The relationship between discrimination, alcohol use severity, and PTSD symptoms among Latinx heavy drinkers.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination is linked to alcohol use severity among Latinx adults, who also show high prevalence rates of PTSD compared to non-Latinx adults. We know little about whether PTSD symptoms affects the relationship between discrimination and alcohol use severity. We hypothesized that the association between discrimination and alcohol use severity might differ by level of PTSD symptom severity. METHODS: This is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of data collected at baseline from a completed randomized clinical trial testing the relative efficacy of a culturally adapted motivatio

A randomized, controlled pilot study of positive affect treatment adapted for anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Novel treatments for adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) are sorely needed. Although psychological interventions have been developed for AN, none have been identified as superior to one another or nonspecific treatments. Common comorbidities (e.g., mood and anxiety disorders) are rarely targeted in AN treatments, possibly impairing long-term clinical improvement. AN is associated with reward processing dysfunctions paralleling those identified in affective disorders; however, few treatments directly target these processes. METHOD: We adapted Positive Affect Treatment, a neuroscience-

Validation of Cepstral Acoustic Analysis for Normal and Pathological Voice in the Japanese Language.

OBJECTIVES: Cepstral analysis does not require the detection of pitch within waveforms, which makes it suitable for acoustic evaluation of connected speech contexts and severely disordered voice. Although the utility of cepstral measurements, including cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and cepstral spectral index of dysphonia (CSID), has been reported for several languages, it has yet to be demonstrated in the Japanese language. The current study aimed to investigate the utility of cepstral acoustic analysis for the Japanese language as an indicator of dysphonia and the degree of dysphonia severi

An evaluation of Short-term Treatment Outcomes of Cricothyroid Visor Maneuver: A Proof-of-Concept Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is used as a clinical and diagnostic descriptive label for a diverse range of vocal fold behaviors caused by increased tension of the (para) laryngeal musculature. These increased tension can occur in the cricothyroid muscle and in the ''visor'' mechanism, contributing to voice problems. The main goal of this study is to determine whether a new method, the cricothyroid visor maneuver (CVM), is an effective method for improving quality and other aspects of the MTD patients' voices. METHOD(S): Eighty-eight adult female patients participated in this q

Emotion detection deficits and changes in personality traits linked to loss of white matter integrity in primary progressive aphasia.

Non-cognitive features including personality changes are increasingly recognized in the three PPA variants (semantic-svPPA, non fluent-nfvPPA, and logopenic-lvPPA). However, differences in emotion processing among the PPA variants and its association with white matter tracts are unknown. We compared emotion detection across the three PPA variants and healthy controls (HC), and related them to white matter tract integrity and cortical degeneration. Personality traits in the PPA group were also examined in relation to white matter tracts. Thirty-three patients with svPPA, nfvPPA, lvPPA, and 32 H

HPV knowledge, awareness, and vaccine beliefs among women attending gynecological care in Türkiye: implications for cervical cancer prevention.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of effective HPV vaccines, vaccination rates remain low in many countries, including Türkiye. Cervical cancer prevention continues to rely largely on opportunistic screening. Although HPV knowledge, awareness, and vaccine beliefs are recognized as important determinants of vaccination behavior, how these factors interact among women attending gynecological care has not been fully elucidated. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 300 women aged 18-49 years attending the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in the Marma

Change in Seasonal Beliefs Mediates the Durability Advantage of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Over Light Therapy for Winter Depression.

In treating an acute episode of winter depression, cognitive-behavioral therapy for seasonal affective disorder (CBT-SAD) and light therapy are comparably efficacious, with improvement in depression symptoms during CBT-SAD mediated by reduced seasonal beliefs (i.e., maladaptive thoughts about the seasons, light availability, and weather). Here, we tested whether the enduring benefit of CBT-SAD over light therapy following treatment is associated with offsetting seasonal beliefs during CBT-SAD. Currently depressed adults with Major Depression, Recurrent with Seasonal Pattern (N = 177) were rand

Integrated Care Intervention Supported by a Mobile Health Tool for Patients Using Noninvasive Ventilation at Home: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Home-based noninvasive ventilation has proven cost-effective. But, adherence to therapy still constitutes a common clinical problem. We hypothesized that a behavioral intervention supported by a mobile health (mHealth) app could enhance patient self-efficacy. It is widely accepted that mHealth-supported services can enhance productive interactions among the stakeholders involved in home-based respiratory therapies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to measure changes in self-efficacy in patients with chronic respiratory failure due to diverse etiologies during a 3-month follow-up period

Intellectual functioning in children with early shunted posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVES: Early intervention for cognitive impairments seen in children with hydrocephalus is key to successful developmental outcome. Thus, the examination of the cognitive and behavioral functioning of children with hydrocephalus is important, given increasing survival rates and the potential to implement successful cognitive interventions. The current literature suggests that intellectual impairment is common in hydrocephalus patients, yet the findings vary concerning the extent and specifics of the cognitive deficits seen in these children. To better understand the pattern of cognitive i

Pore-Scale and Molecular Insights into Surfactant and CO2 Huff-and-Puff for Enhanced Oil Recovery in Shale Reservoirs.

This study systematically investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) efficacy of surfactant and CO2 huff-and-puff processes across different pore sizes in shale reservoirs. By integrating nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the differential behaviors of these two EOR agents at the pore scale were elucidated. NMR T 2 spectroscopy reveals that CO2 huff-and-puff achieved superior cumulative recovery rates (37.30%) compared to surfactants (24.01%), primarily due to its miscibility with crude oil and efficient

Exploring sex, residence type, and psychosomatic factors in the association between insomnia symptoms and stress-related outcomes among university students in Ghana.

Insomnia has been associated with adverse stress-related outcomes among university students. However, evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa remains limited, and the factors underlying these associations are poorly understood. This study examined the associations between insomnia symptoms and stress-related outcomes among undergraduate students in Ghana and explored potential effect modification and mediating factors. We analyzed data from a cross-sectional survey of 1,047 students aged ≥ 18 years in Ghana. Insomnia symptoms were assessed using the Insomnia Severity Index, while perceived stress and
