INTRODUCTION: There is a great need for alternative treatments for patients with relapsing and refractory multiple myeloma. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) are characterized by their mucosal and glandular tissue localization. The case described here falls into the European-American classification of a low-grade B-cell lymphoma of the MALT type, with a gingival lesion 2 years after a gastric lesion. The pathogenetic mechanisms of NHL in oral MALT and the diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

About 25%-30% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer can be resected with curative intent. However, systemic relapses occur in up to 70% of these patients. A 65-year-old woman with ocular myasthenia was found to have three tumours in the anterior mediastinum, revealed by magnetic resonance imaging. All three lesions were radically resected. Histologically, one was a mixed-type thymoma, one a thymic lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, and the third had features of both these types. This appears to be the first reported case of coexisting thymic lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (TLC) and thymoma associated with ocular myasthenia.

The occurrence of leukemic pleural effusion is a rare complication in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and has not been reported in B-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (B-PLL). We report a case of pleural effusion revealing a B-PLL. The diagnosis was made on the cytological and immunological characteristics of cells in the blood and pleural effusion. This patient was treated with fludarabine and was in complete remission after three courses. This observation may have clinical implications for the use of new adenoside nucleotide analogues in symptomatic B-PLL.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the safety and efficacy of photodynamic therapy using topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and red light to treat actinic keratoses (AKs).
DESIGN: Actinic keratoses were treated with topical ALA (concentrations of 0%, 10%, 20%, or 30%) under occlusion for 3 hours. Before photodynamic therapy, sites were examined for fluorescence. Sites were irradiated with an argon pumped dye laser (630 nm) at fluences of 10 to 150 J/cm2.

To know the clinical characteristics and the prognostic factors of hyperleukocytic acute leukemia, we reviewed 244 patients with acute leukemia associated with hyperleukocytosis. Restrospective analysis and control study were used. Hyperleukocytosis occured in 8.5% of patients with acute leukemia. Hyperleukocytosis in ALL was more common than that in AML. To treat patients with an accurately verified peripheral T-cellular lymphoma presenting with a high degree malignancy, there has been used a new aggressive chemotherapeutic protocol "Bu". It is more effective than the well known protocol CHOP. 83% patients achieved complete remission as well as long-term survival. We examined pathologic specimens from 43 patients with Stage T1-T3 lesions who were treated preoperatively with four cycles of doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide, followed by segmentectomy/mastectomy and axillary node dissection (the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project B-18 protocol). Ten patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) were treated with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). Eight of 10 patients achieved complete remission (CR), and among the 8 newly diagnosed cases, 7 achieved CR. Five of 8 CR cases remained in CR after 8 to 30 months. Except for hypotension and a large gastric ulcer resulting from hyperhistaminemia, the adverse effects of ATRA were generally mild.
