A New Intraocular Lens Power Formula Integrating an Artificial Intelligence-Powered Estimation for Effective Lens Position Based on Chinese Eyes.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a new intraocular lens (IOL) formula based on Chinese eyes. METHODS: A training dataset of 709 eyes undergoing uneventful cataract surgery was used to train the algorithm for effective lens position estimation. The algorithm was then integrated with Gaussian optics to develop the new IOL formula (Jin-AI). From the same center, 177 eyes served as an internal test dataset. An independent dataset of 557 eyes served as an external test dataset. The standard deviation (SD) of prediction errors was compared among the Jin-AI formula, traditional third-generation form

Computer tomography-based radiomics combined with machine learning for predicting the time since onset of epidural hematoma.

Estimation of the age of epidural hematoma (EDH) is a challenge in clinical forensic medicine, and this issue has yet to be conclusively resolved. The advantages of objectivity and non-invasiveness make computing tomography (CT) imaging an potential diagnostic method for EDH in living individuals. Recently, radiomics, the extraction hidden information from medical images, has emerged as a promising method for constructing predictive models. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and applicability of CT-based radiomics in predicting the timing of EDH injuries in surviving victims.

Radiofrequency ablation of lung metastases of colorectal cancer: could early radiomics analysis of the ablation zone help detect local tumor progression?

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether radiomics data can predict local tumor progression (LTP) following radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of colorectal cancer (CRC) lung metastases on the first revaluation chest CT. METHODS: This case-control single-center retrospective study included 95 distinct lung metastases treated by RFA (in 39 patients, median age: 63.1 years) with a contrast-enhanced CT-scan performed 3 months after RFA. Forty-eight radiomics features (RFs) were extracted from the 3D-segmentation of the ablation zone. Several supervised machine-learning algorithms were trained in 10-fold cros

Accuracy of the electronic health record's problem list in describing multimorbidity in patients with heart failure in the emergency department.

Patients with heart failure (HF) often suffer from multimorbidity. Rapid assessment of multimorbidity is important for minimizing the risk of harmful drug-disease and drug-drug interactions. We assessed the accuracy of using the electronic health record (EHR) problem list to identify comorbid conditions among patients with chronic HF in the emergency department (ED). A retrospective chart review study was performed on a random sample of 200 patients age ≥65 years with a diagnosis of HF presenting to an academic ED in 2019. We assessed participant chronic conditions using: (1) structured chart

Functionally validated SCN5A variants allow interpretation of pathogenicity and prediction of lethal events in Brugada syndrome.

AIMS: The prognostic value of genetic variants for predicting lethal arrhythmic events (LAEs) in Brugada syndrome (BrS) remains controversial. We investigated whether the functional curation of SCN5A variations improves prognostic predictability. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using a heterologous expression system and whole-cell patch clamping, we functionally characterized 22 variants of unknown significance (VUSs) among 55 SCN5A mutations previously curated using in silico prediction algorithms in the Japanese BrS registry (n = 415). According to the loss-of-function (LOF) properties, SCN5A mutation

A novel surgical predictive model for Chinese Crohn's disease patients.

Due to the complexity of Crohn's disease (CD), it is difficult to predict disease course with a single stratification factor or biomarker. A logistic regression (LR) model has been proposed by Guizzetti et al to stratify patients with CD-related surgical risk, which could help decision-making on disease treatment. However, there are no reports on relevant studies on Chinese population. The aim of the study is to present and validate a novel surgical predictive model to facilitate therapeutic decision-making for Chinese CD patients. Data was extracted from retrospective full-mode electronic med

Multimodal deep learning enhances genomic risk prediction for cardiometabolic diseases.

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) are multifactorial disorders influenced by numerous genetic variants and their complex interactions. Although recent studies have advanced the understanding of genetic risk prediction, current approaches predominantly rely on linear models that may not fully capture the complex, nonlinear relationships between genetic factors. Here, we present DeepGP (Deep learning-based Genome-wide Predictor), a novel multimodal deep learning framework that incorporates bidirectional state space models to predict CMD risk using genome-wide variants and demographic data. We cond

Development of a predictive model for postoperative body mass index and diabetes outcomes after metabolic bariatric surgery: retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Predicting postoperative body mass index (BMI) trajectories and long-term type 2 diabetes (T2D) remission after bariatric surgery remains challenging. Existing models often rely on baseline variables only and fail to incorporate dynamic postoperative changes. This study aimed to develop and validate a multicentre machine-learning framework that predicts individualized BMI trajectories and T2D remission using routinely available preoperative data and time-dependent weight evolution. METHODS: This multicentre retrospective cohort study included adult patients who underwent Roux-en-Y

Personalized prediction of initial valproic acid dose in children with epilepsy using machine learning techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Valproic acid (VPA) is widely prescribed antiepileptic drug in children because of its broad-spectrum efficacy. However, marked inter-individual variability in pharmacokinetics makes dose optimization challenging. Inappropriate initial dosing can lead to subtherapeutic exposure or toxicity, including hepatotoxicity, encephalopathy, and hematological adverse effects. Despite the importance of early dose selection, reliable methods for predicting individualized initial daily doses of VPA in pediatric epilepsy are lacking. AIM: This study aimed to develop and internally validate a

Machine learning prediction of complications after surgery in cirrhotic patients: Integrating nutritional risk with liver function.

Liver disease is among the most common medical conditions in the world, leading to high rates of morbidity and death. Early identification of liver diseases enables prompt care, which may prevent many conditions from progressing to more serious stages, like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Traditionally, models often overlook the predictive importance of nutritional status and focus primarily on liver-specific measures. This research aims to propose a machine learning (ML) approach to predict surgical complications in patients with liver cirrhosis by integrating existing liver function metrics with

Machine-learning-based cardiovascular mortality prediction using a cumulative PM2.5 exposure metric in high risk groups: a retrospective cohort study.

Classical risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) are well established. Although the association between air pollution (AP) and CVD is also well recognized, its integration into cardiovascular mortality risk prediction models remains limited, particularly in the context of machine learning approaches. We conducted a study within the prospective EP-PARTICLES cohort to quantify the improvement in CVD mortality risk prediction achieved by integrating environmental factors into prediction models using the 'ePM-years Index' which reflects the proportion of cumulative long-term PM2.5 exposure
