BACKGROUND: Prognostic models that identify individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) at greatest risk of developing kidney failure help clinicians to make decisions and deliver precision medicine. It is recognised that people with CKD usually have multiple long-term health conditions (multimorbidity) and often experience frailty. We undertook a systematic review to evaluate the representation and consideration of multimorbidity and frailty within CKD cohorts used to develop and/or validate prognostic models assessing the risk of kidney failure.
METHODS: We identified studies that describ

Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of the central nervous system. Brain injury and neurodegenerative disease often lead to oligodendrocyte death and subsequent demyelination-related pathological changes, resulting in neurological defects and cognitive impairment (Spaas et al., 2021; Zhang J et al., 2022). Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a major demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. The pathology of MS is characterized by the loss of myelin, oligodendrocytes, and axons in the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord, as well as by white matter lesions (Lassmann et al., 2007). Unfort

OBJECTIVE: To describe differences in clinical and demographic characteristics between patients with episodic migraine (EM) or chronic migraine (CM) and determine the effect of migraine subtype on patient-reported outcome measures (PROM).
BACKGROUND: Prior studies have characterized migraine in the general population. While this provides a basis for our understanding of migraine, we have less insight into the characteristics, comorbidities, and outcomes of migraine patients who present to subspecialty headache clinics. These patients represent a subset of the population that bears the greates

INTRODUCTION: The misuse of Pregabalin has been the subject of growing concern for several years. The effects sought are multiple and it is rarely taken as a single drug. It is most frequently used together with opioids, which may increase the risk of fatal overdose. In response to this emerging phenomenon, we seek to better understand the situation of misuse in Belgium and identify the people involved in it.
METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 20 participants who misuse Pregabalin was conducted throughout the French-speaking region of Belgium between August

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections are a matter of concern in small animal veterinary practice. Few reports are avaiable, especially regarding the role of opportunistic bacteria in becoming infectious. This report aims to add to the current veterinary literature on two opportunistic bacterial species (Enterococcus hirae and Enterobacter xiangfangensis) associated with bloodstream infections in small animals admitted to the Bologna University Veterinary Hospital.
CASE PRESENTATION: In the first case, a 15-year-old, immunocompromised, cardiopathic dog was admitted to the hospital for anorexia a

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) can have adverse effects on health outcomes throughout the life course. Adults with FAS have an increased risk of chronic and infectious diseases. Although these conditions can affect reproductive health, few have described perinatal outcomes among individuals with an FAS diagnosis.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Study of Mothers and Infants, an administrative birth cohort derived from California birth certificates linked with a hospital discharge database. The cohort consisted of 7.3 million singleton, live births between 2005 and 2021. FAS was id

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin condition causing lesions in which high levels of interleukin (IL)-23 and T-helper 17 cells are found. Adalimumab remains the only approved treatment. Guselkumab, an antibody targeting the p19 protein subunit of extracellular IL-23, is approved for the treatment of moderate-severe psoriasis, but evidence on its efficacy in treating HS is limited.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of guselkumab in treating moderate-severe HS under clinical practice conditions.
METHODS: A multicentre retrospective observational study

Cyclosporine is a potent immunosuppressive agent used in veterinary medicine to treat a variety of inflammatory or immune mediated conditions. Many adverse effects are associated with this medication, however most of them rarely occur. A 5-year-old, female intact French bulldog was presented with multiple, multifocally distributed, severe hyperkeratotic and papillomatous/verrucous plaques. The dog was on long-term immunosuppressive treatment with cyclosporine for meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO). It had an history of atopic dermatitis and calcinosis cutis. MECP2 and its product methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) are associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), which are inflammatory, autoimmune, and demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). However, the mechanisms and pathways regulated by MeCP2 in immune activation in favor of MS and NMOSD are not fully understood. We summarize findings that use the binding properties of MeCP2 to identify its targets, particularly the genes recognized by MeCP2 and associated with several neurological disorders. MeCP2 regulates gene expression

BACKGROUND: HBV pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) is a circulating biomarker for covalently closed circular DNA activity in HBV-infected individuals and has been studied for treatment efficacy, disease staging, and off-therapy outcomes; however, data on the stability are scarce. Increasing HBV pgRNA assay sensitivity may improve its predictive value and provide additional insights at low viral levels.
METHODS: Modifications to a fully automated first (v1) generation HBV pgRNA assay improved sensitivity up to 15-fold over the previous assay. Flexible sample input volumes yielded lower limits of quantitat

RATIONALE: In our search on PubMed, we found that reports of co-infections involving Aspergillus fumigatus and Nocardia cyriacigeorgica in the literature are notably scarce. Most cases have been documented in patients with compromised immune systems or underlying pulmonary conditions. In contrast, our patient did not present with any of these risk factors. Furthermore, there have been no recent incidents such as near-drowning or other accidents in the patient history. To the best of our knowledge, this case represents a hitherto unreported clinical scenario. To enhance comprehension, we conduc

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. The advanced stage of NAFLD, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), has been recognized as a leading cause of end-stage liver injury for which there are no FDA-approved therapeutic options. Glutathione S-transferase Mu 2 (GSTM2) is a phase II detoxification enzyme. However, the roles of GSTM2 in NASH have not been elucidated.
METHODS: Multiple RNA-seq analyses were used to identify hepatic GSTM2 expression in NASH. In vitro and in vivo gain- or loss-of-function approaches we

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can lead to chronic liver diseases associated with mitochondrial damages. However, the exact mechanisms involved in the etiology of the disease are not clear.
METHODS: To gain new insights, the changes affecting sirtuin 1 (SIRT-1) during liver fat accumulation was investigated in a NAFLD mouse model. In addition, the in vitro research investigated the regulation operated by SIRT-1 on mitochondrial structures, biogenesis, functions, and autophagy.
RESULTS: In mice NAFLD, high-fat-diet (HFD) increased body weight gain, upregulated serum tota

BACKGROUND: Stigma, both enacted and internalized, is part of the illness experience of many chronic conditions / diseases and has been found to increase psychological distress, lower self-esteem, and impact social engagement lowering quality of life (QOL). Stigma among pediatric patients is of particular concern due to its potential impact on identity formation. Using patient data from the online FD/MAS Alliance Patient Registry (FDMASAPR), this study seeks to 1) determine levels of enacted and self-stigma in a pediatric population of fibrous dysplasia (FD) / McCune Albright syndrome (MAS) pa

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity strongly predicts adolescent multiple health risk behaviours (MRBs) such as alcohol/tobacco use, self-harm and physical inactivity, and both adversities and MRBs are associated with premature mortality and several chronic health conditions that are among the leading causes of death in adults. It is therefore important to understand the relationship between adversities and MRBs and what could mediate any association. The aim of this study was to explore whether childhood psychopathology mediates associations between adversities and MRBs.
METHODS: Participants we
