were to determine whether PRK or LASIK leads to more reliable, stable and safe results whe

Polypharmacy and the lack of oculo-visual complaints from those with mental illness and dual diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mental illness (MI) and intellectual disability (ID) are characterized as dually diagnosed (DD). These individuals are known to have numerous systemic and oculo-visual anomalies. This comorbidity of conditions should elicit frequent oculo-visual complaints from these patients during the initial review of systems. A search of MedLine yielded one article that was published on oculo-visual symptomology/pain associated with MI and DD. This report appears to be the first to assess the frequency of these symptoms within these 2 unique populations. METHODS: A retrospecti
