The syndemic illness of HIV and trauma: implications for a trauma-informed model of care.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV infection are disproportionately burdened by trauma and the resultant negative health consequences, making the combination of HIV infection and trauma a syndemic illness. Despite the high co-occurrence and negative influence on health, trauma and posttraumatic sequelae in people living with HIV infection often go unrecognized and untreated because of the current gaps in medical training and lack of practice guidelines. OBJECTIVE: We set out to review the current literature on HIV infection and trauma and propose a trauma-informed model of care to target this

[Environmental exposure to silver and its health effects].

Silver (Ag) possesses a well-known antibacterial activity and has been used for medical treatment and cosmetics such as wound dressing and deodorant powders. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed that the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for both metallic and most soluble Ag compounds should be 0.01 mg/m3. Argyria and argyrosis are known to be caused by deposition of insoluble Ag in the dermis and cornea/conjunctiva. However, the metabolic behavior and biological roles of Ag have not been well characterized in mammals. Ag

How Does Gambling Correlate with Chronic Health Conditions?

This study investigates the relationship between gambling behaviors and health outcomes, focusing on chronic illnesses (hypertension, diabetes). Using data from the 2023 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), a mixed-mode survey with address-based sampling, we analyzed a large, diverse sample of California residents. We conducted logistic regression models that assessed the correlation between gambling and health outcomes, adjusting for gender and age. Our results indicate that individuals who gambled within the past year had significantly higher odds of reporting hypertension (OR=1.35) 95

Process evaluation of workplace health promotion in a sheltered workplace: a care ethics perspective.

Despite the potential health benefits of workplace health promotion for employees in sheltered workplaces, participation is often limited. The aim of this study was (i) to understand this limited participation, and (ii) to find opportunities for adapting workplace health promotion, such that it better meets the needs of the target population. A responsive process evaluation of an extensive multi-component workplace health promotion program targeting lifestyle behaviors, financial behaviors, literacy and citizenship, was performed in a large, sheltered workplace in the Netherlands (>3500 employ

Male caregivers of spouses with Alzheimer's disease: risk factors and health status.

Caregiving for persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been shown to pose a challenge to the health of the spousal caregiver. Because most of the caregiving literature focuses on the female caregiver, there is some question about the generalizability of such literature to the male caregiver. This report focuses on male caregivers of spouses with AD and represents a subsample from a larger descriptive study that examined the relationship between risk factors and the health status of spousal caregivers. Twenty-nine male caregivers affiliated with Alzheimer's organizations in Pennsylvania and O

A Novel Communication Value Task Demonstrates Evidence of Response Bias in Cases with Presbyacusis.

Decision-making about the expected value of an experience or behavior can explain hearing health behaviors in older adults with hearing loss. Forty-four middle-aged to older adults (68.45 ± 7.73 years) performed a task in which they were asked to decide whether information from a surgeon or an administrative assistant would be important to their health in hypothetical communication scenarios across visual signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Participants also could choose to view the briefly presented sentences multiple times. The number of these effortful attempts to read the stimuli served as a mea

Neutrophils under the microscope: neutrophil dynamics in infection, inflammation, and cancer revealed using intravital imaging.

Neutrophils rapidly respond to inflammation resulting from infection, injury, and cancer. Intravital microscopy (IVM) has significantly advanced our understanding of neutrophil behavior, enabling real-time visualization of their migration, interactions with pathogens, and coordination of immune responses. This review delves into the insights provided by IVM studies on neutrophil dynamics in various inflammatory contexts. We also examine the dual role of neutrophils in tumor microenvironments, where they can either facilitate or hinder cancer progression. Finally, we highlight how computational

[Diagnosis and treatment of hair pulling- and skin picking disorder].

Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) is characterized by recurrent pulling of hair from the scalp, eyebrows or other parts of the body. Skin picking disorder (SPD) is closely related to HPD and involves re-current picking of the skin. Even though both HPD and SPD are relatively common and potentially severe disorders, health professionals typically know little about them. In the present article, we describe the clinical characteristics of these problems and provide diagnostic guidelines. We also discuss main treatment approaches (drug treatments and behavior therapy) and review resear

Pathological gambling and suicidality: an analysis of severity and lethality.

Pathological gambling represents a major public health issue. Risk factors for suicide such as major depression, substance abuse, marital breakdown, unemployment, financial crises, and legal difficulties are commonly found in populations of pathological gamblers. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the nature of suicidal behavior among treatment-seeking pathological gamblers and its relationship to gambling characteristics and depression. Indices of suicidality were assessed in a sample of 85 treatment-seeking diagnosed pathological gamblers. High rates of suicidal id

Managing somatic preoccupation.

Somatically preoccupied patients are a heterogeneous group of persons who have no genuine physical disorder but manifest psychologic conflicts in a somatic fashion; who have a notable psychologic overlay that accompanies or complicates a genuine physical disorder; or who have psychophysiologic symptoms in which psychologic factors play a major role in physiologic symptoms. In the primary care setting, somatic preoccupation is far more prevalent among patients than are the psychiatric disorders collectively referred to as somatoform disorders (e.g., somatization disorder, hypochondriasis). Repeater F waves: a comparison of sensitivity with sensory antidromic wrist-to-palm latency and distal motor latency in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Thirty-five thousand six hundred supramaximal shocks were applied to 209 healthy and 147 entrapped median nerves (carpal tunnel syndrome--CTS) to characterize the backfiring behavior of the alpha motor neuron pool of abductor pollicis brevis in health and the modifying effect of a compressive neuropathy. A contraction of the normal subpopulation of active F-wave generators was found in CTS, while active neurons backfired at higher than normal frequencies (p less than 0.001). These modifications in spinal behavior are reflected in the % Repeater F-wave value, whose sensitivity in the detection

Promoting Hispanic Immigrant Health via Community Health Workers and Motivational Interviewing.

Hispanic immigrant health disparities are among the highest in the nation, especially related to obesity and access to health services. Healthy Fit (En Forma Saludable) is a health promotion program that leverages public health department infrastructure to address these disparities through the use of three key innovations explored in this article: community health workers (CHWs), motivational interviewing (MI), and vouchers for free preventative health services. CHWs trained in MI conduct a health screening and then distribute preventive service vouchers and health resources as needed based on

Cognitive function, self-management, and outcomes among liver transplant recipients: LivCog, a multicenter, prospective study.

Liver transplantation is a life-saving option for decompensated cirrhosis. Liver transplant recipients require advanced self-management skills, intact cognitive skills, and care partner support to improve long-term outcomes. Gaps remain in understanding post-liver transplant cognitive and health trajectories, and patient factors such as self-management skills, care partner support, and sleep. Our aims are to (1) assess pre-liver transplant to post-liver transplant cognitive trajectories and identify risk factors for persistent cognitive impairment; (2) evaluate associations between cognitive f

Bridging the awareness-action gap in pelvic floor prehabilitation: cognitive barriers and facilitators for asymptomatic populations-a perspective.

Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), including urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, represent a widespread public health concern with substantial implications for functional status and quality of life. Evidence supports the efficacy of prehabilitation-a proactive strategy focused on preventing dysfunction before clinical onset-through screening and early intervention. However, its implementation in asymptomatic populations remains limited, largely due to a pervasive "awareness-action gap" wherein knowledge fails to translate into behavioral engagement. This perspective article systematica
