Critical flicker frequency (CFF) of 40 men, 20 mentally retarded whose mean age was 22.0 yr. and 20 normal whose mean age was 21.5 yr., was measured under binocular viewing using the Lafayette Visual Perception Control with a display unit. Subjects had been previously tested for visual acuity and color blindness. Analysis showed a significant difference in CFF between mentally retarded persons and normal individuals, the former having lower CFF than the latter. This finding suggests lower perceptual sensitivity of the mentally retarded persons. Further research with provision for EEG recording

Four patients with HIV infection and severe immunodeficiency are described who developed atypical varicella zoster lesions. Three of the patients presented with chronic varicella zoster lesions. In two of them such lesions were hyperkeratotic. All three patients had been treated initially with subtherapeutic doses of acyclovir. In one of the patients the lesions were clinically resistant to high dose acyclovir treatment and disappeared only when renal insufficiency developed during foscarnet-famcyclovir treatment. One patient developed a disseminated varicella zoster infection.

The diagnosis of holoprosencephaly usually implies a poor prognosis and is often regarded as a contraindication for surgical correction of associated clefts of the lip or palate. The source of blood loss remains undetermined in 5% of patients with chronic gastrointestinal bleeding. Small bowel enteroscopy using a prototype of a sonde-type enteroscope was performed in 27 patients with chronic or subacute gastrointestinal bleeding of obscure origin. The procedure time ranged between 1.5 and 6.5 hours (mean = 4 hours 15 minutes). Sonde-type enteroscopy showed vascular malformation as possible source of bleeding in 22% of our patients. Shigella antigens can be detected in the excreta of convalescents after dysentery for a long time. Most frequently these antigens occur in feces, less frequently in urine and rarely in saliva. According to indirect data, S. flexneri 1-6 antigens can be detected in excreta for a longer period after convalescence than S. sonnei antigens. When antigen indication is used for the diagnosis of dysentery and epidemiological analysis is carried out, one should bear in mind the length of the agent persistence in the body, related to Shigella type.
