Age-at-death assessed with Lamendin's original and population-specific models in a modern Brazilian osteological collection.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the age at death is a common procedure in the fields of forensic human identification and anthropological/archaeological investigations. Root translucency and periodontosis are regressive parameters used to estimate the age of adults, more specifically in Lamendin's method - established in 1992 in a French population. This study aimed to test the applicability and validity of Lamendin's method in a Brazilian osteological collection. METHODS: The sample consisted of 74 single-rooted teeth obtained from 50 skeletal remains (mean age: 53.20 ± 16.17 years) from Southeast Br

[Long-term stability of periodontal root coverage procedures for gingival recession].

Gingival recession could result in root exposure, dental hypersensitivity and poor aesthetics. It has been demonstrated that varieties of root coverage procedures can significantly improve gingival recession in short-term (≤6 months), of which coronally advanced flap combined with connective tissue graft is the gold standard technique for treatment of gingival recession. It could obtain the optimally complete root coverage and maintain long-term stability (≥2 years). However, clinical knowledge about the long-term effectiveness of the other alternative graft materials remain very limited. Base

Risk factors for root resorption of second molars associated with impacted mandibular third molars.

External root resorption (ERR) affecting mandibular second molars (M2) may occur when the adjacent third molar (M3) is impacted in close proximity. This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the presence, severity, and location of ERR on M2 due to M3 using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and to identify associated factors. The angle between the axis of M2 and M3 was measured. ERR on M2 was classified as absent, slight, moderate, or severe. The location of contact between M3 and M2, the size of the dental follicle, and patient demographic characteristics were recorded. A total o

Initial arch wires for tooth alignment during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.

BACKGROUND: Initial arch wires are the first arch wires to be inserted into the fixed appliance at the beginning of orthodontic treatment and are used mainly for the alignment of teeth by correcting crowding and rotations. With a number of different types of orthodontic arch wires available for initial tooth alignment, it is important to understand which wire is most efficient, as well as which wires cause the least amount of root resorption and pain during the initial aligning stage of treatment. This is an update of the review 'Initial arch wires for alignment of crooked teeth with fixed orth

Aesthetic management of gingival recession by root biomodification with carbon dioxide laser and subepithelial connective tissue graft with lateral repositioned flap technique.

Localised gingival recessions continue to represent an important aesthetic condition requiring treatment in periodontics. Various techniques have been tried to treat exposed root surfaces to improve aesthetics with high percentage of success and minimal discomfort. Root biomodification is done to improve the predictability of these procedures. This clinical report describes periodontal plastic procedure involving subepithelial connective tissue graft with lateral repositioned flap technique and root biomodification with CO(2) laser for the management of gingival recession.

Orbital abscess during endodontic treatment: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Orbital infections may result in permanent morbidity because of the severity of infection. Furthermore, delayed diagnosis or treatment of orbital infections can lead to intracranial complications and even death. The majority of orbital infections develop from paranasal sinus infections, cutaneous infections, and periorbital trauma. Dacryocystitis and odontogenic infection are also accounted as potential etiologies but are scarcely reported in scientific literature. METHODS: The patient revealed a history of having endodontic treatment on left maxillary second molar performed 2 w

Occurrence of talon cusp on a geminated maxillary central incisor: a case report.

This article reports an uncommon case of talon cusp on a geminated permanent maxillary central incisor, including details of the clinical and radiographic findings and treatment. A 28-year-old woman presented at the university dental clinic, and intraoral examination revealed a maxillary central incisor of abnormal size with a prominent accessory cusp on the lingual aspect. The case was diagnosed as talon cusp on a geminated tooth. Early diagnosis of this anomaly is important since it may cause clinical problems such as esthetic concerns, caries and tooth crowding. In the present case, these a
