Cold-weather military operations can quickly undermine warfighter readiness and performance. Specifically, accidental cold-water immersion (CWI) contributes to rapid body heat loss and impaired motor function. This study evaluated the prevalence of hypothermia and critical hand temperatures during CWI. One-hundred seventeen (N = 117) military personnel (mean ± SD age: 27 ± 6 yr, height: 176 ± 8 cm, weight: 81.5 ± 11.6 kg) completed CWI and rewarming during cold-weather training, which included a 10-min outdoor CWI (1.3 ± 1.4°C) combined with cold air (-4.2 ± 8.5°C) exposure. Following CWI, stu

Since almost a hundred years, psychologists have investigated the link between hand preference and dyslexia. We present a meta-analysis to determine whether there is indeed an increase in atypical hand preference in dyslexia. We included studies used in two previous meta-analyses (Bishop, 1990; Eglinton & Annett, 1994) as well as studies identified through PubMed MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Google Scholar, and Web of Science up to August 2022. K = 68 studies (n = 4660 individuals with dyslexia; n = 40845 controls) were entered into three random effects meta-analyses using the odds ratio as the effect s

EF-hand proteins, which contain a Ca2+-binding EF-hand motif, are involved in regulating diverse cellular functions. Ca2+ binding induces conformational changes that modulate the activities of EF-hand proteins. Moreover, these proteins occasionally modify their activities by coordinating metals other than Ca2+, including Mg2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+, within their EF-hands. EFhd1 and EFhd2 are homologous EF-hand proteins with similar structures. Although separately localized within cells, both are actin-binding proteins that modulate F-actin rearrangement through Ca2+-independent actin-binding and Ca2+-

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a congenital limb defect most typically presenting with median clefts in hands and/or feet, that can occur in a syndromic context as well as in isolated form. SHFM is caused by failure to maintain normal apical ectodermal ridge function during limb development. Although several genes and contiguous gene syndromes are implicated in the monogenic etiology of isolated SHFM, the disorder remains genetically unexplained for many families and associated genetic loci. We describe a family with isolated X-linked SHFM, for which the causative variant could be dete

This study evaluates the long-term donor site outcomes after second toe transfers for congenital hand differences performed during childhood. In total, 25 toe transfers in 18 patients were followed up for a mean period of 17.4 years. We examined the patients clinically, radiologically and with a gait analysis system. Patient-reported outcome measures were collected. The patients were asymptomatic and there were no problematic clinical or radiological findings. Patients expressed high levels of satisfaction. The results were consistent, regardless of the resection level in the toe transfer or w

BACKGROUND: A variety of surgical techniques had been developed over the past few decades for treating thumb carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) osteoarthritis (OA). However, there are currently no accepted consensus on the ideal treatment for thumb CMCJ OA. Arthrodesis was one of the widely popular treatment methods; however, studies have showed that non-union rates were as high as 50%, with higher complications such as osteoarthritis of neighbouring joints and higher revision surgeries required as compared to other surgical methods. Patients with arthrodesis were also reported to have decreased thu

Lateral epicondylitis, de Quervain tenosynovitis, and trigger finger are among the most common tendinopathies of the upper extremity. Lateral epicondylitis is a common condition with a prolonged course that can be frustrating for patients. Nonetheless, most patients improve with a simple wait-and-see approach. Therapy has been shown to be helpful and surgical management is usually successful in recalcitrant cases. Cortisone, although commonly used in the past, has been shown to have worse results than placebo in the medium and long term. de Quervain tenosynovitis responds well to nonsurgical m

Dupuytren's disease is a fibroproliferative disease that affects the palmar hand, causing progressive, permanent, and symptomatic flexion contracture of the digits. It is a disorder of polygenetic and multifactorial origin, usually affecting middle-aged males. Dupuytren's disease developing as a result of hand trauma in younger ages is rarely reported. In this case, we present a 14-year-old male patient with Dupuytren's disease following acute traumatic injury. We performed the fasciectomy and Z-plasty with full thickness skin graft. He recovered completely additional injection of triamcinolon

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of stroke or cerebrovascular accidents ranks first in China. More than 85% of stroke patients have residual upper limb motor dysfunction, especially hand dysfunction. Normalizing the rehabilitation evaluation process and standard quantitative evaluation method is a complex and key point in rehabilitation therapy. The study aimed to establish a function model based on the Bayes discriminant by measuring the thenar stiffness with shear wave elastography (SWE) to quantitatively evaluate the hand motor function of hemiplegic patients after stroke.
METHODS: This stud

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema (HE) is a highly prevalent, recurrent, and multifactorial disease. It encompasses a group of eczematous diseases that affect the hands, etiologically classified into irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and atopic dermatitis (AD). Few epidemiological studies in Latin America have investigated the characteristics of patients with this condition and the origin of the disease.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the profile of patients diagnosed with HE submitted to patch tests aiming to determine its etiology.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive stud

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota, subphylum Mucormycotina. In developed countries, it affects patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy and those who have received allogenic stem cell transplants, while in developing countries it is seen in those with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a 67yo Chinese gentleman with background of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) on chemotherapy. We also share the clinicopathological findings of this and correlate these

Bimanual movements that require coordinated actions of the two hands may be coordinated by synchronous bilateral activation of somatosensory and motor cortical areas in both hemispheres, by enhanced activation of individual neurons specialized for bimanual actions, or by both mechanisms. To investigate cortical neural mechanisms that mediate unimanual and bimanual prehension, we compared actions of the left and right hands in a reach to grasp-and-pull instructed-delay task. Spike trains were recorded with multiple electrode arrays placed in the hand area of primary motor (M1) and somatosensory

INTRODUCTION: Although stapled anastomoses have been widely evaluated in the context of the elective surgery, few reports compared manual with stapled anastomoses in patients undergoing emergency surgery. The aim of this study is to compare the outcome of hand-sewn end-to-end anastomoses with stapled side-to-side and stapled end-to-side anastomoses in patients undergoing small bowel resection for acute mesenteric ischemia secondary to intestinal obstruction.
METHODS: From January 2015 to June 2021 all the hemodynamically stable patients undergoing emergency surgery with small bowel resection

Robotic prostheses controlled by myoelectric signals can restore limited but important hand function in individuals with upper limb amputation. The lack of individual finger control highlights the yet insurmountable gap to fully replacing a biological hand. Implanted electrodes around severed nerves have been used to elicit sensations perceived as arising from the missing limb, but using such extra-neural electrodes to record motor signals that allow for the decoding of phantom movements has remained elusive. Here, we showed the feasibility of using signals from non-penetrating neural electrod

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy drugs can be responsible of several side effects such as hand-foot syndrome (HFS). This syndrome is also called "palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia" and "acral erythema." Without proper management, it can deteriorate the quality of life of a patient, leading to temporary or definitive stop of chemotherapy.
AIM OF THIS STUDY: To identify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients, the risk factors for occurrence and worsening of this syndrome, and the drugs most likely to be responsible of HFS.
METHODS: Our study was retrospective, including 42 pati

PURPOSE: Inappropriately reported or conducted studies may decrease the quality of care due to under- or overestimation of the benefits or harms of interventions. Our aim was to evaluate how often hand surgical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) use and report adequate methods to ensure internal validity, and whether inadequate reporting or methods are associated with the magnitude of treatment effect estimates.
METHODS: Data Sources were the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, and Embase databases until November 2020. We included published RCTs investigating the effects

The Riche-Cannieu anastomosis is a neural connection between the deep branch of the ulnar nerve and the recurrent motor branch of the median nerve to the thenar. Rarely, it provides complete or nearly complete ulnar innervation of the thenar muscles (all-ulnar hand). This may lead to confusing clinical and electrodiagnostic findings in patients with median or ulnar nerve pathology, or during workup for suspected nerve lesions. Two patients referred for electrodiagnostic assessment of carpal tunnel syndrome and one patient with suspected peripheral neuropathy presented with absent or very low c
